@@yosae The battery is easier than you think. No need to take the airbox out. Just loosen the battery box walls and you should have enough clearance to slide the battery out at an angle. I managed to do it.
I did 3 changes so far and that plastic doesn't need to be taken off (I never did). You just unclip the filler cap, use a special 27mm wrench (google it and you will see the strange U shape) or make one by bending/cut+weld to be able to untighten the oil filter cap then you have enough space to take it out without removing the cover. Takes 10 minutes tops. Also to facilitate access underneath I made a hole in the shield where the drain screw is and no elevation is required for oil change. Did it all in under 30 minutes after that including air filters.
Yeeeeeaaaaah you don’t need to rip all that crap off just so you’re aware brother 👍🏼 no special special tools required either. A 27mm spanner cut in half and just the ring end is legit all you need and you can get the filter out without undoing anything else
Thank you. I think I have to do this now that I've jammed a non-reversible ratchet with socket in there. Life i s a pain sometimes. Update: succes!😊 I only dropped one nut , which my helpful neighbour found. I removed the two under-engine covers to retrieve it, revealing an 8 mm spanner probably lost by the Ford garage. Feels good man.
I found a u shape modified ring spanner on eBay purpose built for removing filter housing . Cost about 15 pounds from uk. Arrives in a few weeks and I hope it works as removing all those parts to get at the cap would drive me nuts. A credit to your patients man. Great demo but no thanks.
Yes you can buy the tool. I just think it's stupid you need a special tool in the first place since Ford literally didn't have this plastic piece on this engine in the Mondeo, why put it in the Focus?
All you need is 5-10mins and a stubby 27mm socket and short rachet. it's a bit of a squeeze but can be done with the right tools (thanks to Amazon). All the suggested mods are unnecessary.
That may be true but at least this way I'm less likely to make a mess getting the used oil filter out with the extra clearance. There was lots of oil stains from the service department from when the previous owner took it there. Obviously it's not that easy even for them.
I made my own key from a socket 27mm, divided into 2, and welded to an old and short wrench..From 1st side socket 27mm downwards and from 2nd side 1/2 inch square connector upwards...if necessary I can add a long 1/2 inch extention and a ratchet, if its stuck..
Here’s how I bodged this to not have take half the engine apart: unplug harness and move filler tube out of the way, take a 27mm socket and the 1/2 inch bar out of a push through style torque wrench, push the bar into the socket and put the socket onto the filter. Use a 1/2 inch wrench on the protruding bar to slowly loosen the filter and voila. Useful if you can’t be bothered to wait for a tool and ur a bodger :)

True, but I only had to do it once and it made every oil change after that much easier and quicker. Personal preference and just showing what can be done if you want.
Hi, thank you for a very informative video. Can you tell us which oil you use, Ford tells me this engine doesn't need a special diesel oil. Your standard petrol oil is good enough, is that true?
I use Penrite C4, meets Ford spec and suitable for DPF. At the very least you should use a diesel oil, if you want to extend the life of your DPF and not cause damage, then a DPF suitable oil too. Oil doesn't cost much in comparison to damaging your engine, but that's up to you.
Yes, but I still wonder even if you unscrew the filter it's still going to be a bit tricky taking it out. At least you keep the stock look that way but given that the dealer got oil on my coolant pipes when they did the change for the previous owner it's still messy.
Too bad you can't walk in to any auto parts store and buy the tool. Any design that requires a special tool for changing the oil filter should be discouraged.
+rothdareal This only has to be done once, after that it's easy every time. Bizarre design decision. You can but the U shaped tool but you shouldn't need special tools to change something as basic as an oil filter. And I only found a company overseas selling the tool as well.
just buy the tool on eBay it's 21 quid , search tdci oil filter remover , there is one wire in the way just to the left and has a black rubber bung on it , just "make sure first" to disconnect the negative on the battery as it will short if it touches metal ! easy 21 quid and one bolt holding on a wire
It’s about AUD$50 and I have to import it from the UK. It’s not sold here locally. I decided to do this mod instead to show what’s possible if you don’t have access to the tool.
stefcio007 It really is a stupid place to put it and especially as I had a mk4 Mondeo with the Euro IV version of the DW10 and that had the housing at the top of the engine where it should be, I wonder what the reasoning was for moving it to this position . My Focus Ecoboost I have now also has it in a stupid position (metal spin on type) with tight access from beneath but still doesn't need dismantling...
