I would say Ford based in cockermouth UK would have done all work on-site. Skilled fabricators involved with m-sport, no doubt.

5alv isnt that expensive. compared to the cost of the car its a no brainer. though aluminium would have been fine just less impact resistant.

That Focus from 03 was an absolute rocket. If it didn't have such terrible reliability Markko Martin would have had a real shot at the title it was so fast and thier engine was superb that year. I heard about this system but didn't know how it worked thank you for the explanation!

it was a loophole after this the fia made a rule that the total capacity of the charge system is 20 litres from restrictor to throttle body

Fun fact, the bumpers were made bigger originally to allow a bigger spoiler so it wouldn't stick out further than the bumper thus passing fia regs. Also fun fact is i have piston number 1 out of the 2002 McRae Acropolis winning car engraved by M-sport 😁

The terminology hidden implies cheating, it wasn't hidden the FIA new it was there. You don't just make a titanium tank and stick it on the roof. They had the room, they put it there. Do you want arrows and titanium air tank inside written on the bumper?

Titanium is not as expensive as it sounds. Titanium pipes prices start from about 20€/kg. It's more difficult to work with, that often makes the end product more expensive than some basic ss materials..

Yeah but if the tank were to rupture at like 1.5 bar, it would kill people, not just spray a little air out. 1 bar doesn’t seem like a lot but when you have a pressure vessel with a very large surface area (especially when it’s not a very strong shape), it can be incredibly dangerous

People talk a lot of smack about Ford, but look at the level of effort they put into motorsports. Look at the vehicles they made for Block and Gittin, nothing else like them on the planet. You can even order a brand new fully built turn key road course or drag car out of their catalog. Truly a unique company.

The 02 focus was used in the first few rallies of 2003 in a white RS livery before the 03 was ready. The 03 also ran with the same one until they switched to the bp-castrol ones

That sounds like a good Street mod. Add a compressor to keep the air full at Max pressure. It shouldn't be legal for turbo cars. Probably safer than heel-towing.

Bit like the water cooled brake fluid in F1 a few years back. Brake fluid was passed through an open topped water cooled heat exchanger, as the fluid built up heat the 5ltrs of water boiled off loosing some of the weight of the car. At race end, FIA allow fluid levels to be 'topped up' so 5 ltrs of water replaced in the now empty tank, car back to compliant weight... Only lasted 1 season - FIA banned it.

Robbie Gordon did something similar using the spare tyres as the air storage on his Dakar racer one year. It was banned pretty quickly too.

Subaru did this with the s12 but in a more eloquent way storing pressure to spool the turbo up to full performance levels even at a standstill start.

Probably due to this system. In theory it would create a air spike at high rpm, were a lot of fuel will be. Maybe leaning it out at top end. This is my theory, what parts failed?

@@Jessica-uf4fq if it only turns on at high rpm like it's said in the video, then the boost pressure would already be high from the turbo, wouldn't it? This would add some pressure, but judging by the performance gain of 5%, it might not be a lot. Not an expert by any means, just thinking about it

Possibly it's more than 5%.. this is the only information i managed to find about the improvement in power.. but i believe that it was more.. at least 10%

Great post! Subaru made a better system than Ford. They have a boost pack the size of a tennis ball cannister and it is located inside the engine bay. The Ford system is a bit complicated and it is prone to damage during a rear end collision.

Not exactly.. the rocket antilag was spinning the turbo continously while the air tank was returning the air back to the engine when the driver was pressing the throttle. I hope i helped you

Actually the restrictor was on the intake side of the system (pre-turbo) not on the turbo side. Legally the stored boost was from compressed air that had already passed through the restrictor (on the intake side) and as said in the video was boost made that would normally be wasted (through a blow-off valve, not waste-gate) otherwise. The FIA must have come up with another rule that was infringed to ban it. It was not cheating because there was clearly no rule against it initially.

It's an interesting point. The air had gone through the restrictor, it was just done at a times they didn't need the air for the engine and was then stored for later use. So for short bursts they could get higher performance due to extra boost from the stored post restrictor air. I imagine if the air had been taken before the restrictor and returned there, it would have simply been deemed a fairly ingenious anti-lag device and wouldn't have been banned, as the restrictor was still able to limit peak air-flow.

Maybe in electric cars, this feature could be used to store fresh air to keep the battery in adequate temperature, when the battery or the weather are warm, or even hot, so that a fast charge could still be possible.

the only reason this existed was to have more air than the restrictor plate allowed, it wouldnt make any sense to have this technology on a car without a restrictor so of course it was banned.

Because of a gentleman agreement. The FIA was worried this system will be copied by other teams and costs would skyroket. It was legal. But for the sake pf the sport M-sport gave up on it. At least afaik

What about a rule, that a race car must be in the same specs as sold to customers and must be sold in at least 10.000 units per year. Then we can see real quality of each model - i20, Fiesta, Fabia, Yaris,... and not the 'artificial' WRC specs. Because they spend millions to build a race car, they sell rubbish cars and they claim to customers it's the same model as seen in rally last week. Compare cars like i20 and Impreza/Evo.
