Ford Fusion 2014 select shift and sports mode how to

How to use your 2014 Ford Fusion sportsmode and select shift. You generally want to upshift ~500-800 rpm 1st-2nd gear. 100-1500 rpm second to third. Then from there on our shift up at like 2500-2800 rpm. Down shift like 800 rpm . You’ll get used to it and it’s way better than letting the onboard pc shift for you as the onboard pc shifts based off what it thinks you’ll do where as you know if you’re trying to speed up or slow down.

Starting in second gear is great for winter driving on slippery roads. I was always taught to do that if the car was capable. I could do it in every Ford I've owned since the 1970s. I regularly use that method with my 2016 Fusion, as well. Much less chance of spinning the wheels and getting stuck when pulling away at an intersection. Once it gets rolling I take it out of sport mode and let it continue to shift on it's own.

@scottperaza9333
@scottperaza9333 4 года назад
@@riveralley not only that, The gears are arranged from largest to smallest (think bicycle) remember being in 1st ear on a 27 speed bike? on flat land, you pedal insanely fast and hard but get next to nowhere? thats because the bike is using mechanical advantage of a larger cog which allows less force to move a heavy object. So on flat land it sucked, but going uphill on 1st gear on a bike was helpful. Also remember putting it on the highest gear and trying to get up from a start/ you have to stand up and really push on the pedals. Need a lot of power and strain to get going. But it was good once you caught up to a certain speed and wanted to go faster. same logic applies to cars. 2nd and third gear arent meant to have the same strain placed on them as first gear is. Moving a 2 ton vehicle from complete stop to start on flat land, let alone if youre parked facing uphill, is quite the task. So you always want to start off in first gear, never skip it. Otherwise the transmissions gears can wear out, or entire teeth from the cog can break off under the pressure. Then youre really fucked

Thanks for all the info. I just barely got my license and me and the wifey choose this car for me to learn to drive. I'm fairly excited to start using the sports mode to get some practice before I drive a manual. I'm not sure my engine has the option to shift for me because I almost stalled her the first time I put it in sport mode. It started on 2nd gear which I thought was strange considering I was parked. I tried putting her in first and she started to chug. I named her Gogeta (she's a Fusion, duh). Any way Gogeta was shaking as if she was about to stalk before I quickly put her back in drive mode. I'm going to experiment more today and share the results. Gogeta's a 2014 fusion se 1.5l ecoboost... So far I think she mechanically good. Not great at anything in particular but better than average at everything that includes her performance. Good acceleration, good braking, good gear shifting, good turning and I've kept traction control on 90% of the time. As far as convenience she's excellent... I mean all of the practical comforts and feel to her driver. Her seats and interior design, the my ford touch, the accessibility to entertainment, navigation, climate and Bluetooth are excellent. All of the awesome options, settings and information on the dash are excellent as well just too many to list lol... I love her as my first vehicle. I don't feel intimidating with too much power or invisible with too little power on the road. Excellently balanced. This video really inspired me to try and unlock some more potential of myself and Gogeta. Let's see if I can best this computer shifter and get her shifting smoother to prolong her transmission and ready myself for a manual car.

@scottperaza9333
@scottperaza9333 4 года назад
what you want to do in terms of turning and shifting is slow down earlier so youre already in 2 or 3rd gear a while before the turn. Since youre newer at it, it will help you out a lot. Might piss some people off behind you but its better driving habit anyway. Also when downshifting (hardest part), make sure that when you down shift the gear that the RPMS dont rise. as in, when coming up to a stop light, a lot of people slow down, downshift, then take their foot off the break. The momentum of the car then causes the rpms to increase to a point it could have stayed in the previous gear. To combat this, after downshifting, keep your foot on the break for about 2 seconds or so before you let back off it, to ensure the rpms dont rise for no reason.

If you put the car into sports mode, it will automatically shift itself, albeit at different RPMS. However if at any point you DO shift with the paddles, you must continue to do so until you redo the process of turning from drive to sport. @scottperaza9333
@scottperaza9333 3 года назад
Mine was somewhere around there too. It wastes a lot of fuel just because of the engine size. I was getting around 21 mpg. I now have a 4 cylinder Toyota Camry and average around 31 mpg. And if I’m really conscious of my driving I can get 40 mpg highway. In addition the fuel cap of the Ford Fusion is the type you just push the gas nozzle into rather than unscrew, which isn’t good for fuel economy because fuel will vaporize and escape the gaps the fuel flap leaves
@simpleinstants
@simpleinstants 3 года назад
@@scottperaza9333 Yeah. The fuel capless system I agree that is a pain that only causes that fuel vaporize. I will have this Fusion for 1 year more and will see better options. @scottperaza9333
@scottperaza9333 3 года назад
@@simpleinstants I have a black 2019 Camry SE. the interior and exterior look (in my opinion) better than the Ford Fusion. I kind of miss the power of the turbo in my Ford Fusion. But getting so much better gas mileage and reliability is worth it. I have always loved Toyota as a company but couldn’t afford a Toyota at the time I got my Ford Fusion. Besides that Toyota didn’t have the nice looking 2019 SE redesign at that time. Other than that, I lost out on navigation but I basically always used my phone for navigation anyway. I lost out on heated mirrors. But that hasn’t been a big deal. If you have the money it’s worth it to get a Camry XSE. Then you won’t miss anything. In exchange I gained keyless entry, and push to start. Those alone made it worth it. As well as the safety features like lane departure, and dynamic radar cruise control. On top of that I know my Camry will last 150k miles plus with basic maintenance. Where as my fusion had a fuel pump issue at like 60,000 miles. In other words you cannot argue with Toyota’s reliability. You lose some features for the same price but in exchange get a much more well built car. Check out the 2020 Camry SE. make sure you get one with apple car play/android auto. Which some have. And that lets your phone integrate with your vehicle so your navigation shows on the dash. Or if you can manage, get a XSE.

@@scottperaza9333 I have googled on the Toyota Camry and have noticed that after 2018/19 redesign the interior and the face looks so great!, definitely there is no point of comparison. Thanks for the detailed explanation, I will give an opportunity to Toyota when I need to replace my Ford. In the meantime I will have an eye on the fuel pump! Just to adding information about the rpm on idle. Today I connected an OBD II interface and I get out to drive for a couple of hours. I was monitoring the rpms on idle and get a value of 748 rpms on idle... Turns out that all this time I was reading wrongly the Instrument Control Panel, this is because Ford made it really confuse!: I was thinking that the lines on tachometer indicate values of 1000, 2000, 3000... etc., however they indicate values of 500, 1500, 2500.. etc. I'm happy that my engine is in the average rpm on idle. Anyway, the engine always will consume a lot of fuel due the fact we have discussed previously, it is a turbocharged direct gasoline injection engine.

In D only, no gear counter should show by the rpm’s. Technically even in sports mode (unless you touch the paddle shifters) nothing should be showing either (for the orange number). If the car sounds like it’s not straining than the cars computer is picking the appropriate gears and you are fine. But if you are still under warranty I would get it looked at.

sports mode changes the times at which the car switches gears, allowing for higher speeds to be achieved faster. (aka it holds onto gears longer, which you cannot make an automatic car do. only sports mode and select shift allows this) it increases torque, stiffens the suspension, tightens steering.

actually sports mode affects the tightness of the steering, as well as the suspension in many if not most vehicles these days. Some people like to drive in sports mode without shifting at higher rpms due to a different driving experience.

@@TechBrosGamingChannel and? You asked why use sports mode if you won’t redline. That’s why. I upgraded to a 2019 Camry se at the end of 2019. I still drive in sports mode at times even if I’m not redlining. Because it’s more than just increasing rpms. Otherwise they would reserve sports mode for 6 cylinders and up if it was ONLY for speed purposes

@@scottperaza9333 first of all I never asked that, and if you look at any detailed review of the specs in the car you would no it doesn't affect anything more than the transmission. What it ACTUALLY does is give you a little more torque by holding the gears to higher rpms (hense why it revs higher unless you shift it yourself). This gives you more torque going up hills, acceleration, etc... if you look at anyone who does a review of this car they specifically say that it does NOT affect anything but that.

@@scottperaza9333 also you don't shift a car that low either. You're gonna kill your gears as much as shifting too high.
