By far the most informative instruction video that I have found. Easy to understand. Thank you for taking the time helping people save money. Great job.
Thanks for your kind words. I did it because I couldn't find a good video out there myself so I knew it was a good idea. I know I'm not the best on camera or have the best equipment or angles but the process is there atleast
I have a feeling this video will continue to help people for years to come! Hands down the best fluid change demonstration for Ford Fusions on RU-vid. Thank you!
Thank you for your positive feed back. The reason I made it was because I couldn't find a good one so I tried my best make a straight forward and to the point HOW TO video. I'm glad you found it helpful!
@@THEDriverMod_ Hey, I didn’t forget to use your link for Amsoil trans fluid! I’ll be changing it as soon as spring gets here. Woke up this morning CEL light was on, ran codes. Got the typical p0456 evap very small leak. From my understanding vacuum is leaking from capless fuel tank. I’ve done cleaned it and jostled it with a little wd40. That has keep the code off for the most part. This morning same code came on, along with P1450 $07E8 and P1450 $07E8pd. I’ve never seen these two other codes pop up before, I’ve done some research already. Could be charcoal can, evap purge valve, or kink lines? Have you ever seen these codes? Any advice🙏🏼
Yessir! What was your name so when I see it go through I can keep an eye on it? I have a video on how to replace the purge valve for a 2.0L ecoboost, I am 99 percent sure that's what it is.
Great..I've seen many videos to change my fusion transmission fluid and none explain it as well as yours. We clearly see you know what you are doing... Congratulations.
Thanks, great instructions. I was able to do this in my garage, without a lift. I jacked up the front driver corner, remove the wheel, then lowered it to make it level, and still had enough room underneath to do all the steps of the process. Thanks.
@@THEDriverMod_ Castrol Mercon LV. About 4.5 quarts. I’ve done it 3 times before but could never find the fluid leveling hole; I had just refilled the approx same amount as had drained. This time I was assured it was at the full level. I’m always amazed how dark the used fluid is in this transmission. My other cars (Toyota’s, Chevys, Honda’s) never have trans fluid this dark. I think I’ve done enough ~5 qt drain/refills over the time I’ve owned this 2016 to prevent a failure.
@@Al_Ting378the only negative thing I see about these transmissions is the fact you can't replace the filter (unless tearing the whole thing apart). Other than that, they seem to be fairly solid
@@BigHRepair Unfortunately they are not all that solid. There are big lawsuits about it if you google it. Hopefully yours and mine prove to be from a good batch!
@@Al_Ting378Mercon LV tends to get dark as compared to earlier versions but it doesn’t mean it’s toast. It’s recommended you do the procedure every 30K miles. I believe if you do a drain and refill every 30 K you don’t need to do it multiple times.
Thanks you! Great clear instructions, did it on my fusion with 90k on it today, fluid was very black but didn’t smell ! Might do it again in 3k miles to get what didn’t drain today.
You're welcome! I would do it again in another 20k just to get back on top of the fluid especially if you don't know if it's original or not. Highly recommend using yhe Amsoil fluid as well as it protects far better than the OEM ATF does. Www.premiumsyntheticsusa.myamsoil.com
Exceptional service and video, thanks for sharing this with us all. I noticed my trans seem to shift hard at times. This makes me confident that I could do this myself.
Glad to see it's exactly like a GM hydramatic 6T series transmission. If they don't have a dipstick and AREN'T leaking I measure how much oil is removed with an old oil jug. Then refill with the same amount of dex vi or equivalent synthetic transmission fluid. My wife's Cruze 6T40 transmission was exactly 3.5 quarts every time. Do that every other oil change and your transmission will outlast the motor.
Thank you this video and the full format. Many people like to skip parts because it is obvious to them already. I prefer to just hit the arrow key if there is a part I am already familiar with. What I am familiar with might not be the same as the next guy watching.
FIRST!! Actually a good video. Other videos showed a different socket to open the check hole. So I had to make a run to the local hardware store for the tool. Luckily I had another car while the Fusion was on jack stand.
I did my transmission service at about 50,000 miles and after they did it the technician showed me that the fluid came out all black. They put in fresh fluid and my transmission and car still run great
The LV motorcraft fluid gets dark extremely quickly, I recommend you switch the Amsoil Transmission fluid through the link in the video description and do the service again. Did they do a drain and fill or a full flush?
Appreciate the video alot. Seeing the lack of video tutorials for basically anything on the fusions, this is a breathe of fresh air. The fusion i just purchased has 61k miles & im ab 90% sure the trans hasnt had a service yet. That being said, would you think doing the fluid drain-fill the next 3 oil changes would get damn near all that nasty OEM garbage out & most amsoil in? Thanks!
The best video that i have seen on changing the transmission fluid. I have two fusions a 2016 and a 2018 both running the 1.5 GDI Turbo Ecoboost engines. Both cars are running AMSOIL Signature Series OW30 engine oil. The 2016 has had a transmission flush with the AMSOIL Signature series LV fluid but i don't like the way it was done because the ford dealer flush machine only told them to add four quarts of my oil to the transmission. AMSOIL said it took nine quarts to do a transmissions change. Ordered two cases of Transmission fluid from AMSOIL to do the transmissions in both cars so i have to do some checking to see why they only used four quarts of transmission fluid when i wanted it all changed out !!! I will get the transmission fluid changed on the 2018 when i find out what is going on at the ford dealer. Doesn't the technician know what he is doing !!!!
I just had my fwd 2015 fusion titanium 2.0 ecoboost transmission drain and fill service done for the first time at 49k miles. Had it changed with the manufacturer recommended Motorcraft Mercon LV. I use full synthetic for oil changes. I fill it with 91 octane ⛽ only. My car is in excellent condition and stock; besides installing a K&N cold air intake. I recommend that, it slightly improved mpg and power (10 HP, 9 TQ); sounds better too.(4 months ago I replaced all original 4 tires with Toyo extensa hp 2; all season budget performance tires. It's been a good car since purchasing in early 2019.
I worked at the dealership and I can atest to the mercon fluid and how fast it breaks down. Definitely make sure you change it every 30-40k or you'll be replacing the transmission or atleast the torque convertor sooner than later. I'm at 194k on my 2015, original transmission, un opened. Using the Amsoil transmission fluid since it's first change at 37k
@@THEDriverMod_luckily, I own 1 car and that's all I need/want to maintain and keep nice for a lONG time. ALOT of people spend way too much money buying fancy new cars and way too often to boot. Vehicles are wealth/financial killers LoL.
@@THEDriverMod_ How come you decided to not do any more changes after the initial one on your car? Is this mainly due to the Amsoil fluid being rated for higher mileage or curiosity of your own to see if you will have any issues with no fluid change after the initial one?
Definitely recommend and use the Amsoil fluid linked in the description. I'll become your sponsoring dealer and be able to answer all sorts of questions you might have.
Not sure if it makes any difference but some other techs advise to put in about 4.5 quarts and then drive the car and get it to operating temperature to give the fluid the chance to expand.
Awesome instruction on this, best video I've ever seen for the 2015-era Ford Fusion Titanium. However, just because the fluid is black, doesn't mean it's got transmission problems. Using Motorcraft Mercon LV, and only doing 1-2 fluid flushes, won't get all the black out. Even after doing a full flush of the system, won't guarantee that it'll stay red very long. The nature of Mercon LV isn't the same as other fluids, and it will darken in color considerably quickly.
I aware ot gets darker quicker than most, it took me about 4 or 5 drain an fills over a 50k span to get the fluid to come out red in color. Now I just do 2 Amsoil drain and fills every 30k miles or so. I'm at 180k now on the car, still all original powertrain
@@THEDriverMod_ U convinced me enough to buy my first jug of of AMSOIL OE ATF. I didn't get the Signature Series. I do have a cousin who's a dealer so I got a 2.5 gallon for $115 w/shipping. Which is about $50 more than similar amount of Mercon LV in 2 5-quart jugs. Since you posted this video, I've actually acquired a 2nd Fusion, a Hybrid. It's a love to replace the fluid on that car, as everything is done from below with a pump. You should do another video on that.
great video, why do you not recommend "flushing" the transmission at the dealer? My 2.0L fusion AWD has 84,000 miles on it been wanting to service the trans. It shifts great other than the occasional harsh shift.
It's just more aggressive on the transmission as it is in an active state while the service is being performed while a drain and fill is a passive, less aggressive service
That plug took me 5 minutes to take out and 10 to put it back on my 2017 SE, that transmission line is in the way, must have been an "improvement" in the design.
My 2017 got a new transmission under warranty at just 42k miles. Im at 74k miles now and just did one drain and fill. Fluid was already very dark with just the slightest tint of red. Gonna do another drain and fill bc i do not like how dark that fluid was but i keep reading its normal for Ford's fluid.
@@THEDriverMod_ I know this is off topic, but what do you think of using 5w30 instead of 5w20? - I ask because my car uses like 5.7 quarts and it's so difficult to find 6 quarts of 5w20, but 5w30 is so easy.. is it that bad if I use 5w30?
Thanks, some say that they have seen in some charts where Ford says using 5w30 can damage some components or things like that or may throw off some sensors.
It's not that critical, and if you know what you're doing then you can accurately guess how much more you have to put in when it's not up to temp... it's an acquired skill. 158k miles on mine and still going strong doing it that way
I am fully aware but if it's coming out of the hole barely at 140 degrees for arguments sake, it doesn't expand that much when I hits 170 plus. Be doing it like this for years and never had an issue, you just gotta account for it and know what you're doing. Being a couple tenths over filled or undefiled is not a huge issue
You can definitely go drive it if you want. I do cycle it through the gears and let it get some temperature just sitting in the shop. Not driving it won't cause a problem
Why not drain the fluid, remove the side leveling bolt, level the vehicle and fill until it comes out of the side port as a start? Start the car, level the car, run until operating temp, remove the side leveling bolt and drain any excess.
Thank you a very clear and very precise step-by-step instruction video. Would this eliminate the very fine grinding sound on my 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid SE. Noise started 2weeks ago, I have not changed my transmission fluid, according to FORD this should be done every 100K miles. My transmission was replaced by FORD at 140K and was under warranty, I am now on 200K miles. Please advice.
Changing the fluid would not remedy your concern and having experience with the internals of this transmission I would highly recommend changing the fluid every 40-50 k miles.
I just got finished with this job myself. My 2.5l SE 2014 fusion doesn't have a 10mm hex plug on the right side of the axle. It does have a 14mm hex bolt on the left. I'm assuming that's the leveling plug for it. However, I just measured what came out and replaced that much. I'll probably repeat the process in the spring. Only 3.25 quarts came out.
Well done! I was wondering why not just measure the quantity of the fluid removed and replace with exactly the same amount? I would think you could then skip the leveling procedure.
Better safe than sorry, plus, the fluid you are pouring in is not at operating temperature. The fluid level is only accurate at operating temp. You would be surprised by how far it is off by.
Ford Fusion 2.0 Ecoboost (80,000 miles) experiencing slightly delayed shifting only going into 3rd gear. Would it be a bad idea to drain and fill new fluid into the transmission? (I’m aware of the danger changing a worn transmission’s fluid). Or should I look at resetting the transmission’s adaptive learning from the TCM? Ford wants to charge an arm and leg just to hook the TCM up and reset the adaptive learning. The delayed shift into 3rd gear can be prevented by using the paddle shifter and manually shifting at a lower rpm from 2nd to 3rd in stop and go traffic. If I let the transmission shift on it’s own. The delay does not always occur. The delayed shifting doesn’t seem to correlate with engine temp or the temp outside either. What’s really interesting is when you put it into sport mode. The transmission will almost always have a delayed shift from 2nd to 3rd around 3k-4K rpm range (same rpm range the automatic shifts at on its own). It shifts smoothly if you red line it into 3rd.. or if you shift at 1k-2.5k rpm range. Are any other Ford Fusion owners experiencing this issue? I’m looking at Drain/refill trans fluid. Or find a shop that has a computer capable of resetting the TCM’s adaptive learning.
That's a super common issue. Changing the fluid is gonna help regardless of what you are experiencing. A drain and fill a couple times isn't gonna damage anything like a flush would. Mine has the same issue, it's never gotten any better or worse. I've got 174k on mine now. Been doing the trans fluid ever 35-40k miles using the Amsoil fluid featured in the video
@@THEDriverMod_ The relief this comment just gave me lol! I bought this car used. It’s nice to know that you made it to 174k and that you’ve been experiencing it for awhile. Mine hasn’t gotten worse or better either. I’ll be doing a drain and fill as soon as the temp warms up a bit. You are a legend Thank you! 🤜🏼🤛🏼
Is the 6 speed auto on the same era focus (2015) the same ? I think its a 6f15 - not sure mines ever been serviced it's at 58k miles so will probably require a few flushes. Great video and thanks
You're welcome and I'm no sure honestly. The only automatic focuses from 2012-2019 that I know of is the DCT trans which is significantly different. But that's here in the states
Yeah I did not buy that transmission due research. Apparently the head gasket due to the block on the 1.5 eco boost are a bit hows your father from this era but hopefully I'll get some good miles before that happens, if it ever does.
Never drain fluid out of any gearbox until you first check level plug will remove, also gears should be moved and held for approx 20seconds in both directions ,,
It'll be close enough. Just make sure the fluid meets the spec, go on to amsoils website and use the vehicle locator tab to make sure you get the right stuff. If you're mechanically inclined I know you can manage around the slight possibly differences. Www.premiumsyntheticsusa.myamsoil.com
Well done, thank you for sharing! I just bought a 2015 se today, thinking of tackling this myself but have limited resources. What is your opinion on measuring what was drained and simply adding that much fluid back?
if its your first time doing it, you dont know if the fluid is at the correct level to begin with or if it was properly filled the last time it was service other wise that would work.
I have almost 80,000 miles on my 2016 fusion. Purchased it in early 2019 with under 25,000 miles on it. I haven’t changed the transmission fluid yet. It still runs pretty good but occasionally get hard jumpy like shifts. I was under the impression that you couldn’t change your transmission fluid yourself on these cars and have been hesitant to take to dealer for a flush. Now you got me nervous by talking internal trans damage that fluid changes can’t fix. Do you think it would be wise to try and change fluid myself and see what happens, or is that too risky? You got me ready to buy 6 qts of AMSoil and get busy putting in work.
Doing a drain and fill doesn't cause issues like doing a flush will. Definitely get the drain and fill done, i would then do a 2nd one back to back of the first. Just to get more of the old fluid out. The link to the oil is in the video description! Good luck, it's not to bad to do it yourself
I'll give yall a tip. Just measure how much comes out the bottom and put that amount back in with the new fluid. Saves yourself time and you don't have to open the plug on the side of the Trans.
Great tip, so if the transmission is under filled or overfilled prior to the service, it will be underfilled or overfilled when you're done. Why didn't I think of that!
Great video! I was curious is it necessary to remove the plug from behind the wheel till some fluid seeps out or will filling it with 4-5 containers be enough?
Thank you. If it's coming out black, I recommend definitely doing another drain and fill because that means you are behind on the fluid Maintenance interval
