Ford Lightning Build - Upgrading the Fuel System

In today's video, we are upgrading the fuel system by installing fuel rails, an Aeromotive aftermarket adjustable fuel pressure regulator, and -6an stainless braided return line on the Ford SVT Lightning project race truck build! The install went well, and I will show you how to do it, along with everything you need to know! Lets get this beast the fuel it needs to make some horsepower!

- 97 fuel rails -
Found at your local pick n pull or junkyard, off any 97-98 5.4l equiped vehicle (f150, expedition, ect ) OR ask on the forums, generally someone is selling a set
- Adjustable Regulator -

- High temp thread sealant
- 1/8 npt 90 elbow
- 1/8 npt female coupler

@@one_day_at_a_time9915 5-6k if being built locally, maybe more, just make sure it’s a reputable shop, with lots of Ford mod motor experience. Definitely don’t wanna cut corners or go cheap!

What do you set the regulator at did you make a video about that

@@RACERHOLESHOT528 set it to 39psi with the vacuum reference not connected, it should drop to around 32-34psi with it connected.

Great idea Great design I have been using it on my 4.6 2v i plan on supercharging for 6 months. I have dual lightning pumps running full time. I used the aeromotive regulator in your video. It just blew out While idling in the driveway. Fuel mixture went 9:1. I noticed in your latest videos you are going for upgraded superchargers. Might want a FPR with a more reliable track record.

You said you had to loop extra line through the frame... would 10' be enough? Your link is for a 12' piece

Rick Merchant I left them as is and my tuner has the pumps running at 100% in the tune. Pretty much bypassed by the tune. Thanks for the kind words, I appreciate ya watchin! 😁🤘

Thanks man! I'd go with American Racing Headers, they have the largest primary size on the market, and sound really good! I'm extremely happy with mine. They are a bit pricey, but well worth it.

But like you said you just never know when. I haven't taken my truck to the Dino yet. i installed a AEM dual fuel pumps. 342lph E85 compatible. just hope is not too much fuel 🤞🤞😊 I will let you know. how much hp is the stock fuel rail good for and can you use it for e85 the setup you installed with the 1997 rail ...im guessing you just have to chang the back fuel line on the rail also ..let me know thanks

The stock or 97 rails are good for up to 700whp, the Feed/return lines are good for about 625-650, most upgrade those to -8an feed/-6an return, to have a 700hp capable system. They will work with e85, just keep in mind you need 30% more fuel, so you loose hp capability due to the flow demand e85 requires

@@DebtLife_Projects ya i was thing to getting aftermarket fuel rails but I see what you have done and I like it then I will just swap out the lines and what fuel pump setup do you have ? Do you know if a 2001 5.4 not lighting would have the same tank setup?

Im running dual Walbro 255's, Im not sure on the non lightning setups, no idea what pumps they run.

Hi I've been watching your videos, nice work. My friend have a 04 lightning we just put an engine in it. It's a built bottom end stock heads. We're having some issues, he's using DW 95lb injectors and wallbro 255 pumps. It's running lean sometimes and too rich sometimes without going into boost. I'm thinking the fuel pressure is not right because of the bigger pumps. It still has the stock fuel rail and regulator as well as the stock lines, but I think it needs a adjustable regulator. What do you think?

Dwight I have a similar problem, does yours have a hard start too? ever since the motor replacement I've had a hard start and bouncing idle. I had stock pumps then ran lean at the dyno then went with 255 pumps running all the time. Still have the bouncing idle and since then I've replaced cam position sensor crank position sensor idle control valve and now im thinking its the fuel pressure regulator, IDK though.... But I just keep chasing this bouncing idle so if anyone has any input lmk!!

@@kevincastonguay5690 hi Kevin, no I don't have any problems starting just running very rich and when I'm driving sometimes it shuts off when coming to a stop or slowing down. I believe it doing that because the fuel pressure is too high. I ordered the aeromotive fuel rail kit with the adjustable regulator that should take care of the problem. I was trying to find an adjustable regulator that could fit in the stock rails but couldn't find anything.

3 years later by pass the fuel pump speed resistor run the pumps full time wide open. The computer is switching the resistor in and out trying to regulate pump speed.

Depends on your power level, what your combo is, ect. A lot of variables. But the rails are good up to 700hp, so if your nowhere near that then you’ll be fine.

How far will 6an fuel lines get you? I see that you had quite a bit of extra line after you installed these lines. I wonder if this would be a good amount for my Harley truck or would I need more?

Length wise? I'd say you should have enough, I had at least 3 extra feet of line that I had to loop up into the frame rails. But don't quote me on that, cause I'd hate for you to be deep into an install and be short lol.
