How to set Base Fuel Pressure on a Boost Reference Fuel System

In this video, I demonstrate how to adjust Base Fuel Pressure on a Boost Reference Fuel System. This is something that your tuner will likely ask you to do when you get your pickup tuned. Basically all regulators and fuel systems work this way when they are boost reference, return style, this just happens to be done on my Ford F150 SVT Lightning. The fuel pressure regulator I'm using is Accufab FREG94 although I'm sure there are several suitable options.

Do you need a regulator for e85 conversion
@605BOLT
@605BOLT 3 года назад
Basically yes. Maybe if you don't change pulleys or injectors or anything you could get away with it but I wouldn't even want to try. Best to ask your tuner but I am going to just about guarantee you will need one. 👍

Thanks for the feedback man really appreciate it, can you tell how many pumps you have and what kind? And do you have to switch to a return style?
@605BOLT
@605BOLT 3 года назад
@@isaacgarcia9825 All lightnings come factory with a return style fuel system and dual pumps. It's really quite a nice feature. So on my truck, I swapped out the original pumps. I think they were about 180lph pumps. I switched to Walbro 255lph pumps and kennel bell boost a pump.

Wow man thanks for the info It really helps with my build, didn’t know about the factory double pumps or the flow rate, so all I basically need is pumps and a regulator?
@605BOLT
@605BOLT 3 года назад
@@isaacgarcia9825 yes, pumps, Regulator, 97 f150/expedition fuel rails, a larger return line, and injectors. So a few more things. But it's not terrible. Mine has the 97 rails, regulator, DW 95lb injectors, bigger return line, dual 255 pumps, and a boost a pump. But it really depends how much power you want to make and on what fuel. E85 requires more fuel for a given power level so that's why it has so many upgrades. Can't get 93 in my town but you can get super hot E85 so no worries.

Thanks for this video. Helped me figure out an issue with my fuel pressure on my E85 1999 Saleen S281. I had set my pressure with the reference attached while the car was in vacuum. so rather than seeing around 45 psi like I should vacuum, I was seeing 55 which is my base pressure target. And in boost, which my car peaks out around 11psi, it was asking for essentially 80 psi, which the pump just could not do so I’ve watched my fuel pressure jump initially to around 75psi then drop to around 50 by the end of the gear. I’m only running a single Walbro 525 with 2020 GT500 injectors on a stock block 2v with stock rails and on a MS3 Pro

My 02 lightning stumbles at wot with no obd codes After listening to what you said I suspect fuel delivery problem Thanks for sharing bro
@605BOLT
@605BOLT 2 года назад
Mine will stumble at WOT if I am at about 3/8 tank or lower and do a hard dig. The fuel sloshes back and the pumps suck air and fuel pressure drops. I always keep at least a half tank in the truck to prevent this. Maybe that will help you as well. Good luck with your truck. I'd be curious to hear what your problem is.
@605BOLT
@605BOLT 2 года назад
SCT Livewire could possibly help yes. Best tool for finding fuel pressure issues would be either a fuel pressure guage obviously or a wideband setup. Both of those should make a fueling issue quite obvious. That leaking Y fitting is a common problem so you could be on the right track there. Good luck!

@@B1GM1KE57 hell ya man. It's actually pretty simple the egr. Buy a kit from JC customs. Mention you saw his parts on my channel if you remember. I have a question since your videos are crazy helpful, do you have the fuel pressure guage reading rail pressure?
@605BOLT
@605BOLT Год назад
That gauge on my pillar pod is reading the output side of the fuel pressure regulator. That is directly tied to the fuel rail so the reading on my pillar pod setup is actual fuel rail pressure, yes. Sorry for the long answer.

@modlist6129
@modlist6129 2 года назад
Does your fuel pressure stay at 50 all the time? Or obviously lower like 45? Because it’s got the vacuum line connected? I ask because I notice that after a long drive my fuel pressure drops about 2-4 psi from the base pressure “40psi” and I end up with 36-38 psi with the vacuum line off
@605BOLT
@605BOLT 2 года назад
Right. If you set your base at 50 say and then you hook up the vacuum line again at like -2lbs vacuum then it will drop to like 48 lbs or so. Rough figuring.
@modlist6129
@modlist6129 2 года назад
@@605BOLT the thing is that let’s say for example I set it at 50 after like an hour or so of driving I get home and I check the fuel pressure again it’s at 46-48 with the vacuum line disconnected and if I check it like 3 hours later it’s back to 50 psi with the vacuum line disconnected that’s what idk if it’s normal or not. Only guess I can think of is fuel gets hot and becomes dense therefore I loose fuel pressure
@605BOLT
@605BOLT 2 года назад
I can't say that I've ever really looked at that scenario but something could be going on there. For a lightning, there is a little hose in the tank that can burst and bleed off fuel pressure. Idk if you're working on a Lightning or a Cobra but that COULD be the problem. I've never noticed mine dipping in a similar fashion to how you say.
@modlist6129

@@605BOLT it’s happening on my 03 cobra it has a return style fuel system with a whipple 2.3 idk if it’s normal or not so I figured I would ask, thanks for the reply tho. I’m leaning towards the fuel getting to hot making me loose that fuel pressure 😅

If your running a blow through carb would you run line to the carb hat or intake?
@605BOLT
@605BOLT 2 года назад
If you want to do boost reference on a blow through carb, I'm pretty sure you want intake manifold pressure as your reference. Basically you want to be sampling what is closest or an example of the pressure the injector tips will see. That's my understanding but not an expert on blow through setups.

@@deadendgarage5401 ya I think it's basically the same. Pretty certain the same at WOT where boost is high and the butterflies are open. "The NT05R is going to be the more aggressive drag radial as it is going to have the softer compound and the larger contact patch to assist you in putting the power down to the pavement."

@@605BOLT how do you delete that and why?
@605BOLT
@605BOLT 2 года назад
You delete it just by removing the solenoid, capping the port on the supercharger and by venting the tank to atmosphere rather than allowing it to be fed back into the engine via the original tubing routing. I deleted that and my EGR system to clean up the engine bay and make supercharger removal quicker/easier. Also, this way there is less junk going through the supercharger and engine (exhaust gases via the EGR and fuel vapors via the EVAP system). Just makes the whole setup simpler and cleaner looking.
