1969-1970
For 1969 the LTD was completely new from the previous years with all new sheet metal and a completely redesigned interior. The LTD seemed to take after Chrysler's famed "fuselage" style that they introduced this year on their full-size line, which to some made the LTD look less sleek and a bit larger and heavier than before (which it was). The headlights were still hidden, and a body-colored center divider split the grille horizontally. Taillights (either intentionally or unintentionally) resembled the 1966 model, with an additional red-reflective taillight panel that ran across the rear of the car below the taillights above the bumper. Inside, the new dashboard wrapped around the driver which put many more controls closer to the touch, but many critics ridiculed the radio position, which was now to the upper left, defying convention. Also, the headlight knob was located under the dashboard which defeated the purpose of convenience and the ashtray faced the passenger, so smokers were out of luck.
There was still a 4-door hardtop and 5-door wagon, but the 2-door hardtop was now available in 2 different styles - a formal 2-door hardtop, or a semi-fastback style with a "flying butress" rear window design shared with the XL series ("sportsroof", in Ford language). The 302 remained the base powerplant with the 351 and 390 as options, but the 427 and 428s were no longer available, being replaced by the 429 V8, a 2bbl version rated at 320 hp or a 4bbl "ThunderJet" rated at 360 hp. The front side marker lights were white accompanied by the engine displacement callouts.
The 1970 LTD had the same body as in 1969, but with a different front clip that eliminated the body-colored horizontal divider (but retained the hidden headlights). The tail treatment was revised also - the red reflective tail panel was eliminated and the taillights went from square to rectangular, and they also got rid of the reverse lights in the center, a first for the LTD since its introduction. They were now on the rear bumper. Inside, the door handles eliminated the squeeze-type in favor of a more conventional pull-type. Ignition switches were moved from the dashboard to the steering column this year, like the rest of the Ford line. The front side marker lights were changed from white to amber, and the engine displacement callouts were eliminated. All bodystyles and drivetrain choices carried over from 1969. Brougham models were now the top trim, which included full wheel covers, more ornate trim inside and out among other luxurious touches. Drivetrain choices were the same as 1969.
THE 1973 LTD models were completely redesigned from the 1971-72 generation. Dimensions didn't change much, but the body was all new. Convertibles and 4-door hardtops were gone, but the 2-door hardtop, 4-door "pillared" sedan and 5-door wagon were still available. Base engine was now the smaller 5.8L (351) 2 bbl V8, with the 400 and 429 as options. The 400 was standard on the wagon. Broughams remained the top trim models. Interiors and dashboard designs were all new, but the layout was similar to the previous. To continue LTD tradition, a sectioned red reflective taillight strip ran between the taillights, and the "LTD" initials returned in the middle. For the first time since its introduction, the LTDs now shared the same sedan rear roofline with its lesser Galaxie and Custom brothers. A 3-speed automatic transmission was the sole transmission choice.
The 1976 LTD models differed very little from the 1975 restyle other than the catalytic converter becoming standard on some models depending on where it was sold. Base engine was still the 351, with the 400 and 460 optional, with the 400 still standard on the wagon models.
There weren't many changes in 1977 either, other than the 351 becoming available on the base model wagons, but it isn't known if this was actually made standard or as a "credit option" to the 400 V8 that was previously standard. All models now had a catalytic converter and the speedometers now read 85 MPH, down from 120.
1978 LTDs stood pretty much the same for their final year in this present form. Now that GM redesigned their full size Chevrolet Caprice and Impala the year prior and Chrysler dropped their full-size Dodge Royal Monaco and Plymouth Gran Fury models altogether this year, the LTD (and its companion the Mercury Grand Marquis) were the "lone wolfs" of the old-school full-size cars left (unless you include the much-less-popular Chrysler Newport/New Yorker). The LTD would become an all-new smaller redesigned model for 1979.

Since I was born in 1951 I remember cars like the second generation Ford LTD. These are cars from a past era that will never be made again. At least there are some these cars as classic cars that have been restored. These were large full size cars, with a large V8 engine, body on a frame construction, and rear wheel drive with a solid axle. The result was luxurious car that had lots of interior room and also had a quiet smooth ride on the road and comfortable sofa type seats. These were land yacht cars.

This really takes me back. Back in the day, my family had the '69, '72 and '76 LTDs before buying the downsized '79, which still had lots of room but in a smaller package, along with the added benefit of better handling. Obviously we were definitely a Ford family! After the LTDs, my Dad switched it up, but still remained loyal to Ford, as he moved up to the Mercury Grand Marquis LS for the rest of his life. Me? Well...I'm still driving a Ford!

As a young guy, my first car I bought was a 78 LTD. It taught me how to tune and work on old engines and gave me a love of the simplicity. Mine has the 400, which I plan on rebuilding with proper heads and pistons to do the cubes some justice. At this rate, I'd much rather spend the money I would have to front for a new car by acquiring an older one and building it how I want. I prefer the 71 the most for it's body style, so I'm keeping an eye out down the road for a good (rust free) survivor.

I have a similar history! My grandmother with whom we lived bought a new '69 LTD 4 door hardtop with the Brougham option and 429. Shortly thereafter, my parents bought a '70 Galaxie 4 door sedan, and then in 1975, a new LTD Landau 4 door pillared hardtop. All the while, my uncle down the street was buying new Mercury Marquis Broughams and the Grand Marquis'. I really thought our loaded '75 Landau matched the Mercurys in luxury; in fact our car actually shared most of it's interior trim panels and materials with my uncle's Grand Marquis. I always considered the fully optioned variants of the '75-78 LTD Landau to be "sensibly sized Lincolns".

My parents purchased a brown 1973 LTD equipped with the 429/four barrel carburetor that was probably about three years old at the time. It was top of the line, and was a quiet, extremely comfortable car. I was going on about nine years old at the time, but was excited because we had visited a good family friend (sales manager) with my dad and looked at several vehicles. We got to cruise around in a very cool dune buggy (knowing we were driving it just for fun as my dad already had a baja bug). The LTD was mainly my mom's car, and is large, safe and nice, so it we took it homer later that day. We kept it until we left California in mid-1978, driving a then-new Toyota Celica. The thought of that LTD brought back some good memories :)

Correction: both the 1973 and 1974 Galaxie/LTD/LTD Brougham had a pillared 4-Door Sedan (colonnade style without framed glass) AND a true Hardtop Sedan. The true hardtop sedan was much less popular, however. In the mildly restyled 1975 models, the true hardtop sedan was eliminated. Also, the 1974 models were slightly longer because the rear bumper was moved outward in order to comply with the new mandated 5 mph standard (the 1973's rear bumper was closer to the body because of its mandated 2 1/2 mph standard). The 1975 to 1978 LTD Landau had a truly elevated standard of luxury that the Caprice Classic could not match...with available leather upholstery and polished aluminum wheels.

I was just about to mention that 74 was the last year for the 4 Hardtop. Also, Galaxie 500 was dropped after 74 and moved the LTD lower in the lineup to add the Landau. Only 5 small changes between a 73 to 74. rear bumper extended as mentioned. speedo needles went from white to red, 429 was dropped and the grille change with a hood ornament. 74 had a one year only Brougham velour interior option and from 74 to 78. Brougham models could have 4-wheel disc brakes.

My Parents had a light yellow '76 LTD four door, w/351M. My Pop worked for GM, but knew a good deal trumped loyalty to the brand as long as it was made in the US. Looked good, ran great, ride was pearl smooth, brocade interior. That thing yearned to be driven on trips, not short scoots around town. We used to go for (literal) Sunday drives after dinner into Pennsylvania and West Virginia and get back around dark. All three of us kids would be asleep in the backseat. I saw Jaws, Star Wars, and Close Encounters (amongst other flicks) from the backseat of that beautiful tank, while whiffing Winston cigarette smoke from the front--I knew he was awake when his cigarette was lit. We bought McD's before going into the drive-in and snuck it in. Man, those were great days--what a sedan!! Traded her for a Buick Electra Limited couple in 1979. Upscale choice, but not all purpose like that Ford LTD.

These have a special place in my heart since it was in a 1973 LTD coupe that I learned to drive, back in 1981. Love how the later cars got Lincoln-ized by getting optional hidden headlights. That gave the LTD an extra styling cue to flatter its curious name. It made them very elegant cars. And they rode just like they looked.

Common everyday family car of the era. A class of car known (back then) as 'bread and butter cars'. You could have a two door, four door or a station wagon - all LTDs, you could ORDER one like you wanted without being stuck with a package that had more and cost more than you wanted. Well built, reliable, roomy inside, and reasonably priced. Back then they were everywhere, the best full-sized car for the money. A lot of G.M. and Chrysler faith buyers switched to Ford by buying these cars.

We had a 71 and 73 Ford LTD and they were awesome cars. Especially that 73 because it was painted a kind of a dark orange rust color that was just beautiful along qith ANSI mage wheels that made it look a sports car. We had glass.packs on them and the sound was deep and throaty. I learned to drive on it and also wrecked it a bit. Thought my dad would be furious but he didn't get mad. I was seventeen. Boy, that was 1981 and we had that car for about 7 years without an incident. Then I got permission to take it to my friend's house one time and BOOM!! Smashed the front. It was never the same because we didn't take it to a master craftsman body shop. But it still looked good and drove well after repair. They had power. The 71 had a 400 and the 73 a 351. The 71 was heavier but it moved like greased lightening. Wish I had them now, even if the gas would cost me a lot. 🙏

Those cars rode like a dream. It was like riding down the highway on your couch. They also were so quiet you could set next to a train crossing and barely hear the train at all. They just don’t make cars any where near as good now. Even the new Lincoln’s ride like crap in comparison. You need two things for a great ride long wheelbase and weight.

@warmstrong5612
@warmstrong5612 Год назад
The frames of GM fullsize cars used thinner walled steel starting in 1971 while Ford fullsize frames stayed pretty much the same through 78. This obviously affected ride quality so GM tweaked the suspension but the frames shortcomings still showed through. Chrysler torsion-aire gave a firmer ride but allowed you to corner quicker, Fords heavy frame and softer suspension gave a better straight line ride, and GM was somewhere in the middle.

@@manher4335 true, especially on those Lincolns. The difference i think is Lincolns were more heavy in the back than that of a Cadillac, Ford use the same thing as Lincolns * not so much today. The difference i noticed in Ford against Chevy or dodge at that time is Chevy made good motors but not the best, Dodge were never too good , maybe average, Ford had either a ok cheap motor or a tough motor. This what separate Ford from the rest, they cars could drag alone even if there's a problem that doesn't stop motor or transmission right away, You can do some wild work with Ford, they wasn't intended to look as good of other vehicles in it's class but something that every can afford and count on getting them from point A to point B and hopefully have enough money in years to come to purchase that brand new Lincoln Town Car. Ford had a vision, the rest was 🧢ing and pretending to sale their cars. Ford stayed true to the script of a American should be able to buy a ok vehicle without breaking their pockets. Now take a look in 2023, Chevy back lights similar to Ford. Dodge begin to step back in the game but they'll die down again about 4 years from now. Toyota back end kinda looking like Ford, everyone wants their truck/suv to look similar to Ford and Range Rover. Chevy Corvette, stolen pieces from Ford gt and McLaren, GMC is gasping for oxygen, they sold alot but that debt is ridiculous. This automobile industry is about to get interesting. I say these will be the big hitters in 2024 - Toyota, Ford, Tesla, BMW

It's funny when you think about it back then, how it was such a big deal moving the key ignition switch from the dash to the steering wheel mount. On today's cars it's now back on the dash but there's no ignition key even necessary. However , I have to admit the craziest idea was putting the radio on the left side of the driver. It must've been designed by a left handed interior designer successfully slipping one by the Ford executives just for the fun of it. However, I do have to give him his props for trying.

We even had the Ford Landau which was a 2 door pillar less coupe. You can see lots of resemblances here too. Less than 1400 of the 2 doors were made from 73-76 only. It had the 460-4V and I mainly remember it would launch off a light but really didn't have much left once on the highway. This was of course the malaise era and it probably pumped out all of 200 HP, if that. Not much for something the size of a small home. It was sure comfortable though.
