Thank you much for the banjo bolt tip! We just inherited a 2010 Escape from grandma with 32k miles. I serviced the ptu as you recommend and saw what I thought was a dreaded seal leak. After watching this, I double checked and found the banjo bolt was the culprit and as loose as you described. That made my day!

Brian, thanks and nice video. Just bought a 2011 Escape hybrid with 60,000 miles. PTU went out 2,000 miles later at 62,000. PTU oil was nasty, nasty with bad bearings. Wanted to add, the trick to removing the dust deflector: use a heat gun on low setting, blowing both inside the hollow shaft and outside the dust deflector ring. Be patient. It will come right off with no damage if you take your time. I might add, the Ford service bulletin says not to attempt to pry it off. I'd also like to see a video on removing the transfer case and your comments on adding a drain plug to the later models that don't have a drain plug. It needs one desperately. Siphoning doesn't work because you can't get down to the really dirty stuff because the gears are in the way.

2010 Ford Flex Ecoboost AWD PTU failure noted at 55K miles in vehicle used primarily for daily transport of kids to bus stop and bi-weekly grocery run. Failure occurs because PTU is both lacking sufficient quantity of lubricant, and experiences thermal overload due to proximity to turbo, CAT, and exhaust routing. If you are wondering how vehicle with such light use could experience PTU issues; it is no mystery. Ford included static under-engine shield with air collection ports intended to channel ventilation. However due to static nature of design, cooling is only circulating with vehicle in motion. This implies parked vehicle with engine running creates super-heating event, in which various drive-train components are basically baked. These include EPAS, PTU, turbos, and more. Thermal overload must be considered as primary catalyst for many reported Ford engine, steering, and drive train failures. Thermal considerations represent missing link associated with many reported Ford issues. Heat related failures are often overlooked because of intrinsic elusive nature. PTU failure disposition noted depleted, degraded and thickened petroleum deposits internal to case. In addition to evidence of lubricant overflow at upper vent valve. This evidence and vehicle history are not consistent with overworked PTU heating from heavy use. But instead; repeated and severe thermal exposure events leading to lubricant degradation and subsequent failure. This disposition also consistent with frequency of reported PTU seal failures. Ford is fully aware of thermal issues across various vehicle lines; if you want proof, note PTU design in Ford police interceptor vehicles. Same PTU, but case includes active coolant system with external radiator. This is because police vehicles endure both hard use, and often sit for long periods of time with engine running, where engine efficiency is lowest and waste heat maximized. Another interesting document is Ford published PTU thermal profile diagram; which depicts Ford PTU case temperature profile during various vehicle operational dynamics. Ford pushes fact PTU case temperatures remain nominal during most dynamic operational scenarios; however Ford provides no data associated with static vehicle tests absent of coolant air-flow. Just an interesting example of how flaws are hidden in plain sight with deception. PTU replaced with later year version with lubricant drain plug. However, keep in mind nature of failure is not simply insufficient quantity of lubricant. Failure can be prevented with frequent lubricant change, but given nature of issue; 'very' frequent lubricant change is recommended (5-7K best guess).

I hope your doing well. We just bought a 2011 FLEX and I have been studying this heat problem. Breather vent on top can be optioned with transmission hose up to top right firewall with vent plug. Drain plug is great addition. Have you considered shielding for unit with space age material used in winter snowmobile mittens. Looks like white fiberglass but is same material used to shield the Spaceshutle?

Good video on a kind of unknown (to the general public at least) problem with this Ford part. Changed the PTU fluid in both my 10 Edge and 12 Mazda CX9. Kinda dirty job that has to be done through the fill plug (no drain...stoopit engineers) which is in a tight spot but definitely doable with a 12v pump & small diameter clear tubing to get as much of the old, burnt oil out. Clean the metal off the magnetic fill plug, refill until your new gear oil starts dribbling out of the fill plug hole (gonna need a pump for that too), replace & torque down the plug & enjoy your AWD until next year. Oh, and every 3 or 4 times, clean the threads on the plug & apply new sealant to them to prevent leaks from the plug.

Thanks for the Great Videos! I'm not a mechanic but like to learn about things. Bought a 2016 Edge AWD and learned from another one of your videos that I should not wait the recommended 100,000 miles before doing service to the transmission. Just had the transmission, transfer case and rear differential fluids replaced in the Edge. Great advice ... Thanks again for helping us non mechanics out here!

You literally just saved me time, money and sorrow. I changed the fluid on the PTU on my 08 Escape about 15k miles ago and there were no leaks. Went under the other day and it was covered in fluid. I almost just replaced the whole unit with a refurbished one figuring the seals were shot. It was only that one bolt holding the vent tube. Tightened it up and gonna put a little fluid back in. Thanks for posting!

Life time fluid on something that gets hot, has a tremendous amount of stress and only holds a few ounces of fluid. The engineers should’ve questioned themselves. this design couldn’t of looked good on paper

Recently drilled and tapped the case on my 13 lincoln mkx. Pretty easy. Fluid was dark but relatively clean and the magnetic drain plug had very little residue on it. But I noticed on the side of the PTU some markings done with a paint marker. I bought the car with 90,000 miles on it. Like new condition. I suspect the PTU has been replaced already. So now I'm going to change the fluid at least every 10,000 miles. One other thing I did was fabricate an air snorkel that flows air up towards the PTU to hopefully reduce the temperature in that area.

Nice explanation Brian. On that '10 Escape i recently replaced the leaky pinion seal the differential does not have a drain bolt but does have a fill plug......"non serviceable" is a complete joke. There should be consumer protection laws on the bullshit manufactures are pulling on us. Same thing with the 'in tank' fuel filters.....grrrr

I have a 2012 Lincoln MKZ AWD and my PTU started failing at 84K, had the oil replaced in the PTU, but it was too late. The existing oil was an "oily metal black soup", so I had damage to the internal gears. I ended up replacing it (Summit Racing was the cheapest) and just having my mechanic install it. I know that Ford is not going to cough up any cash for a bad design. Now I will be replacing my PTU oil yearly.

Just did the fluid change on my lincoln mks...along with the differential...I am not sure what the engineers were thinking about servicing this vehicle. No wonder why they called it lifetime fluids, because you can't get the fittings to change it. Oil, transmission fluid, ptu fluid, differential fluid...about 3.5 hours and a lot of cussing.

The PTU on an MkS is a different critter altogether. At least the Escapes have a drain plug that's accessible, unlike the one found on the 3.5/3.7 Duratecs. These are actually designed to be serviced.

Looks a bit like the drive unit in my ride on mower. Has trans and diff in one unit, separated with different oils. They said to throw it out, no service parts, that will be $900 sir. Took apart, replaced some broken cap bolts, rtv, refilled with 80W90 and good to go. Also a sealed for life gem. Should have done a vid.

AWD is fine if you know it's functioning properly, I wonder how many owners of AWD vehicles are driving around with only 2 wheels actually working....My driveway has a bit of a grade, when we had the good dump of snow a few yrs. ago I shovel the driveway & curb, drove my 2010 Ford Taurus till the rear wheels came to the curb then gave a little acceleration it didn't move only front wheels still in the snow spinning, good thing it was under warranty, new power transfer unit (PTU) $1700. plus labour. apparently the fluid in the PTU Ford says never needed replacing, they go at a little over 30000 KM & there's no plug at the bottom of the PTU to drain fluid only a plug on the top, with a number of owners having the PTU troubles Ford decided in 2013 to install a plug at the bottom of all PTUs, when they replaced mine I asked to have the newer PTU installed they said that it has to be the 2010 PTU for the warranty. ASS ..HO...Checked it out on the web, some owners found an area clear of the gears where they drilled & taped a hole for a plug. Others fed a tube into the top plug & sucked it out, at 30000 KM the fluid is SAE 75W - 140.

Just picked up a 13 explorer. After listening to my dad, on his 13 edge sport, say Ford didn't design the PTU properly and because it sits so close to the exhaust it gets so hot that it turns the gear lubes into sludge he also said there is no way for him to service it unless he removes the whole thing. You essentially have to make your own drain hole. Is this true how do I go about on my 13 explorer on maintenanceing this item.

Just did a post-mortem on my Edge PTU. It definitely had a seal leak and the fluid left inside turned to black sludge, BUT there's no sign of bearing damage. The damage is "limited" to almost every tooth on every gear having chips and galls. If this were a lubrication or heat issue, would not the bearings fail before the gearset?
@burgegerm7878
@burgegerm7878 5 лет назад
I am no expert, but I think it is like with rear ends, don't the pinion and ring gears go bad first if there is a lubrication issue? This PTU seems to have some heavy duty looking tapered rollers. The force is spread out through all of those rollers in the bearing, whereas the gears experience a much more concentrated force, distributed over about one tooth at a time.

i dont have a writ up, i basically drop the exhaust y-pipe. then i found a image on google where to drill a hole (google ford put drian install) look at the 2nd image. that is where i drill the hole. and install a pipe thread plug. once the plug is in i put in transmission oil, run it for 5 minutes then drain it, fill it again and run in again for 5 minutes, then brake clean it out and also put a air blow gun in the hole and try to put some pressure into to unplug the vent. then i install new gear oil. this makes it easy to service it regularly

Not related to this specific PTU, but i've got one for a 2010 MKS ecoboost. I recently got a trans fluid leak at the compression seal between the transmission and the PTU. Lincoln is telling me i need to swap out my current ptu and put in a new one all for this trans leak. I'm not having any performance issues at all with the PTU - it's just leaking. I prefer not to do that if I can just drop the PTU and put in a new compression seal. It would obviously save me a lot of money. What do you think i should do here?

The problem with my transfer is that it vibrates the vehicle cabin at a speed of 70 km to 110 km. Before it vibrated much more, the cardan support was replaced and almost the whole problem was solved, but there is still some vibration. When the transfer is cold, listen to the turn and the sound is transmitted to the driver's cabin just below the console, a turn as unbalanced. A test was performed by gently applying the handbrake while advancing and accelerating the vehicle smoothly, and the problem was that the sound increases in the transfer (the cardan has no problems). My question is: this problem is solved by repairing only the transfer using the reconstruction kit (bearings and seals I can get), will the bearings be the cause of the vibration transmitted to the cabin or will there be problems with the gears?

I just bought a 2013 ford police interceptor utility, and I'm wondering, does that vehicle have the same problem with the PTU overheating as well? As soon as I get the vehicle in my possession in going to do a normal oil change, but also planning on changing the PTU fluid. Just wondering what to expect.

Can you please explain where the ptu is located on the 2016 ford edge sport? I'm getting ready for a long road trip (1,800 miles each way) and took my edge to a shop to have the front and rear differential oil changed. I asked to also have the transfer case done but they told me this vehicle doesn't have a transfer case. They were only able to change the front and rear diff along with the engine oil but I am concerned with everything I've been reading about this ptu. I have no idea where it is located and wonder why the shop was not able to see it and drain it. Any information would be very helpful as I would like to have this fluid drained and replaced asap before my trip. Thank you!

Very interesting video and information. However, I'm a little confused as to how this all works. It seems this unit is driven from the right-front transaxle output shaft and is also used to provide power to the rear? How is the differential in the transaxle and the left-front half shaft related to the rest of this equation? I'm just curious and like to learn; thank you!

The right front axle slide through it to the transmission for power, this unit also splines direct tot he side of the trans for direct power they both tap off the internal diff inside the trans for power.

What am I️ supposed to do with my 2011 MKZ? Dealership says no way to change fluid, doing it myself risks voiding warranty. Just wait until it blows up and hope that’s before the warranty is up?

03 ford Escape 3.0 Automatic 161 k miles. 1. Very light growling sound Lft bearing definitly was bad all was fine for 1000k miles after lft bearing change. .2. Then growling noise started lightly at 40 to 55 mph. 3. So right bearing was replaced . Noise still there and getting louder . Transfer case fluiid was changed, silver paste came out, thats wear..3 . refilled with fresh spec fluid. Mechanic stethascoped bearing and t case ,, could not isolate . How to determine if T case .or ? Can we retorque axel to 215 to see if it changes noise pitch . Most bad TCases rattle, not growl. Bad internal TC bearing ? Whats your reccomended diagnostic process. Thanks .

I have a 2016 edge, have they made any advancements on these units compared to the 2011 edge, I had to vacuum the old oil out to change it, and am looking to do the same oil change in my 2016 to prevent failure

I have a noise that sounds like the RF wheel bearing is bad after I replaced my blown up ptu with a used unit. RF bearing replaced, noise still there. Will the vehicle drive with the front half shafts removed for diag purposes? That would tell me really quick depending on how the ptu is driven. Don't want to take the shafts out and find out it doesn't move.

@@davidhenri2722 true, that ford is the better of the three. Also true, these are not the only car companies in the world. Its not the 50's any way. Happy 5th gen explorer owner here. But I won't lie and say ford is better than Toyota.

@@abadran8174 For the most part I do agree. They do last longer but for return on investment that would be a discusion for another day. In regards to your explorer. They are fine trucks but if it has that 3.5 l V6. Keep an eye on your water pump. When they leak they flood the crankcase with coolant and destroys the motor. Some even resort to replacing the waterpump when getting up in mileage before they start to leak. Might have to google search it.

@@davidhenri2722 thanks Dave, yes I know it. I'm keeping an eye on that. However, they said that was a manufacturing defect that was fixed with the new batch of 2014. Mine is 15. Still am watching it, changing coolant every 10months, adding royal purple ice additive. Drilling and tapping my ptu and rear diff next week for a drain plug too. I think even for a return on investment Toyota would win this one. They not only last longer, but they also resell for more. They save you time as well. I'm losing time to prevent some catastrophic failures in my ford's various parts. Just so I don't lose a lot of time and money down the line in case of failure. And the explorer is one of the more reliable ford's after the f150.

Ford tech, I have an '09 edge and I went under the vehicle and the ptu looks a little wet and I sucked out what ever I could with a topside oil changer from the fill plug. I did it four times like every 4 months and half the amount came out each time.The gear oil came out black every time and replaced it with the required gear oil.I dont know if I should have the ptu replaced considering it has 193,000 miles on it or drill a hole in the bottom of it and put in a drain plug.I just bought the vehicle March of 2016 it runs great but I just dont want the ptu to fail while driving dont know what to do, do you have any advice?Thank you.

Had a gear oil leak (vent blew out on transaxel) on my 14 xlt explorer, dealership is telling me I need a whole new PTU which is $2k. Said it was transmission fluid (black fluid just like the gear oil on your hands!) Could I still just change the gear oil, or is the replacement of the PTU necessary?

@ohger1

I don't know about the redesign, but the early units do not have a drain plug, and there's precious little room to snake a vacuum line in the fill hole with which to suck out the old fluid. I think the best I could do was get about an inch off the top. All you can do is draw out what you can and top it back off. Do this at every oil change.
