Ford Ranger & Mazda BT50 Transmission Service

In this video I will service a Ford Ranger/Mazda BT50 6 speed transmission. Because of the thermostatic valve there is no flow to the transmission cooler until 90'C plus making a typical transmission flush very difficult. In this video I changed about 7.5 litres of fluid.

Just did this tonight. I can confirm using a vacuum pump to drain the oil before hand made this job so much less messier. I didn't even spill a drop from the pan as i was removing it. I noticed I only got out 5.7L of fluid including the fluid in the old filter. This confirms my suspicion mazda under filled it. I also had some larger chunks of metal in the box and filter and i took video evidence in case i should need it. I have yet to check the fluid and do a final top up, that's for tomorrow. Looking forward to a better shifting box. Thanks for your help on this.

@benkeddie6399
@benkeddie6399 3 месяца назад
One thing to note is that this doesn't drain all the oil. To completely drain the Trans as you know you also need to drain the torque converter which can be done if you have the correct flushing machine or you have a aftermarket trans cooler by removing the return line. Best to have a second person if removing the return line. Again a great video though.
@turbostyler
@turbostyler 3 месяца назад
@@benkeddie6399Even if you had an aftermarket trans cooler it wouldn't help you. The factory box has a thermostat valve that is temperature operated. It doesn't allow the trans fluid to circulate around the trans cooler until it hits a certain temp. If you removed that and put in a bypass valve then the procedure you mentioned would be correct in draining the entire fluid properly.

G'day Mr Killa Watt, I ordered a 'Wesfil Cooper' transmission filter kit and was surprised to see it came with a rubber gasket, not the metal gasket in your video. Would I need to use silicon as well or without at the same 11nm torque settings? Or should I reuse or re order a metal gasket? Many thanks👍
@killawattgarage

Definitely no silicon! The metal one can be reused but it's not a situation that I would want to reuse. The complete rubber one will be fine, and I would still aim for the 11Nm.

Excellent review! I have 77k on mine but after seeing this I really don't want to change the transmission fluid. I cannot believe Ford let such a poor design pass for the Ranger. No drain plug, no dipstick that extends to the engine compartment for periodic checks topped off with putting it where the mechanics hand has to contact the exhaust. And then, after all that the final insult is that the motor needs to be running when you check it as the exhaust gets red hot.
@killawattgarage
@killawattgarage 5 лет назад
It really is a terrible design. I believe the reason behind it is from a marketing perspective. That can say/advertise that the transmission never needs servicing and they provide no obvious service points. Through testing they probably get 95%+ of the transmissions to last beyond 5 or 6 years and then it's outside the warranty period. It provides no assurance to the buyer of the car later down the road. I strongly believe that servicing (fresh fluid and a new filter) will really help the transmission to last a long time. Thanks for the comment.

Thanks for the Vid. What i have done to aid the installation of the sump tray and new gasket is to make 25 -50mm dowels [ eg , bolts with heads cut off ] with a slot cut into the end so as to make them easy to screw out. By using studs like this you can align gasket and sump perfectly before lifting that final bit into position. Fit most of the bolts , remove studs , fit final bolts and all done

Hey mate, this video was brilliant! Great footage and really clear commentary and steps. I'll check through the comments section to see what others are saying, but my 2017 XLT Ranger has just developed a bit of slipping in the transmission. I tow a van (1200kg) and use the sport shift mode. I noticed the slipping on the weekend while towing up a long hill in 4th gear at 2500rpm. So, I'm getting Ford to look at it next week (2 years warranty remaining), but I'm reading/hearing that Ford possibly won't come to the party under warranty and that they regard the whole transmission as "sealed". So, I'm looking into whether I can do this myself or whether it's off to an automatic transmission service. I'll be keen to check out your other videos. Cheers!
@killawattgarage
@killawattgarage 3 года назад
Take it to Ford first and see what they say, first. A fluid change is a good thing and 'may' fix the problem but it's an easy point for them to not honour the warranty should they see fresh fluid.
@pimpinwilly

im having the same issue with my 2017 panger. in 4th gear towing a van usually uphill the tranny feels like its slipping at around 2500rpm. what was the outcome of yours?
@captainclavicle
@captainclavicle 2 года назад
@@pimpinwilly it ended up being a faulty exhaust gas temperature (EGT) sensor. It was reading incorrectly and the computer then pulled fuel out of the mix very briefly/intermittently. This is what made it feel and sound like the transmission was slipping. I had a terrible customer service experience with a Ford service centre here in Newcastle. Long story, but I ended up contacting Ford Customer Care and they were awesome. Amazingly, there is a dedicated Ranger team. When you phone the Customer Care number, it's one of the line options to select! One of the problems that led to the poor experience with the local Service Centre and then the battle to get it sorted, was that they couldn't replicate the issue in the workshop and that a faulty EGT sensor won't always produce a fault code. However, I specifically asked them if it could be the issue, but was told no. They were a bunch of douches about it, but that's another story. It turns out that faulty EGT sensors are known as an issue. Not necessarily a regular issue, but enough that when people are reporting the sort of things that we have, the EGT sensor should be looked into. Since the sensor was replaced, it's been running perfect. Sorry for the essay, but hope this helps. I might try to look up your contact info and give you a call to mention other things that might help when you go to get it looked at.

A flush is much better but beyond on the scope of most as it needs specific equipment especially and this transmission has a thermo valve that only allows full circulation once the oil reaches a high temp. Ford list a transmission service at 240,000km so a pan drop that gives about and 70-80% fluid change and with a new filter every 100,000km is in my opinion a really good compromise any ensures longevity.

Hello. I would like to ask for your opinion. Five months ago I send my ranger to a workshop for a major service. I did asked for atf fluid change as well. But I cannot feel any difference with the transmission performance while driving as it should be smoother than before service. Recently I watched this video and try to open the dipstick bolt cover to inspect whether the atf fluid has been changed or not but it is very hard to open the bolt like it is never been touched by anyone which make me feel curious that the workshop didn't change the fluid. Is it possible if the fluid has been changed 5 months ago yet the bolt is very tight to open and is it possible for me to inspect the fluid colour(if I manage to open the bolt cover ) so that I'm able to know whether the fluid has been changed before or not based on its red brownish colour? Thanks
@killawattgarage
@killawattgarage 4 года назад
Hi, typically you would not expect the transmission to be noticeably smoother so it would be hard to confirm that way. The cover over the dipstick is tricky to get to and should have been done up tight. If you are really suspicious you will have check the fluid but after 5 months I wouldn't expect it to look like new but it shouldn't be too dark. It's a tough one as there are plenty of shops that would take a short cut and not do the job you paid for but I would like to think that the majority would do the right thing. Cheers

An automatic transmission has Transmission Fluid while a manual transmission has Gearbox Oil. Transmission Fluid is red in colour and very thin while Gearbox Oil is brown and thick. Unfortunately sometimes people confuse what they say. I hope this helps you out. Thanks for the question. Cheers from Australia.

@killawattgarage
@killawattgarage 4 года назад
The factory suggest every 240,000km which is ridiculous. I would suggest before the 100,000km mark (this is when I did mine) and then every 60-80,000 after that. I do regular towing and at the 100,000km mark the fluid was darkened but not terrible. Not sure on the km's of yours to make a suggestion but hope the above helped. Cheers

@@glennvandenberg3912 With lots of towing an updated trans cooler would be a good idea. These transmission have a thermovalve in there that prevents fluid flow through the cooler when cold. Hey mate. This sounds very odd to me but I have just had my transmission serviced under warranty due to a slight shudder at initial acceleration. They advised me that the car may drive differently for a few days due to the gearbox 'learning'. Am I being fed rubbish or is this true haha.
@killawattgarage
@killawattgarage 4 года назад
Actually this is true. They have adaptive shift characteristics based on driving. If they cleared or updated the software the Transmission Control Module will have to 'relearn' your typical driving habits. I hope the shudder is gone! Stay on the dealer till your happy with it. Thanks for the question.
@simonnewman587
@simonnewman587 4 года назад
@@killawattgarage thanks mate. I will keep onto them. In my opinion at the moment the shudder has not resided at all. It is very minor but to me it feels like a centre bearing to me. I did my auto fluid (no filter) at 30,000km, it had plenty of junk on the magnet. Funny thing was previously the auto ran at 105-115 deg c on average, now it sits nicely at 92-98 deg c even with 2-3 ton towing behind it. Only thing different is the part fluid change...Maybe mazda from new did not fill it enough? Now at 53K still same lower operating temps.
