Major manufacturers have been outsourcing parts for decades But they also had in-house receiving inspection departments to verify that what was coming in the door met specs. Around 15-20 years ago, some companies got the idea to save money by forming trusted partnerships with their outside suppliers and eliminate their receiving inspection departments, deeming it redundant to inspect something already inspected by their supplier. In one company I was at, someone, somewhere came up with the stupid idea that if something went wrong with the supplied part it wasn't "our" problem, but the supplier's problem. What they failed to consider is that the consumer holds the end supplier as responsible and it's their reputation that takes the hit. It only takes one person at that supplier who is responsible for his production to pass a substandard load to wreak incredible havoc when "redundant" inspections aren't in place There was an "alphabet soup movement" saying being passed around that "you can't inspect quality in" and that by making it right you could eliminate a lot of "unnecessary", costly inspection. Unforeseen things happen and those QC costs look like chicken feed compared to recall expenses, warranty costs and loss of reputation.

This is the exact reason why I'd rather have a 4L V6 or a 5-5.6L V8 in a large heavy vehicle like an suv, those small turbocharged engines are fantastic in small cars because they can produce an amazing power to weight ratio but in something as big as an F150 or bronco you're just asking for trouble, especially if you do a lot of towing or off roading because those turbos do not like being under constant high load or being starved of oil for any reason no matter how sort the period of time is.
@allen_p
@allen_p 2 года назад
Drop that 4.0L V-6 they had in the old Rangers in that Bronco and look out. Same thing for the new Ranger. I don't want a 4 cyl Ranger and make it a real truck. Even though I'm not crazy about my Chevy Colorado I'll take that V-6 any day over the 4 banger. Ford is woke and can go broke.

Wouldn't matter if those bigger engines had crappy valves, too. Perhaps with better valves, these engines will last about 100k miles and THEN do the GDI/Turbo downward spiral dance instead of at 1600 miles. You're right though, it would be neat to have one of these with a 5.0 Coyote
@Dimeinurear
@Dimeinurear 2 года назад
Yeah they put so much strain on such a little engine it wears it out so damn fast. When I was looking to buy a new Honda Civic I was almost astonished to read that the SI had a smaller engine than the base model and I thought "what the hell?" and read that they stick a SMALLER engine, a 1.5L in the thing, make it GDI and shove a turbo on it. Meanwhile the base model has a naturally aspirated, traditionally injected 2.0L. Listening to Scotty all this time, I learned that I'll take the slightly slower engine that'll last 2-3x as long any day.

The GM motor mount issue in the late 60s was that the mount on the left side would break and when accelerating the engine would shift and pull the throttle cable tight causing uncontrolled acceleration. With the throttle wide open the power brakes didn’t have enough vacuum to function. The only way to stop the car was to turn the key to off. The fix was a 1/4” cable wrapped around the base of the motor mount..

@boboslickjohn1471

Chevy had a bell crank system of rods controlling the carbuerator until 1969, then it was replaced with a cable. The cable did not hang up but all the 68 and earlier bound up and the throttle was stuck, The GM fix was a new motor mount that would limit travel if the rubber section broke...only on the left side. I had a 68 Camaro and when the left motor mount was broke, under hard acceleration the locked throttle was frightening. I had a manual transmission so a tap on the clutch took the torque off the engine and the throttle unlocked. GM denied the problem until TSA made them fix the millions of cars affected. Before the GM fix was available I bolted a chain to one of the head bolts and bolted the other end of the chain to the subframe. That fix stopped the throttle lock , but motor mount replacement was as frequent as oil changes if you drove the vehicle hard

I only liked it because of the Nostalgia. I remember the engine had a deep buzz when it was at 3000 RPM & vibrated the interior. It smelled so good inside though, like fresh goldfish & foam from a furniture store. That was its new car smell. Scotty, the GM chain fix was because under hard acceleration the motor would lift up and jam the throttle in wide open causing a run away issue. The chain minimized motor lift. 2nd, if the car starts cold but hard to start when warm it's 99% the engine coolant temp sensor (ECTS) telling the ECM that the motor is cold thus giving more fuel, flooding the motor, washing the rings, diluting the oil and giving crap gas milage, and yes it's Fords fault as they are responsible for their subcontractors.

My dad bought a new '65 Chevrolet Impala SS, 283 w/2 speed PowerGlide Trans. There was a recall around 1969 with the motor mount mentioned here. The big safety issue was that if the mounts broke the motor would drop and the carburetor linkage would move into the full throttle position causing uncontrollable acceleration. I remember reading GMs solution and free fix: They were to put a cable under the engine suspending it from the motor mounts ! The dealer

You are wrong. I had a recall. Cable was placed through the engine side and through the frame side of the motor mount. Most motor mounts did not break unless used for drag racing like I was. The throttle was already to the floor. The cable kept the engine from twisting over putting bind in linkage if the mount broke. Motor would not drop. It would flop over when torqued and on deceleration would come back to original position. Breaking motor mounts happened on all makes.

I owned one of these Chevys and personally experienced what happens when they fail. I did a valve job on my '69 Chevy Caprice and left the chains off when I installed the heads. Bad move. Left motor mount broke on WOT and the engine jumped up to the right and hung the throttle linkage at WOT.... Not a great experience. Here's the info on why they installed those chains. "On December 4, 1971, General Motor (GM) announced it would recall over 6.68 million 1965-70 Chevrolets with defective engine mounts. The recall covered 1965-69 full-size Chevrolets, 1965-69 Chevy II’s and Novas, 1967-69 Camaros, and 1965-70 Chevrolet/GMC light trucks, all with V8 engines. (NHTSA Recall 71-0235, now 71V-235.) Engine mount breakage causes a self-perpetuating chain of events. When the left-side mount breaks, engine torque causes the engine to rise up, pulling open the accelerator linkage; this causes even more upward movement, and consequently more opening of the accelerator linkage, until the engine’s movement is stopped by the closed hood. Moreover, the engine’s upward movement pulls the power brake booster vacuum hose loose, thus greatly increasing the force needed to stop the car. Also, the automatic transmission “PRNDL” quadrant would shift itself over one position to the right (e.g., from D to L), affecting all gear positions; this meant that the car no longer had a Park position, and could be started in Reverse" Edit: BTW, I'm a service director at a Ford dealership. Ford has more issues with their products, across the board now more-so than anything I've ever seen in my more than 4 decades of being in the auto industry....

When I was maybe 19 I had an 87 cavalier bought new that was about 2 years old and the steering came down with morning sickness. I complained to a regional manager and he told me it was planned obsolescence. This was in maybe 1989. They did discount the repair though. At least he didn't give me the "we've never heard of that" line. Years later with the internet I learned what a widespread problem it was. The fix worked, I had that car for 15 years and 293K miles. Still ran like new but it was rusted out when I traded it.

Scotty, I know that there is a real stigma about the Prius being "mom's" car. I have had two and my fishing buddy has two. He has a 2009 with 200K miles and it still has 85% of the original power to the Hybrid battery. I had a 2010 and put 155K on it. Sold it and bought a 2017 Prius because of the upgraded suspension and electronics package. The 12 volt cranking battery was giving out and I purchased a new one from the dealer. It has an 84 month warranty (unheard of in the industry.) The Hybrid battery for the 2017's have a 10 year full replacement warranty. I have averaged 61.6 MPG on my 2017 and it has 63K on it right now. I just think that it is the car to buy, new or used. I did pick up the electrical warranty for the computers and screens. It was only 400 dollars in 2017. Toyota has been building the Prius since 2005. They know how to build a hybrid.

Industrial grade tape is used for alot of applications, it could be the correct solution for KIA. If you don't know, most of the glass walls on high rise towers around the world is using industrial grade tape to keep the glass plates in place. So if you don't believe KIA, then I suggest you don't walk near any glass walls.( A friend of mine parked next to such a wall and one glassplate fell down from around 18th floor and went straight through the car roof 🤣, this was in the capital of a Middle East Country). Keep up the good work. I love your channel Scotty.

Went to but one of these broncos, and the dealer wants well over $60,000. when the model i looked at was only $42,000 to build online. Cant believe people are paying these prices for these. That and the problems they are having changed my mind. Doubt the resale value will be good on these. Went with a new 4runner. At least i have better reliability and better resale value

My wife had a 2014 Murano and loved it. She decided to trade in for a 2022 model and considered a Rogue for better mileage. Talked her out of it, so she went with the 2022 Murano model. She's very happy with the Murano, likes the room and visibility. Is there that much of a difference between that and a Rogue?

Not really much of a difference if I recall they both use same motor ones just slightly bigger and better suspension. Save your money

That's another thing wrong with going all EV's, there won't be much of a used car market, and if there is, the people will be getting ripped off.

It’ll take about 15 to 20 years for used EVs to start coming on the market and even then the price will still be high

@@oheyitskayyyyyy If you choose to go for the Yukon, try to go for the 6.2 Liter if you can, the 5.3 Liter has had it share of issues when it comes to the Valve Lifters being stuck, just another sign that build quality from most of these Manufacturers are not up to par like it should be.

Do NOT "throw lithium batteries away" (@8:22) they need to be recycled responsibly, as they are toxic and it is the law. Most communities have a hazardous waste disposal site that will take them for free.
