Thank you my starting problem was confusing until i watched your video. Might i add when i wiggled the key up and down it was throwing up warning lights etc on the dashboard. Easy home fix thanks to this video thanks again.
Thanks for the info. It’s amazing what simple failure on every vehicle can make some people sell their vehicles. I had several ford vans and trucks in the late 80s. I went through several batteries, starters and 1 flywheel before I discovered that it was a cheap part at fault, the voltage regulator. On my 7.3 diesels the radiator was too small causing the engine to overheat and prematurely failing. I tried an auxiliary electric fan and even tried drive with the hood removed , no difference. I then installed an additional car rad in front of the stock rad and this solved the problem. I installed an electronic oven thermometer in the top rad hose to warn me with beeping when it hit set temperature. I must for towing. Back in the day, the Volkswagens had a braided copper wire that ran between the starter and solenoid that would corrode and the car would not start. I did a roadside repair with tinfoil Etc.
Thanks so much for this Mel. Great video. Fitted one of these yesterday. Quick easy job which has done the trick after numerous panel and ignition problems!
Well done.. Very common fault on a transit. Yes I always keep one in the van..as I am now on my third with this van.. also the dip switch and wiper storks.. Ho I have a set on the shelf as well.. You might also come across the wire for the egr valve rubs through on the pipes.. That's a hard one to find.. Cheers bud
Yep.. Get a sprinter then have bigger & more expensive problems.. I watched your other video's last night, (well I was bored) You have made this van the same design as you made the LDV...? I don't understand that.. But if that design worked for you then ok.. Cheers bud..
i think i have the same problem with my mk7 transit van, it might start first time - it might take 20 attempts, it turns over and once its started its absolutely spot on.
Hey Mel what a cracking time saving video for me! I new where everything was and how to undo every last clip , screw or catch start of job to finish in 10 mins! Thanks for taking the time to make and post it online ! Merry Christmas
I’ve got a mk7 transit and have had a couple before... I’ve never had that problem but I’m now definitely gonna get one because I feel that You’ve probably jinxed me 🤭😂😂cheers for sharing 👍
iv got a 2014/64 plate transit and im having this issue right now - iv replaced the starter motor, new battery and fuel filter and its still doing it - could take one attempt to start or 20 attempts but it IS turning over every time you try just not firing up/starting, im assuming this fucking little twat of a switch is the core of the problem?
Thanks for the tip! I might need that someday, though I currently have a Eurovan camper, I'll probably sell and replace it as the maintenance, which I hadn't thought of when I bought it on impulse, now, frankly, terrifies me.
My mates transit stopped nothing at the key .Garaged didn't know what prob was even changed ECU and reprogramed that alone was 600 second hand .Makes u wonder .For 7.00 quid first place to try .Thanks for showing bud 👍
Hey Mel. Watched this great video of yours and, as we have a 2009 MWB transit, followed your link to the UK supplier and less than a few days later a unit arrived, so it's in our glove compartment just in case (or if we come across another vanner in trouble whilst on our travels). Superb! Big love from Orkney. M&V
Nice one Mel 👍 had van on tick over while testing a water heater that needed above 13v. Just stopped and now ticks iver fine but won’t fire up, bought one of these just in case, worth it for the price! Will see if it works tomorrow lol
there was no info when i did mine this will help a lot of ford owners i changed mine because it used to cut out now and again when i knocked the key with my knee great vid pal
Hey Mel Excellent bit of advice there, didn't know anything about that ignition fault. Will certainly be putting one of them in my parts box. I have used TPUK on Ebay man times, always found them to be a good seller. (FYI they are out of stock of this part at the moment) On another note, incase you didn't already know the first panel you removed below the steering wheel. That's where the OBD11 reader plug is hidden. took me an age to find it, thanks to Google :-) keep up the good work, David
Hi Mel, my dad has the Ford SMAX and is experiencing some starting problems etc. I've noticed that with the key in the run position the slightest touch on the key will light up the dash on and off. Also when the car is running sometimes it will cut out without turning the key off and the lights would flash on and off as if you were just putting the key to ignition. My question is... is this just a simple case of the ignition switch or is it an issue with the barrel lock? Also would it be straight forward to change like in your transit video? Many thanks, Chris
G'day mate I'm from Australia thank you for your help appreciate it I think all these Ford transit vans have a case Alzheimer's. thanks for your help again cheers all the best. PS contact that mechanic again and get all the tips from him. He's a Ford Guru Ford transit van Guru cheers mate.
Hi Mels world..... :) .....got prob with my transit 2002 2.4 DI ,she'll fire up but cuts out within seconds...did yours actually fire up? or wouldnt start at all?...some suggested to change my crank sensor...just wondering what to do next, took the EGR off (discusting) cleaned & put back on !....have a great sunday...in Mels world....cheers for ur vids... :)
That was a lucky find!! I wouldn't have looked at that and would have been ripping out the crankshaft sensor lol.. I've always had a great service from Tpuk! :)
My 2011 Transit will start first time sometimes, other times the starter just spins without engaging and takes 4-5 attempts before it starts. Could this be the ignition switch or will it need a new starter motor?
Hello Sir, I have the same problem... If I move the key little up and down it starts after a few tries... So I'm going to change this switch. Thanks for the video . I subscribe now!!! Regards Rickard at Jhona from Sweden and the Philippines journey
That was a really good video sir, I hope that is the prob I have 👍🏼..... well 3 days later the part turned up took me 5 min to fit and guess what? It started first time so thank you for the vi saved me time and possibly money trying other things 👍🏼👍🏼
Hi Mel ; I've a 09 mondeo titanium diesel - starting got a little worse gradually over the last 2 weeks and now will only start with fresh battery. Its a keyless system - Can I use the same hack before I order. Appreciate the video - would really appreciate if you can let me know. Thanks Dude.
My 2002 2.4 has just done the same thing. Only I've noticed my immobiliser light is flashing rapidly when you turn on the ignition key. Do you think it could be this switch? Subscribed by the way 👍
Cheers for this Mel, that’s a handy bit of knowledge to know! 👍🏼 I’m currently having problems starting my van and my key fob is also struggling to work when I try to unlock it too. Do you think these problems could be connected? I’m currently charging my key on a toothbrush charger as I just watched your other video on that as well. 😂 Hopefully it works.
Mels, nice info. Im having the same problem but mine doesnt start at all it only grinds about 3-4 rotations and then stops, even when i tried to jump cable it it just wouldnt fire up, and yes it started about a week ago in the mornings. im in folkestone and i dont know what to do now, can you help out please ? thank you
@@BigVanSmallWorld I have start proble,s as well and change the ignition switch but the problem remains... start motor turns and actions som turns but brake back and stops... if lucky then keeps running and the motor starts.
Thanks for that Mel! Will be buying one to change asap! 👍 Hubby wants to know if you've had trouble with your central locking as ours is shot on a '12 plate! 🤪
Just ordered one, I don't even have a ford at the moment. But over the next few years probably will again. If the engine was turning over I doubt I would think of the ignition.
Hi Mel I have a old shape 2014 transit LWB van Its being paid for but I am in my final year thanks goodness.. Its not in regular use but its a stress starting it sometimes.. I thought it might be starter motor until I saw this cheap fix.. Beats going on the street under the van to change a starter motor that may cost me around £90- £100+. So how much is this little unit please..?
It’s less than £20 and well worth changing it here’s a link for you www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B087QJHSTP/ref=cm_sw_r_as_gl_api_gl_i_5K34EYPGTQ2M2M5X8D07?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&linkCode=ml2&tag=melsvanworld-21
@@BigVanSmallWorld Well I bought part for £26.. I am struggling to get my cowling off.. It maybe my screw driver but mine looks just like yours.. I can feel the screws, but cant seem to budge them I've managed to take out stereo remote.. But the black cowling is a cow to get loose.. I want to do this myself.. not retreat to a garage.. I've tried nearly an hour now still cant loosen screws.. I don't think they are easy.. I cannot even change wiper blades.. Just my honest opinion.. Not sure what fords would charge to do it.. I really hope it sorts my van out because Id like to do work in it and the last time I was up in East London I felt it was never going to start. Its been like it since over a year.. But van is on finance and paying £179.14 a month is not as easy as spending more with insurance n tax its £240 before fuel.. Also the lack of use it gets my battery is probably quiet flat.. but not after a 200 mile run from South Wales To East London.. I really considered getting a new starter motor and possibly new battery.. But I am due to sell it for a new van.. Its done next to no mileage 129000 and for a courier van that's nothing in 5 years and I bought it with 77,700.. Try with different type of screw driver, I know its not flat head type more a star shape, mine I was trying with is very pointy and is magnetized tip..
Hey you didn't say, "go anywhere, sleep anywhere.." C'mon Mel, stick to the script! (I'm not trying to start something, but it sounded like you were!) :D All kidding aside, it was nice timing running into that guy. Good of you to share this story, I bet it comes in handy for someone.
Looking at a transit right now, and seeking out problems.. thanks bud!! I've got two heads right now, lolol... Do i involve myself in business again and all the BS that comes with it, or do i do what my busker friends told me to do.. Hit the road Jack and don't you come back no more no more no more, hit the road Jack,,, LOL.. Ford is my first pick due to ready available parts.
Hi hit the road don’t look back and it you’re looking for a transit try getting transit trend they have all the extras including A/C good luck with whatever you decide to do 👍🤓👍
@@BigVanSmallWorld I travelled through many parts of Europe {Backpacking} for nearly two years, hottest place i been was Greece. I can see reason for an A.C there bud. Rolling out of my tent at 7am and into the ocean to cool down lol. Portugal would be my main destination with perhaps a trip down to Morocco via Spain. Pretty warn during the day, but can get damn cool at night. I've been looking at Ford Transit 260SWB, pretty cheap wagon, needs TLC like us all.. and converted to motorhome. The problem i'm finding is lack of space in lots of these self builds. It appears everyone opts for a massive double bed, eating up 60% of floor space. I was a blue collar for 16 years, I'll have no problem putting something together, although its not something I'm willing to spend thousands on. Scrap heap challenge is in mind. I'm thinking back lounge area with collapsible table to convert into a double bed. I like the thoughts of having a large enough sitting area where a few can sit around with a beer/dinner and i can do my work from. This is going to be another adventure bud ; } All depends on the news coming before this weekend... I could be heading back into work full time. If i do this self build, would make a good RU-vid Video .
Tao Te Ching Ching sounds like you have lived a good adventurous life long may it continue and definitely get your camera out if you do decide to do a build 👍🤓👍
@@BigVanSmallWorld After hours of research i believe the transit to get is the old smiley? Appears to be none in my country for sale, that's just typical! Found one with only 58,000 miles on the clock and guy showed his plate in pic's, so i ran it to find zero MOT and previous fails on rotten body work. I can handle that ; } In your experience, is there any problems you can foresee or know of with these work horses??
i bought a 2002 transit recently. thanks for the advice. I decided to park the van up for a bit and do a full brake job place a fair bitbof body work so plenty of banging and thumping. Now its finished and time to restart but it wont . It started 3 times and turned off after 5 seconds and now nothing. Found today that no fuel being delivered to the filter which i also changed. now i have read in the manual there is an inertia emergency switch which maybe activated. problem is its hidden above a panel in the top of glove box which i cant get out yet. any ideas.
There’s literally these tiny tabs inside the glove box you need to pull or push can’t remember which way but if you look you will see once you push them the glove box drops rite open so you can get to all the electrics and fuses 👍👍
Hi, I have a FORD Focus Mk2 van (DA3) 1.8 Flexifuel (92 KW/125 HKR Model lår: 2009 I have a problem with the town drive when I want to reduce speed from 4 to 2 and start my car off and I start to get a couple times started I start the key.
Mine just died it was -27C in northern Europe, the day before drove like a champ, next morning after heating it would not start only turn over not even cough, SO, I thought the fuel filter, changed that still nothing, Bleed it like mad, even the injectors, still wouldnt even try, Read the symptoms of the ignition switch on Fords, and mine seems to be very similiar, cant even hear the pump come on, Figured it had to be electrical, replaced fuses that were blown.Order the new ignition switch, hoping its it
Hi have you checked the brake light switch on top of the brake pedal all so the light cluster can sometimes get rusty where the main plug goes into the back I takit you have checked the bulbs and make sure there is no rust inside where they slot in good luck 👍🤓👍
That’s fantastic new I’m so glad it’s helped you really no need to send me anything just knowing it’s helping people is enough the best way to help me and others is to share this video oh and don’t forget to subscribe to my channel cheers 🍻 👍🤓👍
Hello guys , i have the same problem , i have a tranzit 2007 2.4 TDCI and i can not starting , you know how how is Calling to this "relay " from video or where I can buy one ! Thanks a lot
Nice one mate, I've just sussed it. I tried it a couple of months ago and it would not fit. Key slot was in the upright position.. Mine came from Automotive Ltd Woolwich, SE18, 5NX. I am in South London. Good video mate.
2019's CRAZIEST VIDEOS well done I think they are all turned that way when they test them unfortunately they don’t turn them back to the off position glad you got it sorted please fill free to share my video cheers 🍻🤓🤙
Hey it's a problem with the Ford car's. If you have it on the way. You can just remove te connector, And put your key in the on position. Then connect 2 points in the connector so your engine light will be on. Then take another cable from the + point of the connector. And find the point in the connector that starts the engine . Hold it till the engine starts. Remove it leve the other cable inside and you can drive
@@BigVanSmallWorld I reckon it's only a matter of time before Carlife Becomes more popular than Vanlife And people will be asking you to turn their car in to a campercar
Reminds me of my Kawasaki zzr1200. Started playing up not starting unless i waggled the key in the ignition switch. Bought aftermarket replacement still wouldn't start. Replaced plugs, leads, caps, pick up coil, ign coils, neutral switch, clutch lock out and bought 2nd hand ignition module. Still nothing, yet all voltages normal. Weeks later i looked at the old switch, it had a anti jump resistor fitted, that was missing on the replacement. So transferred it across and bike started.....WTF!!
