Ford Tech Tips: Active Grill Shutter System 

It’s great. You drive in -6*F against a 45mph wind at 65mph and overheat! 247*F. Such and awesome feature! .F At least they circle the problem. Suppose a drill bit a few dozen times through the plastic pile of dander should ensure it keeps COOLING the engine and intercooler can get air.

Mine are stuck closed causing the fan to kick in seconds after start up.....any ideas what I can do to get these to open when their supposed to, The error is showing as the grill shutters, just not sure how to solve it? Any ideas be great thanks I drive Ford focus Zetec S diesel 1.6 65 plate.

I just got the 2016 ford explorer limited edition. I noticed that engine coolant over temperature light do come on after some minutes the engine is turned on. The engine is excessively hot. I can see the radiator water boiling inside the container. The water eventually dries up. I noticed that the grill shutter is closed, not allowing the engine to breathe out. I had to open it and use something to keep it open. I noticed that the engine started cooling after doing that. I don’t know if I should keep the grill permanently open. I just pray my gasket is not burnt already . I am not convinced the grill stutter helps the vehicle better as one stands a risk of losing the engine should anything go wrong.

Why is my active grille shutter on my f150 closed the whole time even when im driving. But when i turn the truck off it opens. Is there something wrong with it? Will this cause any damage?

can you disable this by pulling the fuse or unpluging the motor or is it going to turn a light on?

Pretty dumb tbh, just got a 2017 explorer platinum that needs this part, I’ll just delete it. No harm if engine is cooler but def can harm if it malfunctions and overheats

2016 F250 king ranch 4x4 power stroke. I assume it does not have grill shudders. I wish it did my truck takes forever to warm up

Does the radiator fan run more with this system?, mine seems to run in 30 degree weather at start up and then off and on even up to operating temperature?

How do I know if the shutters are working or not do they close and open when you start your car to make sure they close I have a 2023 Ford explorer I haven't seen them shot yet does the temperature outside matter if thay shot

My grill shutters are making a clicking noise to open and then they quickly shut again. They are stuck in a mid turn position, is this something I can reset?

My grill louvers keep popping as if they aren't open all they way but they are what is causing this?

Something else to break! As a Ford guy all my life I can honestly say that new Fords are unreliable junk! All you have to do is read the forums about all the customers who have had to pay for ecoboost engine failures. I have a 2019 escape titanium with just over 70,000 miles on it and it’s the worst Ford I have ever owned. Constant random codes for camshaft position sensors, reference voltage, stereo communications, overheat condition when it is not overheating. Gets high air intake temperatures that then causes it to bog out with no power. Nothing wrong with the air intake sensor but the car is toasty under the hood yet the coolant temperature is normal. It’s probably these shutters staying closed in city traffic on a warm day. The positive battery cable terminal T-bolt sheared off and then you cannot get the bolt but instead you have to buy the complete cable just to get the bolt which is completely separate from the terminal. So Ford wants you to trash a perfectly good cable just to get the bolt. There is so much waste for profit. I got the bolt from a scrap yard as I refuse to accept this crap. The parts guy at the dealer told me that some new Ford’s now won’t even work with aftermarket bulbs. That you must go to the dealer for them. And another parts guy told me that to change out the headlight bulbs on a ford focus it’s 5 hours of labor. That’s several hundred dollars for bulbs. I’m done with Ford!!

I think this is just a stupid design specially for the A/C condenser that needs cooler air to help condensate the Freon in it and what is more stupid about this it is operated by an electrical motor just like the temperature blend door inside the dash so when that motor get stuck at closed position a customer will kiss his motor goodbye or will suffer the heat because his A/c will not work, it is an over $500 part plus the labor another 4 hrs to change it so if someone doesn’t have the money to replace it he is screwed, Just another scam to hurt the consumer, just like stupid design on 2010 f150 that ford want to change the whole A/C unit inside the dash because the Evaporator temperature sensor is bad and can’t be replaced separately, when will ford stop screwing the consumers pockets for their stupid designs.

This guy need to take some high-school physics classes if he actually thinks that a active grille is going to help to rock chips above 70mph.....

Not good whatsoever for turbo charged engines .literally blocks out the intercooler. Fords intercooler is already incredibly small. Everybody rips them out . Now those v8s would do well.

Stupid design. I deleted mine on my fusion. I would climb a mountain pass at 70 mph and make it about 1/2 mile before it would start over heating. So basically I had to drive over passes at 45 and under. Ford and their stupid ideas of over engineering everything. Firm believer in KISS.

It's a great system until it fails. My daughter's Explorer overheated because of a failure in the Active Shutter System. Caused a head gasket to fail. Luckily that was covered under warranty, but the ASS was $1400 to replace.

Take the dang things out of your vehicle. Takes 10 minutes.
