Auto companies tell us for decades that the most wear on an engine occurs during starting then someone gets the "brillant" idea to start adding a feature that shuts off the engine at every stoplight to eke out a tiny bit more fuel economy. Brilliant.

It is damage at start up after being parked for extended periods of time... The oil settles and drains off areas it would have a film of protection on.

That used to be the case, because of flat tappet lifters. That isn't the case anymore. Only if the engine has been stopped for hours, and oil has drained away from the friction surfaces.

There should be an option to disable it in the menu, just like traction control. I seriously dislike any feature that takes choice or preference away from the operator and/or owner!

I have a 1966 F250 and we have a 1983 F250, 1989 Cummins, and 1999 F350 in the family and that's it(Although the '83 is currently down and needs major work). That 5 year warranty doesn't mean much most people keep their trucks for 10+ years.

It absolutely does not save you "big". The savings is minuscule but just like vehicles made to burn E85, manufacturers get a credit for including this trash on their newest models. They're doing it for the credit, not because it will actually save you any notable amount of fuel.

Correct this is the "game" car manufacturers have to "PLAY" to stay in business. they can't just build a vehicle and sell it. They have to get approval (permission) from countless Gov. Regulatory Agencies before they can build a car and sell it. No matter how ridiculous it is. It's a different high torque fast starter. Hybrids have been using stop start like this for near 20 years and rarely have to replace them. I think it'll be ok. Plus, I just programmed my 18 F150 to not do that anymore :)

Aaah, all the same argument as the downsize engine arguments. Even though those little 1.0's keep camping along as they have been designed with being small and a turbo in mind! (Not the other way around, adding a turbo to an engine that's not designed for it). You guys really hate your wallets do you? :P

This is up there with the same tactic as Apple intentionally slowing down your phone every time you install a new update. Their aim is to wear out your engine fast to ensure you buy a new car every few years. It's all about making their bottom line as rosy as possible. Dealerships love it too.

I'm all about saving gas, but I want the engine to live as long as possible and I do not like that it drops out the oil pressure every time it auto stops. Watch in the video where he accelerates and puts load on the engine before oil pressure is up, how can doing that doing that 10 to 20 times along the commute not going to cause premature wear?

The engine is designed to hold oil in the top of the engine longer so there is still lubrication.

I own a 2015 with this feature. It save no noticeable amount of fuel and is quite annoying in stop and go traffic. The button should be permanent on or permanent off. That would solve everyone's issues. BTW, plugging in a trailer light tester disables your rear parking sensors, so that's not a great option.

I have never owned a vehicle with rear parking sensors, so if you know how to drive, you really don't need those rear parking sensors. they are just a convenient feature. I'll take that trade off of disabling a a very annoying feature that puts unnecessary wear and tear for a convenience feature.

Phillip, I too have a 2015, and I have permanently disabled the auto start-stop 'feature' on mine. What YOU need to do this is FORScan Lite www.forscan.org/home.html and this BT OBD Scan Tool www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006NZTZLQ/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1. Don't skimp on the Scan Tool. This one WILL work. Others may or may not. Using FORScan, you will be able to toggle the bits stored in the vehicles ECU that control many, many features... including the auto stop-start. This will permanently disable it for you. I have had mine disabled for more than a year now using FORScan, and I can attest that there is absolutely no effect on overall mileage. Once you start playing with FORScan, you'll find so many other cool things you can do with it like enabling 'bambi mode', disabling the horn chirp when locking doors with remote, even enabling remote window open-close using your stock Ford key fob!!! FORScan is pretty awesome! Now, I take you back to your regularly scheduled program of total retards making useless comments regarding your truck's backup sensors and your driving abilities...

I know some BMW dealers will offer to reprogram the button to default in the previous state at owners request. The reason they default in the ON position everytime you start your car is because otherwise it won't count when CAFE standards are concerned. But hey. I don't mind the extra procedure. Start car, buckle seatbelt, shut off engine stop/start, place into drive, release parking break. Now when you pull a GM and remove the OFF switch, well guess what. You aren't getting my business.

Ingenious solution. I had moved a switch under the hood but had to put it back in place when I took the Jeep to get serviced (warranty concerns). This works great and extends the four pin connector when I need to use it. Thank you!!

I like the option of turning the ignition to off if I want to. Came standard for years. Other ways to save fuel, go easy on acceleration and anticipate red lights.

engine stops and oil pressure goes to zero, then when you go the engine is under load before oil pressure has come back up. won't that cause excessive engine wear?

The auto stop and start is such a pain. So now we have to "trick" the system by making it appear a trailer is connected...and you get to see that message every time you drive. HATE this feature. Driving a company vehicle but I will never buy a vehicle with this on it. Government regulations imposing unwanted, worthless, and cumbersome processes.

But you also failed to mention that when having something plugged into the trailer light plug, you lose functions such as back up assist, blind spot detector and backup sensors. They should really have an option to manually turn it off under settings instead of having to push the button every single time.

They could also pop the auto start/stop switch out and jumper it so it automatically defaults to OFF instead of ON, when starting the vehicle. (you'd need to remove the jumper to turn the feature back on) Took me 5 minutes...and you have ALL trailering, back up and traffic assists still usable. 😎 2019 5.0 Lariat FX4 CrewCab 4x4

Plus with the trailer plugin it records how many miles of towing you do in your history. May not be good for resale later when you have 80000 miles and 60000 towing miles.

Ford informed me that you lose 3 of the 10 gears when a trailer is connected on the 2018s, so that means that while it's a nice idea, it's definitely not worth losing 3 gears to permanently disable the feature.

just a guess, but doesnt trailer mode also increase shift points, enrich mixture for cooler running, decrease oil condition monitoring hours, etc? pushing the button or tuning it out might be better

Great video! However, what you failed to mention was that when the trailer hitch is connected, your backup lines don't work anymore in conjunction with the camera . All you have is a camera view of the back of the truck. Those backup lines that project the path of your truck are really nice and you will miss them. As much as a pain in the neck that it is, I suggest you just press the button.

Appreciate this info. Just purchased a 2018 F150 and the auto on off is annoying and hazardous. I sometimes forget to turn it off. I have had the truck turn off while positioning in the suicide lane trying to merge into traffic and while backing into a parking space. It was curious to me the feature should not engage when the steering wheel is turned. In both cases mentioned the steering wheel was turned. I'll run some more tests on the feature operation whilst the steering wheel is turned and report to my dealer if needed. Will pick up the part as suggested regardless.

I dislike the Auto Start Stop feature. To me it represents a solution to a nonexistent problem. However, I could live with it better if its default setting was 'off'. I could see it would be handy in a traffic jam or in construction areas where lengthy delays might justify shutting off the engine.

Would be interesting to see if by having the tester plugged in, if the shift points would change in the truck as it 'thinks' it has a trailer, especially on the 10 speed box. Or is that in tow/haul mode only?

I sell for Jacky Jones Ford.. If I'm not mistaken it's automatically puts the transmission in tow/ haul mode when you hook up to trailer brake lights.. Im going to try this on my 16 F150 this week to verify that, and then hook it up on the 2018 I am trading for this week.

Will the trailer lite detector work across all Ford's with the tow package? 2018 Escape 2.0L AWD for example. Texas temps in summer hit hi 90's The,auto/stop-start works over time st stop lights/traffic. The feature is get in winter I do lije that . But summer it is not efficient. At least here in Central Texas

My only fear with auto stop start on Eco-boost is if your turbo or turbo's are hot and it needs oil circulating to cool them. Will the Propulsion Control Module take turbo temp into consideration or will it allow engine shutoff causing a heat soak which can burn your oil effectively reducing the engine oil life? And to all the nay sayers....engineers do account for excessive starter and battery use with this feature. It is also tested to ensure serviceability into the future.

There's a better way that doesn't cost anything. It involves unplugging the black module that controls two things: 1) trailer lights/signals, and 2) the auto-stop/start. The only caveat is to be sure to plug it back in if you're going to pull a trailer. In the F-150, this module is under the dash and just left of the steering column. There are three modules stacked vertically. The bottom one is the black one that you want to pull.

That's kind of funky! How does a "trailer connected" situation affect other vehicle parameters? I think just hit the button each time you start to disable it. I do that with traction control on my Mustang and after a few times it just becomes part of starting up the car. Not much different than adjusting the climate controls.

I’m not sure, i know the auto start/stop had problems with the 2015 and under models after awhile, but I’ve been told the 2016+ f150’s have a better time with them, the engines of the 2015+ are a lot cleaner anyways.

AKJeeper it's the same idea of a hybrid car engine starts and stops all the time. now I do realize hybrid set ups are way different my dad has a hybrid Lincoln mkz the engine doesn't even drive the car. the wheels have electric motors on them the engine just keeps the charge on the massive batteries. but so does the tesla.... so I see what your saying but ford's not dumb they know the strain on the starter and designed it for that reason. Fords testing vehicles way before anyone knows they learned alot of lessons over the years. and still #1 sell truck for 35 years.

Oh your good just explaining what most people don't see. My buddy who works at an after market shop bought one of these and he had analog gauges and computers connected to his truck and drove from nebraska to Florida and back on a family vacation to see how it acts and in my opinion these trucks are going to be a huge advancement in the future in fuel economy. Just hope I do not eat my words in 2-3 years when stuff starts to fall apart.... but my buddy is old school he bought the truck for his wife. He still drives a 1976 f250 with the 460 haha. So he's old school and he was impressed.

I've made a habit of hitting the off button on the auto stop/start in my '16 Focus EcoBoost. I love that little 1L 3cyl turbo! Will ford dealers do a reprogramming to smooth out the surging under acceleration? And also to tighten the shifts on the 6 speed auto? Covered under warranty?

Well, hopefully the auto start/stop logic on the switch can be reversed with computer programming. Wouldn't feel comfortable accelerating from engine off mode like you did due to low oil pressure. Wonder if this feature will cause main bearing failures down the road. Ford should just add an eco-mode for people that want the auto start/stop feature. Should be off in all other modes. GM did that with the AFM on the Corvette.

More uninformed internet crap. You insert the trailer plug and the computer goes into tow mode. Shift points change, fuel economy drops a bit, trailer sway control is enabled dropping the MPG a bit more. Backup camera does not function. Rear proximity sensors are disabled. Just jump it out as shown on multiple video's.

Pushing a button on the dash is no big deal in fact if you hate stop/start it so much, pushing that pesky horrible button on the dash will become a habit and you won’t even think about it after a while. Next thing you know folks will complain about having to use energy to crawl into their truck or car.

@@HugsBachThere's no need to put grease on the hitch ball! Use a one foot section of wax paper folded twice and place between ball and hitch when hooking up. Works perfectly and you don't have to deal with the greasy ball rubbing on your leg every time you're near it!

What about if you don’t have the tow package? Is there a Fuse to pull or can the dealer go into IDS and permanently disable from the ECU as in a simple off/on like it was programmed from the factory?

Start-stop on a fullsize pickup is just stupid. Ford going Euro again, like that ugly new Mustang. If you are buying a full-size pick-up, you likely don't give crap about MPG. Especially with gas at $2.?? a gallon. I'll keep my 2011 5.0 Lariat until it dies now. Ford just lost me.

Why would it disable your back camera? Have you ever towed wity a f150? Camera works while a trailer is connected

Yes, disabling auto start/stop in this manner will disable the back up alarm, but the camera will still work. If I have to chose between the two, I'll keep the back up alarm. This isn't a smart "mod". Plus it will allow road salt in your trailer connector.

I own a truck because I LIVE IN THE COUNTRY. If i VISIT the city it might be nice to have the feature ON, but since FORD has decided it SHALL NOT BE up to the driver to turn it off until they want it on (Instead it is shoved down their throat" every time they start the truck), I have chosen to defeat mine by bypassing the switch in the dash PERMANENTLY. My gas mileage hasn't suffered even 1/2 of a mile per gallon. It's a worthless "feel-good" feature. If I had experienced different results (actually saved gas), I would have tried to find a "latching" switch to replace the "momentary" one used by Ford.

When you plug in the trailer socket, it disables your backup camera and/or your backup sensors. I put in a separate toggle switch located near my right knee, which connects to the white and black wires of the disable switch. See other videos how to disable auto off on permanently.

I wish I'd have taken the time to notice start/stop (took it on a long test drive with very little stopping so start/stop wasn't even brought up) I would've bought a Ram probably. If I spent $53k on a truck I shouldn't have to do anything to it in order to not be annoyed by it. I wish I could return it.

I have that feature on my new 2020 F150. I don't mind it except when it is really hot outside and you need the ac on max. When the engine turns off the compressor also stops spinning so the air will get warmer quick.

Another issue in this feature is when you live in countries such as GCC where the temperature is between 104 to 122 for most of the year and people don't get out of the vehicle while waiting for someone or even for loading or offloading items and they need the AC to stay running for people setting in the vehicle... The disabling feature is must.

@@michaelmiddleton2427 - Certainly. AutoStop Eliminator sells two different items that make "off" the default setting for auto start/stop (instead of "on"). They have one version where you pull the dash trim off, unplug the start/stop button and then plug in a little pig-tail between the factory connector and the button. The other option is a dongle you just plug into your OBDII port. The OBDII port option is nice because it's easy to install and remove if you want. The pig-tail version is nice if you wanted to leave your OBDII port open for some other use like a tuner, code-scanner, data-logger, etc. They are both about 100 bucks (although if you search, you can find online coupon codes for 10% or 20% off). Personally I think it is a stupid design because if you know anything about mechanics you know that more than 50% of your engine wear begins with startups so Penny on the dollar that you're saving and fuel will not cover the cost of premature wear of constantly starting and stopping

The "gas saved" with this feature will be used going to get the parts when it the starter fails or the engine breaks. You will not save money with stop start.

I agree it begins with government mandated fuel economies, but excessive wear and tear on not only the engine, but the transmission too with fluids suspended to it. I like the dummy towing plug method best so I don't have to tear my instrument panel apart to disable that silly feature. There isn't any real appreciable savings with the start/ stop feature. At a four way stop, it takes 10 seconds before you move again. There's no savings. At a red light, hardly any there. Going to McDonalds, two minutes tops. It's a stupid engineering myth that there's any appreciable savings vs. wear and tear on the motor. And besides, hearing that stop/start feature really grinds my gears. Can't stand it!

Government regulations is the same reason why Farmers are buying more older equipment than the newer ones. Farmers don't have time for a shop to send someone out onto the field to try and fix it or have to get it towed out of the field and into a shop. And the effects are usually neglectable.

Auto Start/Stop uses a much more heavy duty starter and battery for the repeated starts.

please note the Heavy Duty Starter costs over $100 more than a standard starter when it does go bad. So much for saving money on gas. PAY ME NOW OR PAY ME LATER...I prefer to just buy the extra 3 gals of gas per year.
