2016 Ford Transit Connect XLT 2.5 L, 4 cylinder with about 80,000 miles would crank for a long time on cold start but eventually fire. It would sputter for a few minutes after leaving the driveway but then run just fine and fire up faster on warm start. Then one day it would crank but not start. OBD2 codes P0116 and P0128 popped up on scan. Led me to this video and replacing the Cylinder Head Temperature sensor did the trick. Fired up normally and runs much better. CHT sensor in the 2016 Transit is located in the same place as shown in this video. I used a 19 mm Klutch brand deep socket from Northern Tool (Item# 40645) which fit perfectly.

Thank you brother I've been wrapped up on a 2012 2.0 transit and water pump and thermostat change out in which all the blades had rusted away did thermostat 1st.and been chasing down overheating issues on it, till I had a gut feeling about the water pump when my customer brought it back. So I'm covering all bases, flushed heater core 2 time's and replacing the radiator and hose's also. So thanks for the information about the temp sensor. Jessie King

Great video! Very informative. I've had to replace the coolant temperature sensor / cylinder head temperature sensor 3 times in the last 8 years on my 2011 Ford Transit Connect XLT. Is that normal? Or could something else be causing it to fail?

Will that sensor keep my AC from cooling ? That’s the issue I’m having. AC cools intermitantly

The A/C in my 2010 Transit Connect would only work when the ambient atmospheric temperature was in the low 70s, or when I on an open highway. Stil, my A/C was not that cool. The engine temp gauge was showing very low to zero temperature. Once the check engine light came on, and it was showing a bad cylinder head temp. sensor, I changed the sensor, reset the check engine light and all was well again. She starts right wasy. I am getting an accurate temperature read on my gauge and the A/C is once again COLD. If it helps, Amazon sells a 9MM, 11" extra deep, socket. It is an exact fit at 19MM, and a lot longer at 11" than I needed. I bought it as none of my deep sockets would fit. Extra deep socket sets did not include a 19MM size. So, the Amazon socket was a deal. They sell the sockets as an identical pair, so now I can change cylinder head temperature sensors till the cows come home. These sockets were about $25.00 for the pair and got the job done.

My 2011 tc is showing it’s overheating when the engine is cold, will this be the same issue? Change the temp sensor?
@JaboTheMechanic

I would start with the temp sensor

@@JaboTheMechanicperfect. I think it is because my fans go on and the engine hasn’t even warm up. Plus, it dies on me when I start it. Something about this design ford did isn’t good overall. Coolant level good, oil is nice and brown. So that leaves the sensor. When replaced I’ll come back with the result. Thanks brotha.

In that hole where the sensor goes i seen some oil i think. is that normal or should i dry it out before installing the new sensor?

The Transit Connect has two Coolant Temp sensors- where does the other one go?

Will this also cause your van to turn off when ur stopped too?

This Transit connect has two coolant temperature sensors. One for the head (which is demonstrated in the video) and the other sensor I have no idea where it goes. Picked up the part from napa and is much shorter than the one appearing in this video. Can you tell me where it goes?

What year is your TC? Which engine do you have?

Ok same thing just happened to me. But when i changed it there was some coolant present, is that normal? BTW its running fine now
@williamlynch6079

Yes. The metal business end of the sensor lives in the coolant stream in the cylinder head. There will be a squirt of coolant if the engine is warm to hot. Your best bet is to change the sensor on a cold engine.

What kind of socket did you use ?
@williamlynch6079
@williamlynch6079 2 года назад
Jabo used a deep 20MM socket with some lube. I had no trouble using an EXTRA DEEP 19MM socket from Amazon.
@PapasProdigy

What size socket was it 19 or 20?
@williamlynch6079
@williamlynch6079 2 года назад
You need a 19MM EXTRA DEEP socket. In this video, Jabo used a larger 20MM socket and he said that he had to lube the end to get it on the sensor. You may also have some luck with an EXTRA DEEP 3/4" SAE socket as it is a tiny bit larger than a 19MM socket. if you have a thin wall 3/4", EXTRA DEEP tire lug nut wrench you may get lucky. Your best bet is to get the Amazon 19MM, 11" long, EXTRA DEEP sockets. They sell them as a pair for about $25.00. It beats checking with every auto parts store and flagging down the Snap-on truck!

I have a 2005 f150 4.2L. I've looked everywhere for an answer. Problem is that the gauge goes to hot after 20 minutes of driving. It does not actually over heat. Changed cylinder head temperature sensor, thermostat, instrument cluster. Has no leaks no air in coolant system. I'm not sure if this model has a coolant temperature sensor.

Do you have hot air when does it over heat

@@JaboTheMechanic I haven't checked recently but I know the heater core was clogged up. Had that unclogged and the gauge did seem to go longer without heating up. But the engine itself doesnt seem to be actually heating up

@@JaboTheMechanic my mechanic put an additional temperature gauge that's direct to the coolant and it never goes past 230. If it were clogged, wouldn't it really be over heating?

230 is pretty high
