Many thanks for this presentation - at last I now know the location of the seal between the g/box and rear axle! Whether I will have the nerve to tackle replacing the seal is another matter!! Up till now I've drained some oil from the g/box and used it to top up the rear transmission once every couple of months - not a nice job!!!
So my fordsons gearbox oil seems to be going into rear axle which is the opposite to what you said would happen is this still going to be that pto seal?
This is true. Does it hurt anything to run a major with this problem? I filled up the gearbox but it quickly went to the final drive compartment, so the final drive is overfull and the gearbox is underfull. In other words the oil leveled out between the two compartments.
Very common to leak from the higher gearbox to the rear axle, if its not too bad most people just transfer oil back to the gearbox every now and again.
