First few days of Dave's sabbatical is mostly building the new forecabin design. This is part of our 3 month refit rush to the water for our 1977 Rival 38 Centre Cockpit Ketch.
Two and a half years ago, when we bought Vida, she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel, and paraffin equipment as well as all the plumbing and electrics. We have composting toilets, are installing an electric motor and all electric cooking. We are fitting a huge solar array and probably a wind generator. We have replaced all the windows, removed all the headlining and more. We are replacing all the standing rigging with Dyneema synthetic rigging.
This is the biggest sustainability project of our lives as we prepare for a retirement when we want to cruise the world using zero fossil fuels on a very low budget.

if you using epoxy resin that has got cold the resin side can develop crystals. The recommended method to get the crystals to dissolve and get reabsorbed is a water bath on a stove or similar at 120 deg F/ 50 deg c stirring slowly . but do not use until crystals are fully absorbed or the resin will not cure properly. this can take hours! we use a light bulb (incandescent) in an old fridge or other insulate box to store epoxy. watching the slow progress , if you put the epoxy tubs in a large saucepan with warm water and try to stir to accelerate the process . cheers warren

Totally agree about how long it takes to fully go liquid. We haven't had any problems with resin not curing since we first tried coating some wood outside in winter.

I may be too little too late, but you probably need to make a box to hold the heat and resin inside.

Yup, planning to sort that into the forecabin. Meanwhile important quite happy to have a bit more heat in the cabin 😉

I'm enjoying your series... I guess the likelihood is very low, but, in a head on collision that creates a hole in your flotation chamber is there not a danger that bottles could escape? I think this is the reason Minis to IMOCA race boats use closed cell foam because the flotation function is not compromised if the hull is. Would a mesh/fishnet be a way to retain all the bottles if the unthinkable happens assuming the foam is too dirty for your ethos?

Thanks. Glad you are enjoying them. If we get a hole big enough for a bottle to escape we are in big trouble 🤣 Guess we should have a think about that.
