I edited this digital land acknowledgement from one created by Adrienne Wong of SpiderWebShow in Ontario for the Network of Ensemble Theatres, which was shared with permission.
Since our activities are shared digitally to the internet, let’s also take a moment to consider the legacy of colonization embedded within the technologies, structures, and ways of thinking we use every day. We are using equipment and high speed internet not available in many Indigenous communities. Even the technologies that are central to much of the art we create and the readings we share, leave significant carbon footprints, contributing to changing climates that disproportionately affect Indigenous peoples worldwide.
I invite you to join me in acknowledging all this as well as our shared responsibility: to make good of this time, and for each of us to consider our roles in reconciliation, decolonization, and allyship. Everyone can do something to help this good Earth. Our only home.
What is the history/herstory/ourstory of the land you reside on?
I am grateful for my home on traditional lands of the Chinook, Multnomah, Kathlamet, Clackamas, Cowlitz, Tualatin Kalapuya, Molalla, Warm Springs, Confederated Tribes of the Grand Rhonde and many other Tribes who made their homes along the Columbia River and on Wy'East. I acknowledge their trauma and that of the Japanese farmer who was interned during WW2 from my house's land, which is also part of my home's foundation.
I am also grateful for the Diné, Jicarilla Apache, Pueblo, Zuni, and other tribes who have and continue to steward the high dessert also known as Albuquerque Metro area, so well. My second home. The desert constantly reminds me of the importance and sacredness of water so I don't take Cascadia for granted.
