When you think about depth of field, it’s usually connected with background blur and that makes a lot of sense. In photography, we use background blur to make our subjects stand out from their backgrounds and give a sense of depth to images. But if your goal is just to create depth in your images, there is an alternative to background blur: foreground blur.
Foreground blur is always an option even when background blur is not. For example, when your subject is standing against a wall. As photographer Gavin Hoey shows in this video, understanding the basic photography principles behind foreground blur make the opportunities to use it pop up more often.
Gavin sets up three different studio portrait ideas, each creating foreground blur in a different way. First, Gavin shows how any wall can be used to create a depth of field effect simply by framing it into the foreground of your photos. Next, Gavin uses fabric in his foreground and finally, it’s a quick trip into the garden to fetch some twigs and branches. With a little bit of careful studio lighting with flash, Gavin turns some twigs into a stunning fine art foreground blur image.
Gavin Hoey is a freelance photographer, writer, and trainer of all things photographic. Gavin has a real passion for sharing his photography and Photoshop knowledge. In 2008, he started recording and uploading video tutorials to RU-vid. His work is regularly featured in photography magazines, websites, and videos.

Hi Gavin, I went to a dollar store and bought a few bundles of dried spikes and use it in occasions to shoot a model through the spikes 😀 the are around 1 inch wide at the thickest part but since I have many of them I can cover sufficient for a cool look, just like you use the twigs 😀

1/2000 shutter speed, is it because a slower speed like your cameras sync speed would let to much light in making the photo not as blurry? Or is it something else? Awesome video!!! Can’t wait to try this.
@GavinHoey
@GavinHoey Месяц назад
Yep, that's basically it. super wide apertures (like f/1.4) let in loads of ambient light which is recorded by the camera along with the flash and can cause issues such as image ghosting, colour shifts and exposure issues.

What is the reason why you don't use full frame, so that you can better achieve a shallow depth of field ? And then I just want to add that you make some really good and educational videos. They are a great inspiration for me, who is a bit new to portrait photography, even though I have many years behind the camera.

Hi Gavin, great video. Quick question, I am a complete novice and was wondering why that shutter speed?? Don't you usually have it set at 1/125 1/250 ??
@GavinHoey
@GavinHoey Месяц назад
It's all about the ambient light. Super wide apertures (like f/1.4) let in loads of ambient light which is recorded by the camera along with the flash and can cause issues such as image ghosting, colour shifts and exposure issues. HSS flash (High Speed Sync) allows me to exceed the standard shutter speed for flash (1/250th in this case) but to learn more I made a whole video about it ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mRF7ocz8K5E.html

Yes indeed. HSS was essential in this light for wide aperture flash photography.
@iAzeem

Just wondering why you used 1/2000 shutter speed ?
@GavinHoey

Because super wide apertures (like f/1.4) let in loads of ambient light which is recorded by the camera along with the flash and can cause issues such as image ghosting, colour shifts and exposure issues. Because super wide apertures (like f/1.4) let in loads of ambient light which is recorded by the camera along with the flash and can cause issues such as image ghosting, colour shifts and exposure issues.
