The backspin tomahawk serve is a great addition to your serving arsenal. It's not a hard one to learn, but it's one of the most uncommon serves I've come across. If you choose to adopt it into your game you'll be able to mix it with the topspin tomahawk serve which makes a great combo. It's very hard for an opponent to distinguish between the two serves.
Tips for the serve:
* Use the legs
* Use the shake hands grip
* Come down the back of the ball

You da man! I'm an intermediate player located in NY working on understanding serve theory and different ways to generate the same spin but disguise it. So far, I only have one ... maybe two serves where it's not obvious what I'm serving. Otherwise, my serves ... though spinny ... are pretty readable. I'd love to learn more about serve theory and setting yourself up. I see that you've already made two videos on that topic, so I'm grateful. Another great area I'd like to see you teach is looping from close to table v. mid distance v. far away from the table. How the mechanics change. For both forehand and backhand loop. And also, looping a ball with no spin v. one with topspin v. one with sidespin and one with under-spin. Basically, how the mechanics of a loop change based on what spin the ball has. I'm particularly interested in this one. Thank you! I hope to see you post some of my video recommendations. I'll be following your channel! I can tell you're an excellent player with tons of experience.

Hi Michael. Thanks for watching! I’m glad you’re liking the videos and finding value in them! I try to incorporate the strategy for when to do each serve and how to prepare for the 3rd ball in each video but the serve theory specific videos are probably some of my favorites. I’m actually in the process of putting together a more comprehensive course where I will go over the different types of loops and how to do and how to return each. But to give a brief summary for each question: Your first question: “Looping the ball from close to table v. mid distance v. far away” Looping the ball close to the table you’ll want to have a shorter stroke. The trajectory of your swing will be more forward toward the target and you’ll drive through the ball more. Looping the ball from far away from the table you’ll generally have a longer stroke add more lift to the stroke and hit it on the descent. This will change significantly depending on the pace of the ball. If the ball has a lot of energy then you won’t need to hit it on the decent and you can drive through it more. Mid distanced looping is the most common and I generally like to tell people to hit the ball at the peak of the bounce or slightly earlier and have a 45 degree racket angle. Your next question for “Looping a ball with no spin v. one with topspin v. one with sidespin and one with under-spin” Looping backspins you’ll want to be close to the table and lift with the legs. Start with the racket low and finish high. Looping topspins and no spin are very similar. You want to hit on the on top of the ball and give it lots of forward energy. Looping a sidespin ball you will want to counter the sidespin by opening up your wrist and finish either across your body or hook around the ball. Which way you go will depend on the type of sidespin coming at you. I like to think about trying to get perfect topspin on the ball so if a sidespin is breaking away from me on the FH then I would try to fade it to counter that sidespin. You'll see a lot of players try to re-hook a hooked loop which is also okay because it will give you better contact on the ball and if you aim it properly will give you more space for landing the shot. These concepts will be virtually identical for both FH and BH. I’ll have detailed videos available soon on all of this and will have to follow up with you when they get released. Hope this info helps in the meantime! Thanks again for watching!

@@TableTennisJunkie Very in-depth! I love when the science of table tennis is explained in such a percise fashion. I def learned a lot just by reading what you wrote. Generally, I play around 1800-1900, and I struggle with serve receive. Even if I can read a sidespin, I don't necessarily have enough understanding of how to counteract it to keep it as low as I want or place it where I want, so I get setup frequently and lose to players I should be beating (at least that's my opinion). But you made a great point. If you want to counteract sidespin, you need to contact the ball at its side. From now on, when I loop a sidespin serve, I'll try to hook it. Maybe that'll help me keep it on the table and give my open up more safety. I look forward to watching serve-receive videos from you. For 1800-1900 players such as myself, the serve-receive aspect of the game starts becoming, arguably, the most important aspect at my level (or at least one of the most important aspects). And so I think it's pivotal to understand how to properly place balls on receives if one who plays around my level wants to improve and eventually break the 2000 level. Thanks again for your informative reply and great vids!

I'm so glad you found the video helpful! This serve can be very effective with backspin especially because most players only serve it with topspin! Я так рада, что вы нашли это видео полезным! Эта подача может быть очень эффективной с обратным вращением, особенно потому, что большинство игроков подают его только с топспином!
