Such a great explanation of the pendulum serve. No detail is left unexplained. I was always reluctant to use this serve as I could never get my grip back fast enough to deal with the return.

Very good demonstration. However, I personally prefer to use two fingers instead of three to support the racket (using the thumb and index as a clamp right above the handle and at the base of the rubber on both sides), and I do it for two reasons. First, it allows more angles on the ball for more variances in the serve. You will also have a far better opportunity to strike the ball on either side of the racket. Second, it's slightly easier and faster getting your grip back after your serve. The only drawback is that you may have less control when you first begin to try it due to the index not being on the back-middle rubber for support. But the lack of control dwindles with time. Again, great video and introduction to the pendulum serve.
@DublinTableTennisClub
@DublinTableTennisClub 2 года назад
Yeah totally see and agree on your view. Two fingers for sure give more flexibility of wrist which then makes better choices for spin. I have found it that the average player struggles to manage it with two fingers so I insist to start with three until they get the hand of it.

Nice video and explanation brother, especially shakehand grip recovery. However most struggle with foot movements to get to recovery position after hand movement, that's the most difficult part of pendulum serve. Thanks 😊

nice tutorial thanks man, what i wonder is the aim where to play it thou ? when i play it naturally i tend to play it cross table like u do in the video most of the time too but the spin shoots the ball to the other side when it hits the opponents bat which should be kinda bad since it wont go off the table so easy then right? like if he just push he will most likely still hit the table right? so i wonder if it wouldnt be better to do this straight to the left of the table so it goes off easy ? (prob short so it cant be top-spinned too easy)
@DublinTableTennisClub
@DublinTableTennisClub 2 года назад
Yeah that’s a fair comment and on theory it would work, but in real life unfortunately it doesn’t do to the fact that most people are right handed. Meaning their forehand technique is “spinning” the same way as the serve is. So even a mediocre follow through technique would return it. It is highly not advised to do this spin short to a players FH short position. Because a simple smack would get the ball returned. More complex to say is that the racket of the player is on the same side as the spin is connected which means that it is easy returnable with the slightest correct movement. The only way it can be “smart” to serve left / down the line is if you see the opponent far away at the opposite corner so maybe you can catch them out :) Hope that helps!

Dude, I have a concern about the type of racket I should use. I am a beginner player (with a couple of Yeats of experience, though). I have estar racket and I am planning on buying a 5-star Stiga racket ($110 USD by the way. Would IT be a good investment? Would a 4 or 3-star be enough? Is 5 star bolt for pro competitions???
@DublinTableTennisClub
@DublinTableTennisClub Год назад
Yeah God no do not get a 5 star racket. If you have a coach or someone you train then a 3 star would be perfect. I sell them out all the time because they are perfect for the beginner level to learn and develop. 5 star racket would ONLY be possible if you have a coach that you train 2 times a week min. Then you could learn and develop in a nice correct manner. Without a coach you would gain so many bad habits as you're just trying to control the ball.

@DublinTableTennisClub
@DublinTableTennisClub 3 года назад
Yeah if you clip it and brush it just right at the far side of your rubber variation of spin. The ball will be slower in speed (if only used wrist action) but it’s easier to go to a person backhand / go off the table on that side. I should of also mentioned in the video it’s perfect against Left hand players as the ball spins away from them if placed on their Forehand position It’s a great variation where spin is more on the ball than speed. And to return that “better” than your standard spin serve is more skill required. So your opponent won’t see the that and give the same exact technique to return, but it won’t work. The ball will pop up in the air for you to attack or they will just hit it off the side of the table of lack of control of your spin :) It’s best used when you want to throw off your opponent and give them something different to deal with. A close game of 7-7 score is a good timing.

You are showing the wrong edge for more spin, it should be the edge closer to the table! It is very confusing to the viewers! Can you explain the logic behind it?
@DublinTableTennisClub
@DublinTableTennisClub 2 года назад
Yeah I should of been more specific on that matter :) If you hit the ball edge CLOSER to table then you will create as much spin as possible with momentum that could be anywhere on the table. Now if you hit the ball on edge AWAY from the table then you create "more" spin than you do momentum (Spin > Momentum). Which helps you to keep it low and short in height because of that. There is not much momentum created which helps to use against players who are aggressive to make them defend it and HELPS you to create a 3rd ball attack on it. It is important to know the difference between both and use them when needed to change things up. Especially when its a close game and you can do a very tactical move :) Hope that helps!!
