22:24 I KNEW that guy! The guy studying at the gas station was local Dallas actor Spencer Prokop. Spencer once told me that his audition mostly consisted of him and the director talking about their mutual love of Frank Miller's Batman comic "The Dark Knight Returns". Spencer would go on to do a lot of voiceover work for "Dragonball Z". He died of liver cancer, IIRC, a few years back. RIP, Spencer, you are still remembered.

I like the satirical news and commercial blurbs in between the action that acts as a break before returning to the streets of old Detroit. 1:02 "Robocop" actually had some real prophecy to it..Between 1995- 2002, the Automakers left Detroit and took more than 250,000 jobs, ( plus another 100,000 of business that depended on them-- stores, resturaunts, etc) the city went through an economic tailspin that they're STILL recovering from today. Gangsters moved into the deserted factories/warehouses ,crime rose to an all-time high, still a problem there now. ( But it's getting better)

Hella is right that they're showing criminals as way too crazy, people really aren't like that. The movie is a satire of the US (as a form of criticism) and so everything is super exaggerated: -The cops are way too violent (a criticism of cop brutality) -The politicians and businessmen are totally corrupt/evil and only care about money (like at the start when the guy died and they just kept going with their day) -The criminals act like they're not human, like animals (as criticism of how the media shows them) -The media/tv shows joke about EVERYTHING or treat things way too lightly, no matter how horrible ("hundreds died, now here are the commercials!") -Murphy has to keep working even after dying (as criticism of how people are overworked) Basically, the director was trying to say that the US is too violent (not just criminals, cops too, notice how the cops just shot Murphy without mercy?) and everything is a joke and money moves everything. And he super exaggerated all those aspects in the movie. Also, it's a bit of a joke (of the movie), that the most human person is the robot-man.

"How can they operate on this when it not success yet? That's actually a fun detail of the movie. Dick Jones runs the ED-209 project (the big walking robot). As he reveals later in the bathroom scene, he doesn't care if it worked or not, he just wanted to contract and sell something. Thus, it's riddled with flaws and bugs and malfunctions, because he doesn't care about the product. Compare this with the younger VP, Bob Norton, who, though he's a dick, cares about the quality of his product (Robocop) and creates a far more advanced an stable machine.

Artificial hearts had only been introduced a few years before "Robocop" was released. They were a marvel at the time and so they were still seen as high tech for the movie. What they don't show is that those early models needed to be plugged into external equipment to work. The first one actually used compressed air fed into the heart by a machine. Remeber seeing the stories about them in the early 80s. This movie had a lot of satire in it as well. The SUX car was satire of the big cars with terrible mileage and reliability in a time whennthe real gas crisis a few years before was still a fresh memory. Things were improving by the time "Robocop" came out, but desire for more fuel efficient cars was still strong but Detroit was trying to bring back the big gas guzzlers.

@Movie.Munchies The prevailing (means most common) opinion among Americans when this movie came out in the 80s was that it was OK if kids saw people being shot to pieces, as long as the people being shot were drug dealers or, sometimes, drug users (especially if the drug they were selling or using was cocaine). Movie & TV producers were actually paid by the government to include "anti drug" messages which, in practice, often tended to look like this movie (which, for the record, I love). It's a a complicated part of our nation's history with effects that are still being felt & discussed. Just some extra context & info about when the movie was made.

I was soooo happy to see this movie pop up for your recent reaction. Recently after watching your other reaction videos I would think "I wish they would do Robocop". Its my all time favorite, especially to see others reactions to various scenes. Two things I would like to mention... when Ameal recognizes Robocop at the gas station it was because just before Murphy was killed he said the same line to him "dead or alive your coming with me". Also, if Robocop was shot in the jaw/face it would not do anything except just damage the organic skin because there is only metal under it. They kept the skin to make people more comfortable around him, to help Robocops humanity have a connection to himself (help keep him sane), and also as an honor to the cop Murphy who died.

This movie is classic cyberpunk. The city is set in a dystopian future, the city is in chaos, the corporation (ocp) runs everything and is above the law OCP (bob) organised for officers to be placed in situations where they would be endangered and without backup in order to create the circumstances needed to get a subject for the robocop program, hence the news reporting all of the murdered police officers at the beginning, murphy happened to be the "lucky" one that "lived" just long enough for them to turn him into a cyborg/robocop.

To me this is the best movie ever made. It has everything, it's not just action and explosions, it's a drama, it has some funny scenes too, but it's the drama of Murphy recovering his humanity after the horrible things that happened to thing. Also there's a strong criticism of big corporations that corrupt everything and do whatever they want. The music is good, the special effects for its time were amazing. The villains are great, I mean they are horrible and I hate them, but that means the actors that played the villains are good actors, they make you forget they are actors, you believe they are disgusting criminals. Murphy is a good main character with a good story, and he's a nice guy, you root for him, you want him to recover his humanity, his identity, and have his revenge on the bad guys. To me the scene where he goes to the empty house is very sad and traumatic, it's so emotional, it was his family home and now it's empty and he finds a broken picture. During that scene the actor is amazing, he's inside that robot armor and with his face covered but he makes you know what he's thinking and you feel his emotions of rage, sadness, the loss of his family and his former life, I think that scene at the empty house is one of the best scenes in the movie.

Paul Verhoeven didn't want to direct this after reading the script. Then his wife read it and told him he was passing up the chance to direct a new take on Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein". He re-read it and realized she was right. After that he wasn't about to let anyone else direct it. I loved your reactions. Take care ladies.

To be fair, criminals who come from a place of poverty, suffering, and discrimination likely end up seeing crime as a way to have a false sense of power. Going from getting kicked while being down > kicking others. When distorted, they become careless criminals who find pleasure in things destructive that they see holding them back most of their lives. It doesn't excuse what they do, as they are still making the decision to do evil to others, but it does come from somewhere, thus may be able to find a solution for it.

They recently made a documentary on this film called Robodoc and it's AMAZING. It dives deep into how films are made. Lots of hard work went into making this film, soooo much movie magic. This film used nearly every special effects technique possible. Interesting fact is when the actor who plays Clarence is pushed, he slams into the counter top and breaks a rib, but he holds in the pain, spits the fake blood and says "Just give me my effin' phone call". The receptionist he hits on is actually his wife..and she thought it was hilarious! And the ending with the fall out the window looks so off due to the room being too small for the camera to move far enough away for the wide lens to get the right perspective, so the arms and legs became stretched. Due to the budget and time restraints they just had to leave it in.

Robocop is the Texted Book representation of the concept of "Ghost in The Machine" where the Human Brain/Mind is still alive/active and has a little bit of control over 40% of the robotic programing.

The director does a lot of satire films. He did Total Recall and Starship Troopers. If you watch all three films you will get his sense of humor. Robocop was my favorite movie as a kid. I had action figures and all sorts of stuff. Probably not the best for a kid, but it was the 80's.

If you want a more realistic portrayl of criminals, watch the wire. :) Also goodfellas on the mafia-side. Lewis identified the robot as murphy through his gun-playing-around-thingy on the shooting range. Glad you liked it :) you will get a bit more sensitized to the violence if you keep it up ;) and robocop is very violent.
