As Parliament debates the government's new Illegal Immigration Bill, caller Phil tells Ben Kentish that an increase in the UK's population means the NHS is being 'abused' and that British healthcare workers leaving the NHS reduced its 'quality'.

American here. Trust me. Protect the NHS at all costs!!!! I am only now able to afford the doctor at 32 years old and am very sick because of the years I couldn't go to the doctor. My mother had an injury in 2006 that she has never recovered from because she didn't have insurance when it happened and now she lives in constant pain. And her insurance won't cover her care. At one point her insurance had no cap on her out of pocket cost so if the insurance wouldn't cover it then she didn't get it. Please please please, don't end up like us here in the US. We lose 10s of thousands of people every year simply because they can't afford healthcare. If this caller actually knows these facts, he is actively calling for people to die. Privatization will lead to pointless deaths as it does here.

@@chrisj9700 you are talking about a hybrid system, not fully privatising the healthcare service. If some people can barely afford to put food on their tables, how can they afford private healthcare? It's not as simple as saying "well it worked for them so it will work for us". Oftentimes I find the people most opposed to the NHS being the ones who would benefit the most from it. I had my first experience of being in hospital at the age of 11 in 1969 and it was shocking. No room in the kids ward, spent a week on an adult ward with dementia patients and very very ill guys, one of whom did not make it (2 beds down). Totally inappropriate for a young child, no one battered an eyelid. I have had to use hospitals since - first a 3 year waiting list from injuring my shoulder to getting the operation required (17 years ago) then a 2 year wait for the second operation. Services for the working class in the UK has always been below par, but the public always has that stiff upper lip, has a nice cuppa and carries on. We have always deserved much better.

@@althepalno1164 I was in hospital in 1967 in the children's hospital - excellent care. A few years later, hit puberty, was on a men's ward - excellent care. I am not comparing my experience to yours, nor am I saying there weren't problems, for example horrendously long waiting times in "Out Patients" because consultants put their private work ahead of the NHS work. But my experience has been generally positive, esp. now that age and other issues are really coming home to roost all at the same time. However, this is my experience and I can't claim it is universal. I can't deny your experience, but you do seem to want to extrapolate from your experience to the whole NHS. I don't get the comment about service for the working class unless you are comparing it to Private health care? Remember, the NHS was not just for the "working class" and middle class people did and do use it. I have never seen any differentiation based on class or race or wealth in either the GP surgery or the hospitals I have been in. Yes, an individual nurse or the dreaded ward Sister or even more fearsome Matron might have been a pain, but I don't think the NHS itself treated or treats working class people any differently. Of course, the private system can throw every test and every bit of care at you, but you pay for it. My father in law needed some urgent treatment - at a time when the NHS was being encouraged to farm some cases out to private to save time. The private company was happy to get the money (while using NHS resources) but quickly dropped the case because it turned out F-I-L had raised blood pressure. So it went back to the NHS after all. Not better treatment, after all.

The sad thing is how under capitalism, the sentence "The NHS Costs the Taxpayer £220Bn a year" is seen as scary and a waste, yet the sentence "Health Insurance is a £220Bn market cap industry" would be met with excitement and applause, despite costing the public the same money. Ignoring the fact that private healthcare would cost a lot MORE than 220Bn and would leave out the poor and desperate.

@realhorrorshow8547
@realhorrorshow8547 Год назад
Which is why we have the small boats. People seem to forget that they are a very recent phenomenon, caused by our government closing down legal means of coming here. All this new bill will do is ensure that people arriving on the small boats will make no effort to claim asylum. They will disappear into the black economy. Then, with fewer people on it's records Braverman's Home Office will claim to have solved the problem. If that doesn't work, then they'll say that "Lefty lawyers" and the ECHR are stopping them, so the ECHR will have to go. Never mind that the ECHR says nothing about asylum law. (It's about fundamental stuff like the right to life, to a fair trial, to free and fair elections.) Phil will, no doubt, cheer as he votes for the introduction of a police state. If you are an asylum-seeker, unless you are coming from one of a list of four countries, there is no legal mechanism to enter the UK. You must enter illegally and then claim asylum. The "Illegal Migration Bill" currently before parliament sets out to close even this route. Henceforth, anyone entering the UK illegally will have no right to claim asylum. Will be detained, deported and banned from the UK for life. However, fear not, Tory donors will not be denied their cheap foreign labour. While the media are focussing on the small boats, the Home Office is being quietly lobbied to expand the list of "shortage occupations". All those EU citizens kicked out by brexit can be replaced. Many British people have since come to me for grammar and spelling guidance because they say I have a better command of their language... If I was starting over I certainly would not choose nursing as a profession. A newly qualified band 5 nurse's pay starts at £27k, which sounds OK, that is until you realise that on average they qualify with £50k worth of debt. When I trained, I earned a salary, and training was free. Admittedly, we spent more time on the wards working than student nurses do now, but I was debt free when I qualified.
