It makes no sense why his brother was not interviewed. You do a remarkable job debriefing. Smart, honest and an outstanding investigator. You would be a great asset to the NTSB, and the rest of us who count on experts in aviation. My brother is a commercial pilot with more than ten thousand hours. Our father and other brother were pilots as well. We enjoy watching your videos. It is especially helpful for other pilots.

As a former Navy pilot, I seem to recall that the FAA had a regulation about not flying below 500 feet over people/civilians; this applied to private pilots as well as military pilots. They violated that regulation.

It's 500 feet from people and property. So, on the deck, 500 feet across a field woukd be acceptable. However, livestock probably counts as well, so low flights are risky, especially with ADSB. Better off to stay up high. These clowns don't stand a chance.

It's like that here in the UK too. No closer than 500ft to any person, building, object, animal etc. I simply imagine everything on the ground as having a 500ft radius bubble around it, coloured red 😉 And don't fly into the bubble 😃

In one of my first flights as a student pilot the elevator controls did jam. My instructor took over and was able to keep control using the trim. We were able to return to the airport and he landed. When we touched down (a little hard), the jam popped free and the nose popped way up because we had to keep the yoke almost fully back just to keep level up to that point, using the trim for fine adjustments. He was prepared for that however and we only ballooned a little bit. Since the instructor was so calm and it was one of my first flights, I didn't realize how serious of a situation we were in. I learned a few weeks later that the mechanics looked over the plane completely and could not identify the cause of the issue. Never did use that particular 172 again.

Was it possible that an external control lock or a tiedown piece of rope restricted the elevator movement until the "a little hard" touch down occured making the possible piece fall free from the elevator. Yes I know that the 'standard' control lock on a Cessna is a pin woth an extended flag, through the control column in front of the pilot.

I live nearby, and have flown 172's in the area. The erratic downdrafts coming off those foothills are so severe that no local pilot would dream of flying low in the area. People will stay safely out east of the foothills or will circle out over the eastern plains until they gain enough altitude to clear the entire Continental Divide before they get near to the foothills. What you couldn't see from the video is that those foothills are only about 15 miles east of the Continental Divide itself, and the downdrafts in the region are erratic and powerful. They are the most dangerous aspect of flying around here.

When we were playing music back in the 80's, our good friends, members in the nearly famous 'Montana Band', died on the 4th of July in 1987 in a plane crash that killed the whole group plus the pilot, the agent, his girlfriend, and one member's child. They were buzzing a boat on Flathead Lake and failed to clear the trees. Google 'Montana Band plane crash Flathead Lake'. It still seems unbelievable to me all these years later. The TSA has harsh criminal penalties for flight schools and instructors would have even minor violations of training and recordkeeping requirements, yet they don't even get involved with non-USA pilots that are suspected of reckless and endangering flight activities? So well covered. I am actually a student pilot that flies out of Boulder CO and I flew N9049H a couple of times. One time I showed up for a morning flight and it was just not on the ramp. Sad it had to go this way, but yeah, I flew it on the exact same day (9/11/2022 I have a logbook entry) and it was completely fine, no elevator issues, no engine issues.

To be fair, just because an aircraft is fine one flight, doesn't mean it is airworthy the next: I've come back from lots of flights, and before I'm even out the door, the next crew is asking me how we "flew it in that condition!" Well it wasn't in "that condition" when we were flying it!

At 4:45 you mention low maneuverability with only the trim tab on the Cessna. Unless I'm mistaken, the trim tab would cause the entire elevator to move up or down due to aerodynamic forces. So that would still give you pitch control almost until the flare🤔. Great video as always

Theory: These guys had a friend or relative who they believed to be out boating on the lake that day. While out goofing around on a sunny-day flight, they decided to go find their friends boat and buzz it. They then mistook some other boat for their friends, but didnt realize this until after they buzzed it. Realizing that they'd just committed a massive error, they attempted to flee before anyone could get their tail number (too late) by climbing over the ridge at low altitude, they mustve then forgotten to shove the throttle in because they didnt make it. Thats the only scenario i can think of that makes any sense.

I lived two blocks from the Lantana, FL airport, which serviced small planes including small cargo planes. During the summer of 2001, we had a cargo plane buzz our building every evening around the same time--as I was getting home from work. The plane flew so low, we could see their silhouettes in the cockpit. We realized after Labor Day that the cargo plane had not buzzed us in a few days. Then came 9/11 and it turned out these same pilots were the guys who flew into the towers. They were training in that cargo plane. Small town, turns out my daughter babysat for the plane's owner's brother. Now you reveal this photo and the first thing that popped into my mind was that they are training to fly into ships. Could be cruise ships or military ships but that's my guess.

Problem is every kid who wants to be a pilot watches those movies and thinks they are Marverick, when the truth is, every single D-bag who thinks buzzing is cool is Goose. Take a look at monthly fatal GA crash statistics, and a couple of causes always top the list - Running out of gas (Basic Supidity), flying into clouds (VFR into IMC), controlled flight into terrain (CFIT) .....and "Buzzing". These idiots combined buzzing with CFIT. Two of the most deadly ways to kill yourself flying an airplane. It's a miracle they survived. A bad miracle, because they certainly earned the death penalty behaving like such jackasses - especially given their high number of flight hours. Hopefully their employers will catch wind of this and ground both of them.

Several years ago I rented a 172 from a local FBO that had recently undergone elevator trim cable replacement. The cable was routed improperly and slipped off a pulley jamming the cable in a nose up trim condition on takeoff. I was able to manhandle the yoke to keep from stalling the aircraft and land safely. The control forces caused by the trim tab made the elevator initially feel jammed. So elevator jam plausible? I have also heard of F.O. Jamming an elevator such as the Flight International leer jet crash in the mid 2000’s at PHF.

The pilots might be certain they know what they are doing and feel confident enough to hot dog around, but the people on the boats have no clue how skilled they are and are very likely to be extremely frightened by this. A friend was teaching unusual attitudes in his Citabria and the elevator jammed while in flight. A open end wrench left in the plane found its way to the tail and jammed the elevator in a nose up attitude. The instructor rolled the plane numerous times and pitched over the nose to lose altitude and prevent stalling. Only when they pulled back on the yoke instead of push did the wrench dislodge. It happens.

I was in the US Air Force in the 70’s and 80’s. We hosted some Egyptian “fighter” pilots training on F4-Es. They couldn’t fly those either. Completely undisciplined, couldn’t follow instructions had just terrible safety habits to the point our crews and maintenance workers wouldn’t work with them. So they were asked to leave

I've been a pilot for 40+ years, one day I'm sitting in my boat enjoying liquid refreshments. I hear the sound of a plane motor winding up, I look around and see this dark Pitt's Special heading right for me, the plane passed right over the top of me so low I could smell the exhaust, he was that close. I could have easily throw a can up into his path and probably taken out his prop. I was furious, it is jokers like this that do nothing for general aviation. If I could have gotten his N number I would have filed a complaint. These guys need to be held accountable. Don't get me wrong, I've been accused of being a frustrated attack pilot but I never would knowingly expose people to such risk. Any risk's I take are between me and the ground....

When I was a student pilot during a preflight check, I once found a small rock jammed between the clearance space of my left elevator and horizontal stabilizer, where they meet. It had jammed the elevator down completely. I removed it, thought "how in the f**k...", and carried on. I told my instructor about this rock that was "miraculously" positioned in this terrible spot. I asked if he put it there as a training lesson, and he said no. Regardless of how it got there (it certainly had to have been him), I still remember it to this day. DO YOUR PREFLIGHT! Also, didn't a veteran F-14 pilot die recently due to a yoke control lock still installed through take off? Crazy... sad. Preflights and checklists, every time.
