Edmond was a very low crime area back then. It was a working class, family oriented town. I still wouldn't get undressed or get in and out of the shower with the curtains open. Hell, I live out in the desert of Arizona, down a 2 mile very rough and washed out dirt road, almost 2 miles from my nearest neighbors and still close the curtains or keep the lights off when I'm undressing.

I live in one of those towns where tourism is so important that crime is kept out of the media. Everyone’s home is like a fortress for a reason. Anyone who peeps into any bedroom in my house will see a large, fit Rottweiler in protect mode. Just because the dog is lying down doesn’t mean it hasn’t seen you… 😐 you can take the car if you can find the keys, but you can’t get into the bedrooms. If you do, you will have made so much noise that you won’t get out. It is what is… You only need to be a victim once to ensure you’ll never be a victim again. 😐

My then husband and I lived in Edmond when this happened. At that time it was a town of about 35,000 population and a suburb of Oklahoma City. This murder was so shocking the entire town was on edge. The details released to the public were so bizarre in that Janet was forced to spend so much time with the murderer with Gary laying dead in the house. The trauma of being with this monster and having to convince him to let her live is unimaginable. This was not solved quickly due to it being random and we all lived in fear wondering if there was a murderer among us and if he would strike again. I remember the point when police were doubting Janet's story because the circumstances of the crime were all so strange. Poor woman had to live with her horrifying ordeal, a dead boyfriend and a police department whom, at one point, didn't believe she was telling the truth.

Besides the stories, watching this series really takes us back to a 1980s & 90s time capsule. We see those long gone items such as VHS players and tapes, flip and pay phones, floppy disk computers, America Online, mail jeeps and of course those 80s & 90s cars most which are now extinct except for those in collectors hands that were low mileage examples driven by elderly owners in states that don't salt the roads. Janet (who's name is supposedly a pseudonym) would be in her 60s now and I hope life has been good to her.

Years ago we lived in a garden apartment. There were complaints ftom other residents about a peeping tom. I did not experience it because we lived on the 2nd floor. Several of the men in the complex including my husband formed a vigilante group to try & apprehend him. After several weeks they were successful & apprehended him. Well to my husbands surprise the man was a nephew to my husbands Aunt through marriage. He knew him very well. They gave him a warning & let him go. BUT I shudder when this same man came to my apt. asking to use my phone. I allowed him in & I became uneasy when he looked around as though he was sizing up a situation. To make matters worse I was alone since my husband worked nights & I had two babys sleeping. He never used the phone & I may have spooked him by telling him my husband was due home any minute. Ironically weeks later we find out he was the peeping Tom. What a scare. My father always told me never to trust anyone. I have been through some very tight situations that warranted quick thinking on my part. My advice do not panic & always stay in control of the situation. and of course give credit to my guardian angel.

I cannot believe Roy Hazelwood in this episode. He states that "the perpetrator didn't resort to physical violence against Janet, he was merely trying to subdue her, he didn't beat her or use profanity against her." So Mr. Hazelwood, I guess you think it's okay then, the rape I mean, since the perp didn't use physical violence or profanity. He tried to knock her into unconsciousness, and tried to suffocate her, as well as forcing himself on her, but in your opinion he didn't resort to acts of physical violence? I've never been raped, but I'm pretty sure rape in itself is violent.

The profiler was speaking about the murderer’s mind set - not any normal law-abiding person’s mind set! He was being neutral about his assessment with no bias injected into it, because it was crucial to develop an accurate profile. Damn, you know nothing about leaving your logic out of a work that requires your being objective about your assessment. Don’t you know anything about being a consummate professional? How else would this profiler have been successful at predicting his behavior if he’d go into the case with all sorts of predisposed and biased thoughts. You’re just too used to seeing unprofessional journalism that’s all over the media that knows NOTHING about being professional about what they do; which means they need to stay neutral about their subject/story that’s to be reported to the public. You don’t see that anymore!

When I was little, my family went to visit my grandmother. My mother came into the room we were in to check on us, wearing only underwear & a bra. I guess she didn’t realize the window curtains were open (she’s a space cadet sometimes), but some dude saw her & that’s when sh!t got crazy... This dude had the nerve to come & knock on the front door, then ask my DAD if he can come in to see/get to my mom 👀 Of course, my dad ran him off. Like, wtf?! He was either incredibly bold, or drunk off his a$$. Going with the latter.

Something I find hard to understand about the US is why is it common to move around in front of a SEE-THROUGH window, at night, with lights on - often not CLOSING any curtains or blinds and also often KEEPING windows open, especially on lower/ground level dwellings? That is just WEIRD. It is asking for trouble. And this happened in the 80's but to this day, people in the US still have this odd behaviour.

I'm seeing a lot of comments who are mad at the profiler who mentioned the murderer hadn't resorted to physical violence to Janet despite her having been raped. People, this is not what he meant. He was referring to that fact that, while being raped, she wasn't harmed OTHER ways, such as: biting, cutting, beating, strangling, breaking bones, disfiguring, stabbing, etc. Rape is still violence. The profiler was pointing out that the murderer, interestingly, HADN'T harmed Janet BEYOND rape thought he'd just beaten and killed her boyfriend. A person who maims, rapes, and kills a victim is a different kind of psychological mindset compared to a person who only rapes. Is it any less of violence? No. Was it still horrendous and inhumane? Yes. The profiler was pointing out a strange behavior of comparison from the murderer to better track him down. Thats it.

He was totally obsessed w/ voyeurism that'd be defined as gaining sexual pleasure from watching others while naked or engaged in sexual intercourse or coitus. This is global phenomenon or ubiquitous in the world, & so there exist numerous strip theaters, brothels, peeping shows, etc., in most of capitalist countries including Japan. The FBI behavioral profilers are amazing & stupendous.
