Crime scene analyst and investigator Matthew Steiner examines more forensics investigations from movies and television. Are bodies found in freezers like the "Layla" scene from Goodfellas? Is the autopsy scene from Silence of the Lambs true to life? How much does NCIS actually get right?

I was helping to find some missing boaters. We finally located the last body, at this point the body had been in the water for roughly three days. The stink was unbelievable. The coroner shows up and starts taking deep breaths, while everyone else is trying and mostly failing to not vomit. After stuffing my stomach back in I asked her if she was literally the hardest person on the planet or did she know something about dealing with the ungodly smell. That's when I learned two things. First wa that yes she was indeed the hardest person on the planet and the second was nose blindness. Just take deep breaths until the smell goes away. If you want to die take a shot every time they say unsub during an episode of Criminal Minds.

Mike Appleget that makes sense! When I saw the movie I thought it was to be more accurate and I liked the grittiness, the reality of death smelling bad. On stab wounds, the height thing was an early forensics theory that got dropped after several cases disproved it, but it sounds so cool in dialogue. There is a rather over looked scene poking fun at its overuse in Tom Baker era Doctor Who episode 'Talons of Wang Chiang' where the coroner makes the comment about knowing the height by angle of the wound. Where Savage Warrior Leila just looks at him "But when aiming for the heart we were always taught to stab up under the breastbone." Which put her entry wound at the same angle as the much shorter murderer's.

Just for the record, on that Bones licking bones one, she was checking to make sure it WAS bone, not if it was human or not. This is a trick archaeologists use (at least getting a finger wet and then touching the material) rocks and some ceramic types will not stick to your tongue, while bones do. The show Bones is FRAUGHT with a lot of inaccuracies for sure, but this is something some archaeologists do, or at least joke about and Bones is in fact a forensic ARCHAEOLOGIST.
