Here’s why I never believed Haley’s pretense of being critical of Trump: she served as his ambassador to the UN, meaning her job was to be the literal mouthpiece for Trump administration policy to the rest of the world. And yet during her presidential campaign she never gave any explanation of why she was comfortable supporting everything Trump did then but thought he wasn’t a good leader now. Did she have disagreements at the time but didn’t voice them because she believed it was her job to be a mouthpiece for policies, not to question them? Was she fine with the policies then but has changed her mind? Was she fine with policies while she was ambassador, but not with later administration policies? Has she changed? Has Trump changed? Was refusing to acknowledge the election results a step too far? Was fomenting an insurrection a step too far? Did she think Trump was one sort of person and then realized he was someone worse? She never gave a reason why if you liked Trump or his policies, you should pick her instead, and she never gave a reason why if you didn’t like Trump or his policies, you should pick her instead. She wanted us to think she was better without being willing to say there was anything about Trump or his administration that needed improving. She seemed to be counting on Republicans preferring a well-spoken, maybe-not-cruel, younger woman, but only ever her even gesture at the “younger” part of that, and she seemed to steadfastly refuse calling Trump older or mean-spirited or inarticulate in the process.
