That was probably the most brutal test I've seen on this show. Hammering a blade into a railroad spike? There is no blade that's not going to be damaged after being subjected to that.

Next strength test I'm gonna take your blades and dip them in lava for 30min if the steel doesnt melt then you pass and remember it's what the lava does to your blade not what your blade does to the lava lmfao!!

Actually lava is about 70c off from being able to melt steel, and 200c for carbon steel. Shouldnt be to hard to pass that, the handles would be gone though.

You know, I cut the strength test slack usually, but this? This is beyond insane. Nobody is forging knives in a couple hours that can be literally hammered edge first into railroad spikes and not take some form of damage. The fact that none of them BROKE is impressive enough for me.

I know people like to take the mick about how tough the strength tests are but that’s the point, if everyone was meant to survive it then there wouldn’t be any way to differentiate them. The better blade will perform better but still likely be damaged

They need to save the Strength test for last. You cant penalize someone for having a dull blade when you just beat the blade with a hammer for 20 seconds

The point of the test is to see if the blade will survive harsh conditions and still stay sharp afterwards

Trixter8l I agree that is the point to remain sharp in rigorous conditions BUT I have watched many of these and I believe many tests push these knife beyond reasonable strength testing. Example railroad spike, bolt cut, seem excessive to me and focused more on getting ratings. Things like the coconut chop, bone chop, and metal gas can or battle stab all are more practical test that could simulate i world thing you could use these knives for. YOU WILL NEVER AND NO ONE HAS EVER NEEDED TO CUT A RAILROAD SPIKE WITH A KNIFE....

@@williamprice2631 Thank you I was going to say that yesterday but I didnt want an unnecessary rebuttal. Knives are meant to cut and stab. I think that when testing a regular blade, a sharpness test and kill test is enough. Save the Spikes and bones for Battle Axes.

I don’t know the name of the first judge, the one who always does the strength tests, but every time I watch one of these episodes I can’t stand him. He has such a sarcastic and negative tone. Doug (kill test guy) always has something positive to say about the weapons, even if they fail. He will always find the good in the weapons and I think that’s important. The first judge (strength test) has a way of acting that his negative “funny” comments can tear down the contestants. Idk I know this is a rant but I really can’t stand him and i hope I’m not alone 😂

I dont find the strength test reasonable by using the rail road nails I get it that they are testing the blade strength. Maybe they can just slam the knives on the rail road spike though

People need to remember that the reason why they do the strength test before the sharpness test or any other test is because theres no point in testing a weapon that would break at a moments notice. Also if a weapon is ok even after the strength test, then its a testament to how well it was forged in the first place. Again theres also the hazard that if they dont do the strength test first or second, the blade may fail and cause injury. You would rather have the blade fail in the strength test where its usually point in a safe direction rather than it fail during the sharpness test where the judges are fully swinging the blade around as they cut through things. Rather a broken blade on the ground as opposed to a broken blade with a part of it in someones body

Those spikes are iron. Soft when hammered in.. Rust adds a harder shell.. But a sledge can flatten them cold..

I get that they're testing the edge but that's insanely harsh testing. I cant think of a time I've tried to split a railroad spike with a knife in my day to day. Your show doesnt actually show us anything other than you've got judges who can bust up some knives.

The point is to simulate years of wear and tears on the blade the best they can. And you cant really say its all that unfair when there are people whos blades have come out of the strength test literally undamaged. It can be done, you just have to know how.

I really do like this show but this is the stuff that I don’t like. No one would ever do this to a knife, nor should they baton on a railroad spike. I know it makes it more dramatic, but this is like testing to see if a crowbar can cut a tomato... why? And if you tell me it is testing the heat treat or composition of the metal that’s utterly ridiculous.

I watched this episode. They eliminated the best smith first because of stupid reasons. The knive he made didn't look enough like a railroad spike. Really, that was the reason, he got kicked off the episode for transforming metal into a a different shape in order to make it more efficient for the task. They let so manny amateurs pass, they really shouldn't throw out promising people because of petty reasons like that. In other episodes, they test knives with so manny delaminations, they look like they're made from spaghetti, no F's given, but his knives don't look enough like railroadspikes, so that's where they draw the line? It doesn't make any sence. Btw: Both finalists screwed up in the end. one was a little less terrible than the other, so he had to be crowned champion,...

Executive Order: Judges take heed, many aficionados are dead-set against the asinine beating of precision edged cutting implements (knives) upon steel rods/girders/rocks or bricks as that will only serve to blunt/deform/warp/fold/buckle or splinter the edge...regardless of its construction or metallurgy. Kids, its a knife, meant for cutting/slicing/whittling wood, fruit, flesh, textiles and other organics, its not a chisel/hammer/axe/jemmy or crowbar nor will it _ever_ be! Always carry the right tools for the job! "Strength test" understood okay, then baton upon wood or bone, elements that a practical knife may encounter. So-called experts! You above all else should know better with your contemptible excursions! I feel like saying "please clear your desks and lockers then exit the testing facility leaving your I.D's at reception on the way out."

not this is the first time I'm seeing treating blades differently than others on purpose... this show is pathetic in my eyes cuz most of the time the testers decide who wins not their blade & hard work... shame...
