As always, your self-rated less than perfect work continues to inspire! Wish the birds that hang around my smithy were as pretty as the beggars that hang around yours!

I get all sorts of birds visiting for a handout. Some are very pretty but their routine / incessant chirping can get old quick. Glad you like this candle stick holder. Thanks.

The birds begging by my smithy are my chickens, so it all evens out. I just looked up from my anvil and saw them playing in the newly falling snow.

Good work, I dub it: YELLOW BILLED MAGPIE CANDLE HOLDER. The official candle holder of Taiwan. It eats wax, as if it were on fire!

Great name. The birds approve... Thanks.

Great project. I find your videos very pleasant to watch. No big noises, very peaceful. When I work, I work in slow motion because, I am retired and the last thing I need to do is turn my hobby into a business. I like your methodical approach to your work, patience is truly a virtue. Thanks for the video. BZ.

You make a great point - trying not to turn enjoyment into work. That's partly why I kept my setup very simple even after making this a job and doing it for so many years. Of course I try to get some stuff done in short order but I try to work quickly though never be in a rush, if that makes sense. Thanks.

Don't short Change yourself too much! Judging by your own comments you learned something and we out here watching definitely learned something thank you for sharing!

I'm always learning something. I've said it before and will say it again, doing these videos has made me a better blacksmith. I'd rarely try stuff like this and would just stick to my tool making if it wasn't for RU-vid. Of course I don't like this piece too well but it's taught me a simple lesson (which I'm sure to forget new time I do this and need to relearn). Thanks.

It's really good for an initial attempt, and I think someone could take this idea several different ways. The base could be worked into some sort of leaf shape, and I'm sure others would have different, interesting ideas. It might be easier to work this from a piece of square stock (if someone were going to make several of them), but when inspiration strikes, you have to use what you have on hand. You are a constant source of fantastic ideas; thank you for sharing.
@gstongs
@gstongs 4 года назад
The leaf idea is perfect. There are folks out there, maybe like yourself, who could take this to the next level and really make something interesting. I'll keep trying... Thanks.

Intresting to see how much use those "Simple tongs" you made are getting. I've got some suitable stock set aside, it'll be intresting to see if they are simple enough for a tyro like me.

A lot of folks have emailed me that they've had success with the "simple tong" method. Give it a try. Thanks.

Cool candle stick holder, those birds are not anything I have ever seen, love to see your birds in flight. I have a friend that takes pics with a high speed camera and the images of local birds in flight are fascinating. Thank you for all you do.

I thin it came out really nice! the base had a kinda leafy look without being a bad chunky mimic of a leaf, and the candle part and the handle part were both pretty graceful. I guess if you think it didn't come out great, then you could probably improve it, but I like it a lot. just realized that I'm drowning out hammering outside by listening to hammering inside-there's a crew next door fixing my neighbor's roof, which blew off in a typhoon in September.

I seem to enjoy making things from one piece. This didn't turn out great but it works. I think I should try something like a miner's candle holder. Thanks Sonny.

If I could fail at the same level as you, I'd be a MUCH better blacksmith! Very few of my ideas ever look like I wanted them to, as we are our own worst critics. This looks great and is far above my capabilities. Well done!

The birds made this video but they also drive me nuts at times with their incessant chirping for food. When I'm tapping away on my anvil they know to come... Candle stick holder is just OK. Thanks.

When living in Washington State, I would also feed the birds and although there were no "exotic" varieties, I did really enjoy seeing those hardy birds that spend all winter and don't migrate. Chick-a-dee's are my favorite... Thanks.

I dont really see anything to be improved, it works and looks good. If you really wanted to, without changing the shape of anything, you could of taken a chisel and hammered a leaf pattern in the base.
@gstongs
@gstongs 4 года назад
For sure the base already has a leaf-like quality to it and putting in some leaf veins / lines would improve the look. Good idea. Thanks.
