Using examples from Miles Davis's and Dizzy Gillespie's bands, I talk about what it's like to solo over "a tag" and actually solo over one for over 11 minutes on the piano. 1-6-2-5, 3-6-2-5, and other variations are such an integral part of the jazz vocabulary!

Thanks Amy. I still remember the first time an old tenor player kind of gave me a wink and went off for about 15 minutes, each turn around building on the one before it. As a bass player, it was a master class for me and I’ve been doing these ever since.

Pretty timely! EmmettCohen just did “all of you” and the bassist added extra tags and endless turnarounds. It became the inside joke of their improv.

OMG i love how hard and smoothly you swing, just fabulous
@coolseattledude

It is like you are playing on the rhythm, but your fingers are made of butter and they have to melt a little before the note registers. So you're always a little behind, sometimes further and sometimes less, and the sound is so smooth and awesome that I'm just dyin' ovah heah the entire time. Would SO much love to learn to play more like this, to me it is the very essence of the "feel" we all aspire to in jazz.

Before you go to a jam session, you must know two things inside out: blues en rhythm changes. The latter are most of the time a repetition of I vi ii V or the similar iii vi ii V. So when you add such a turnaround or vamp, everybody feels comfortable and plays his soul out.
@trevorm8415

Tasty tagin there'. In my head I was hearing opportunities to play "outside" on these changes, and then I thought, "I bet Aimee has already done a video on that" and... of course you have. Two!! Checking those out next. :-) Thanks for sharing your talents.

Monty Alexander used to do this thing all the time too. He’d fake out the ending of a tune on a deceptive cadence and then just rock out on a blues over the turnaround for like 3 more minutes. Love Monty!

Ha, one of my pet peeves. As a freelance musician you end up playing with many different levels of musicians on mostly restaurant gigs. So many lesser experienced musicians don't understand tag endings and are afraid of this type of vamp. The audience may not know jack about jazz, but can hear all the tension going on here. It's a beautiful thing. When I hear this happening, I'm always questioning what signal they're going to use to end the tune. My favorite tune to do this is a 3-6-2-5 vamp at the end of "There Is No Greater Love". Sadly, I have to threaten my band mates not to try to end the song until I give them an obvious signal. Then a classic Basie or Ellington ending. The crowd will often applaud after this extended vamp and ending. Thanks for another great video.

At the bar aceoss the street from me, when they played "April in Paris" they always stretched it. I'm not familiar with the original recordings, but I have a feeling that that's what pro players do whenever they play it.

The first jazz tune my teacher gave me was Have You Met Miss Jones in F. I have been fiddling with it for years. This video made me realize what Rodgers is doing in bars 3-6. My teacher said it was a good one to learn first because except for the F#dim7, the A section is all an F scale. You have made me see the tune in an all new way.

I'd never heard of a tag but it's certainly a recognizable sound and your extended improv was great and well thought out. It keeps you guessing when the tune is finally going to resolve. Thanks Aimee.

Also to add one more slight change to this, ...try substituting the 5 for 7 (half diminished) ...so instead of 2-5-3-6 ... 2-(7)-3-6.

Please explain: When is it correct, and when is it not correct, for a pianist to play a bass line when there is already a bass? I'm not trying to be critical; I'm just asking because I'm very confused about this
@AimeeNolte
@AimeeNolte 2 года назад
Most of the time I do not play a bass line when I have a bass player. It steps on their feet and gets in their way. But after playing for eight or nine minutes, I wanted to add some variety and punch to what I was doing. You can hear Oscar Peterson do that often in his playing. When he wants to give everything some punch, he drops into the bass frequencies. You just have to use your best judgment.
@jamesyorgan6249
@jamesyorgan6249 2 года назад
Don’t worry, the bass player will know when to get out of the way. As long as what your playing takes it in a different direction and is strong.
