To all those those people watching videos like this, big knives like these are much stronger with a Full width Tang than just a thin piece of metal going through the wooden handle.
Thanks for the comment archangel, this tang is 1/4” thick and 3/4” wide. It’s a hefty tang for sure. May not look like it in this short video, but you can see it in the long build video.
Just to let you know NEVER put rivets where the blade meets the handle that's the weakest part it'll snap if you use it for heavy duty things just an FYI for the future other than that I love how you made your knife very interesting
I just got a forge (small and kinda bad but good enough) and am looking to make my first knife. I don’t have an anvil but I do have a section of railroad track. Will that work?
Absolutely! That’s all I used for almost a year when I started. A big fancy anvil is great, but definitely not even close to necessary! I’d love to see your first knife when it’s done!
I enjoyed the build. It wasn't complicated and I dont think you meant it to be. What I really like was your demo of the knife, you showed its functional. You post your vids on a very open forum and I guess you have to expect when assholes make condescending and rude remarks. Comes with the territory. As a fellow craftsman I think your work is very good. You profile very well and your lines were on point. Keep the forge coals burning ⚔
Do the two pins holding the guard on cause a weak point on the knife? Seems like having almost 1/4 of the metal removed from the stovk would weaken it. Idk. Can you explain why or why not?
Resin Bowie(Jim's brother) is buried in Port Gibson, Mississippi. The big fight was a little further South of that near Natchez, MS. Supposedly it was Resin's knife. Jim borrowed it and the rest is history.👍😪
Despite not having a full tang, it's a beauty. Love the belly on it as well as design. Without the full tang, blade could fail behind the ricasso. Still, a nice knife. 👍🏼
Thanks! Forging the tang gets old after you’ve done a bunch of them honestly. It’s way more forging than necessary and takes so much longer to keep a consistent thickness as you draw it out. If it’s just for a project or no timeline associated, I do forge them, good upkeep practice for sure!
