If you want to get really good and fast at making knives, make a big batch at one time and repeat the same steps over and over again. Thanks to this batch of 200 knives Murray got rough forging of each kitchen knife down to about 60 seconds, and it is some of the most consistent forging he has ever done!

first heat 1: Heel 2: along bevel: Heel -> Tip (/tongs), tip->heel and back again 3: along back: tip -> tang and back 4: back -> bevel, zig zag pattern starting near tip 5: flip, flatten (tip to heel to tang, mid ~1/3 from back) second heat 1 along back: tip -> mid (2x) 2 along bevel: tip -> mid (2x) 3 along center: tip -> mid (1x) 4/5: repeat 2&1 (in that order i.e. bevel then back) 6 along bevel: tip -> mid and back 7 same but a bit further 8 along back: tip to mid (further yet, ~1in from heel/tang), then back along center 9 flip/flatten along center (2x)

For 76 seconds forge does it cost that much?

If you want to just buy that piece of metal off him then it'll just be the Hitachi steel price plus the 70 seconds of labour sure. If you want a knife that requires too many subsequent steps beyond this point then the price piles on. Maybe not 600 bucks much but that's something I would charge if I know how good I made it.

So you slightly re-shaped a piece of metal. Will take another few hours to make an actual knife.
