Truly, thank goodness for this video. I've watched years of smithing videos on youtube and always loved smithing, but never really liked how smithing seemed to require so much grinding and polishing to look decent. Yet here we have a finished, clean, crisp product right off the forge block. This guy's dedication(as you said) to precision through tooling has given me hope for creating a shop where I can smith and forge clean and trim product.

Always astonishing to see your amazing tooling. I also really liked the aesthetic simplicity of this particular item so I went out to my home forge to see how close I could come without a power hammer or any specialized tooling. It was a fun project and i was fairly happy with my results. I had to do makeshift bottom swage by slightly flaring a piece of water pipe and used a ball peen with it to make the bowl.

Pretty much the equivalent if using a stencle to paint or draw. Ever one keeps sucking him off like it requires skill to use power tools to guage what how much hammering you need to do. ANYONE can do this with these tools.
@killerkane1957

Very nice! Was the first spring swage the same one you use for your bottle openers? I use ballbearings under my powerhammer, but I weld them to the knuckle from an oilfield sucker rod with the threaded portion cut off. Then weld on a handle. Your nut-on-a-stick is a great idea!

I was waiting for the power hammer tooling on the bowl of the spoon. I wasn't disappointed. Very clever, I think most would have just welded a handle on the bearing, buy your arrangement seems to allow more room to move the spoon under the bearing and lets you direct the force where you want it.

@rigoniironworks
@rigoniironworks Год назад
Hi, it depends on the project/use. You can use wax, mineral oil, clear coat etc.. Wax gives a little protection. Apply when it gets rusty. For most tools I clean and put away dry. This goes a long way to keep from rusting.

@@rigoniironworks That makes perfect sense. Do you ever have to reapply the beeswax? Or does metal have 'pores' that the wax will penetrate.
