What's the purpose of the holes in the blade right at the contact chopping point, and why is the handle area so long?

What is the functional point of the holes? I would think it diminishes the strength of the blade for barely any weight lost. Is it just a style thing?

What is that blade type called? I have a short sword with a very similar design (no holes in the blade) and have always wanted to know what to call it.

What does the sand do? Is it a cooling method perhaps?
