I think you should leave the blackened look on the hammer and use a dremel tool to mirror polish the eyes and mouth so that it reflection looks like it's glowing! Or maybe an orange glowing enamel paint? Awesome project!

Though mass is mass, you could thin the cheecks 1st and push more mass out to the heads for a longer reach and wider face. Would also keep the cheecks from gaining so much height. Just a thought.
