Excellent example of a result of sticking to something that's going sideways! Appreciate your sharing your process, but the few times I've worked with wrought iron have convinced me to stick with known mild steel instead. Sadly, known mild steel doesn't etch like your new hammer!

I think you wouldn't have gotten as many delaminations if you added the flux later, if the borax is heated for too long it will stop acting like flux and instead it will act like slag, so you should bring it up to a orange or yellow temperature when you add the flux instead of adding it when its red or black

Hey, I’m a new subscriber and an aspiring blacksmith who is in the process of acquiring the necessary tools. Where do you get you 2” round 1045 from? Do you buy it online, or is there an alternative source that you get your metal from?
@OldHickoryForge
@OldHickoryForge 4 года назад
Dave G look into steel suppliers in your area. They’re more common than you’d think, but some don’t carry anything other than mild steel. Personally I buy it from a place called metal super market. I buy it in 20 foot lengths. If you want smaller quantities or to order online. Speedy metals is a good source

Awesome hammer John! I have a question....why do you not make eye punch and hot cut for your press? Seems like it would be much faster..
@OldHickoryForge
@OldHickoryForge 4 года назад
Anthony Strunk I have both of those. With the eye I was worried about splitting the iron so I wanted to keep it hot and go slow. As far as the hot cut. I just wanted to do it by hand

@OldHickoryForge
@OldHickoryForge 4 года назад
Anthony Strunk oh yeah it’s an awesome machine. The quick change die set up is great for a lot of what I do, with hammers I have to change dies very often. However with that you sacrifice rigidity to some degree, if you have to press at an odd angle it can cause the dies to slide. It’s not common but it does happen. All in all it’s an excellent machine.

Beautiful work. Now, why don't you get in the habit of wearing a face shield to protect your eyes from that flux? I see you've already caught on to "hearing protection" so you're halfway there. Hint: if you have 2 working eyes, you can enjoy the pretty metal better.

I admit, I held my breath through the entire quench, seeing that seam in the side of the peen made me really nervous. However... It made it through and turned out Really nice, the seam gives it a ton of character if I do say so myself ^.^ But personally I would have painted the face and peen with nail polish so as to keep the Tempering colors on the face and the peen when going into the acid. But that's just personal preference

Vincent Golden feel that way if you want to. When the Patreon was launched it was with the promise of quarterly giveaways. Also you seem to have a staunch mis conception of what you tubers make, example. With 22.7k subs at the time of this comment, I make maybe 50-75 dollars a month in ad revenue depending how active I am that month. My business costs between 2-3 thousand dollars a month to keep running. So yes, Patreon supporters are greatly appreciated and are fully deserving of the giveaway items.
