This is the full proces of me forging a mortise axe. These kind of axes are long and slender which enables them to work the inside of large mortises in big timbers for timber framing projects. This is a rather rare axe, at least here in Belgium, so I decided to make my own. And hopefully, one day in the near future, there will be some opportunities to put it to use.
The axe has a wrapped eye construction, meaning the eye is not punched. The eye is created by forging out the axe body, folding it and forgewelding it back onto itself. The eye was later drifted to shape using an axe-eye-drift. The iron body of the axe was then fitted with a steel forgewelded-on poll made from a jackhammer bit and a springsteel bit for the cutting edge.
