I'm combining layers of metal to forge this puukko style blade into a beautiful and functional tool. To purchase a knife like this: firecreekforge.com Blacksmith shirts and mugs: firecreekmercantile.etsy.com
Here I am saying I like your new format and it's actually the old format lol. This popped up on my suggested videos and I feel like I need to make one of these now.
Beautiful result. I used to thread the end of the tang and the end cap and tighten it up rather than clamp and rivet when I was making through tang knives.
Beautiful blade. I was already strongly considering a click of the good ol subscribe button, and then I heard what you had playing in the background. Praise God, brother. And keep movin' metal.
You're very welcome. As a believer and someone looking to get started forging, it is a blessing and joy to find like minded people out there makin' stuff and praisin' Jesus.
Great Video ! The knife looks awesome. It was nice to hear the Christian sermon in the back ground and some good old fashioned praise music from you. 👍👍
I agree God has given you an amazing talent for making beautiful nice and amazing talent for singing and it would be a shame not to nurture both talents
yet again your work is beautiful good sir, out of curiosity do you record projects you're making for customers? or do you just do it based on what would be fun to make?
Thank you! Some videos are pre ordered items, but more of the videos are projects that I think will add a good variety to the channel, and then I make them available for sale. Thanks for watching!
Well now you are on my radar right here in South Africa. I appreciate your craftsmanship and hope to emulate your work. Please tell me what wood and metal you used for the handle? Stunning work!
That's great! What part of South Africa? I've been to Joburg and up to Zim. The handle is brass/ carbon fiber, then mesquite and desert Ironwood. Thanks for watching!
Beautiful knife!! Can you tell me how to etch in detail? My 1095/15n20 doesn't come out dark black and white like your knife. I only use the ferric chloride..
I like to use a weak ferric chloride solution to etch several times until there is an easily distinguishable difference surface depth, then cleaning and soaking in strong coffee overnight will darken the carbon steel better.
This was a "zero atmosphere" weld, since I sealed it by arc welding around the billet. That keeps the oxygen out so no oxidation occurs, and the steel can weld easily.
You can make a laminate that is similar to Damascus (pattern welded ) steel using copper, however I have not personally done that, and the process is a bit different. Thanks for watching!
is it okay if I steal your design on this knife? was so heavenly impressed at how nice it turned out! do not think I will get it nearby as nice as yours but would love to try 😁
Just out of curiosity, was not another layer in there? In the beginning it look as though there were three types of metal and a fourth layer? In which case this wouldn’t be San Mai. Not hating because that is a beautiful piece.
The core/edge is 1095 High carbon steel, with a layer of pure nickel on each side, then a layers of Damascus (pattern welded steel) made of high carbon and 15N20
Your work is superb and meticulously executed. I really enjoy your well put together videos however I am not a fan of the religious interludes slipped in there. I fully appreciate it’s your video and your choice…I can of course turn down the volume and watch as it was the knife making I came for not the religion.
Thanks! yep, I know it's not historic Damascus steel, pattern welded steel has generally referred to as Damascus ever since Bill Moran introduced the aesthetics back into the custom knife world...
The hydraulic press (what I'm using here) is super helpful for reducing large sections of steel, but it has limited capability to forge a variety of shapes, planes without specific dies to affect that exact shape, where as a power hammer is inherently more versatile.
