thank you for making this by hand, i really like your ethos, it’s the smith that makes the tools, not the other way around. and as someone starting out smithing i appreciate you giving your time to help others, and show us that we can make the tools to make the things we want, what a lesson.

+Black Bear Forge yep I think so too! Some people forget including myself all too often that Smith of long ago did all this by hand. And a lot of times it is easier and more efficient by hand versus tooling up.

This video is a huge confidence boost for me personally as I’ve always felt swage blocks were rightfully expensive and not in my wheelhouse of skills. On a previous video I wrote a critical comment (and your reply gained my respect due to the way you “smithed” it) but this video and what you say during it is something many smiths would benefit from. The way you explain all of your tools have been collected/created over a decade, how beginning smiths shouldn’t be overwhelmed when they see a shop like yours and my favorite line: it’s the smith that makes the tool not the tools that make the smith. Outstanding video. I especially enjoyed the segue in the middle. Everyone looks at the smith; what power hammer do you have? Everyone looks at the photographer; what camera do you use? No one looks at the chef; what pots and pans do you have? I've been working on some items the last couple days. Takes me a fair enough of time to make it work out. I know if I had a nice big press or power hammer, it would take me minutes. But still, I bang them out because it's something I want to do.

I would love to make one of these, but I just don't think I have the stamina for that amount of heavy hammering. But I do have the access and the ability to machine one, so I think I will cheat a little and go that route. I have had to drop hammer weight down to about a pound and a half so I can hang on to the darn thing. I guess I will have to stay at the smaller project level. But I do enjoy hammering hot metal, even if I am making nothing in particular.

you should look into a ribbon burner ive heard they are far quieter than the forced air burners and still get to forge weld temps easily

Oh yea, a striker with a 8lb or larger would make things a bit easier but then you would have to make two of them,,lol. Or should I say two would have to be made if I was the striker........

Wow I've never seen anyone forge a swage block before great job on it btw! I was wondering is a 15mm thick piece of mild steel thick enough to forge one? Thanks Paddy

Yes 15mm would work although it would be a fairly shallow depression

As I watch I first thought was you were hammering it sideways. Eyes are getting old. As you progress to the smaller tools I see it is pounded on the flat side. Don’t own a forge yet but I enjoy your videos.
