the black "sooth" is called "forge scale" and a lot of smiths like to leave it on because its actually harder than the steel and also protects the steel from rust. smooth all the parts out and finish shaping with paper or files, then throw the pieces back into the forge until they're at least cherry red, take em out and wait till the color fades, test with water drops, once the water no longer immediately turns into steam, rub it down with a rag coated in lind seed oil. makes for a beautiful black finish .

10:02 I want to emphasize how much of a good thing this is. This isn't just a cop out either, medieval craftsmen were really not all that concerned with symmetry as we are now. I'm not much of a sword guy, but definitely an armor guy, and in armor we constantly see asymmetrical pieces of armor and pieces of the metal with quite a rough finish due to the construction, and these are seen even on the highest of end pieces out there made for kings and the nobility. Modern craftsmen strive to accomplish the elegant level of imperfection. Though I must say, that crossguard may be a bit too much on the odd end, but it really does give it character.

"But I've been told this well give it character." (Definition of 'character') It makes it look shit but you can't do much about it. But for the record the sword looks really cool.

Call me crazy, but...I actually LOVE the different imperfections. Especially since they're just cosmetic. It makes the sword feel so much more...living, and *real* than something made of of a stamped sheet of steel in a few hours.

Thing of beauty, that. I'd be proud to be the owner of that blade, blemishes and all.

Yeah I was wondering if I can apply the same logic into all my personal flaws and it would still sound cool...
