Competitive forging is a thing in some circles, but personally I like the kind of competition thats all about having fun while challenging your skills with your fellow blacksmiths. This video is a lightly edited look at the forging competition from the 2023 Rocky Mountain Blacksmithing conference.

This is such a cool idea, and probably an important skill to have. Feeling the piece with your hands is only one aspect of the problem, the other is keeping an accurate model of the piece in your head as you work and that seems like an invaluable skill.

Thanjs for showing the whole thing. I can fast-forward a heat, but have some gaps in my learning because people always edit that out. Seeing how you move and think and adjust flame during the heat helps me. Thanks for the vid!

great idea for a competition, i'm thinking its something you could probably do right on this channel, get some smiths, both pro like roy or some of the local viewers in the usa to send you an item, obviously limit the size etc and make sure its either in a box or wrapped up so you cant see it, or get your wife to put it in a box before you see it then see if you can make the said item

I think a blind competition would be a blast for any craftsman

My first conference was this year - at BAM - and they held two competitions: One for beginners and one for non-beginners. Beginners were given a 6" piece of 3/8" round and the challenge was to draw it out as far as possible - keeping it even thickness throughout (no tapers) - within 4 heats in a gas forge. Non-beginners were given the blind box challenge. Unlimited feeling time but only once - no checking back later. And they were given a time limit of 10 minutes in a gas forge. Each station was set up with all/any tools necessary for that project. I remember they started with flat bar but I'm not sure on the size. Maybe 1/4 "x 1" x 6"? They said this was the second year doing the blind box challenge and it went over so well the previous year that they brought it back. I competed as a beginner and got second place. But I was super curious about the blind box so I asked if I could feel as well even though I wasn't forging. They allowed it provided I didn't talk to anyone forging about it. I said almost the same thing you did - "I think it's just a shape, not an actual thing." To which I was corrected. It apparently WAS an actual thing. At which point I was completely baffled. Once everyone was done, the person who came up with the design did it from scratch just to prove that it could be done in under 10 minutes. Turns out, it was a driftless belt hook style bottle opener. It felt kind of like a flat padlock shape with a round top loop that didn't completely close and the top of the 'padlock' square had the thumbprint indent. Only one person noticed the hot cut was on their station and theirs was the closest.

We're any of the pieces functional items that would have been intentionally forged by any of the competitors previously? Or, were they all just various different skills that were jumbled together so that no one would have experience having made that item before? I thought it was a very creative idea!
@BlackBearForge
@BlackBearForge Год назад
Not at all functional. Just random collections of forged elements

Do you have plans available on that side draft hood. My blacksmith setup is similar to your competition setup and that hood would help a lot with smoke.
