Forging a larger die holder for an up coming project in the blacksmith shop. Forged from solid bar under the power hammer and then finished off in the milling machine. Hope you enjoy the video.
My name is Timothy Dyck. I got hooked on blacksmithing when I was 13 years old. I quickly realized that in order to keep blacksmithing I needed money to buy costly supplies, so I started making small items and selling them at the local farmer markets. The farmer markets turned into craft shows and craft shows turned into custom projects. Right out of high school I had the opportunity to apprentice under a blacksmith, where I worked with him for four years. We did projects for some of the most prestigious houses around the rocky mountains and were apart of many large public sculptures. I learned many valuable lessons while working under his training, but the desire to set up my own shop and go out on my own was always something I dreamed about.
So in 2013 I started setting up my full time blacksmith shop out of BC, Canada making custom projects and products like railings, gates, lights, stairs, fences and all the many blacksmithing tools required to keep the blacksmithing shop running. I love what I do and this is my dream job. I enjoy showing you what's going on in the blacksmith shop through the lens of a camera and would love to have you along for the ride as I live out my dream of being a blacksmith in the 21st century.

Totally in awe of your blacksmithing skills. The die holder should only have three screws, the centre one having a conical tip. If you notice, the die is split on one side; this is to accommodate the conical tip of the centre screw, its purpose is to open-up the die very slightly, allowing you to adjust the fit of the thread it produces. The outer two screws are ordinary set-screws, which act to hold the die in position.

the part out out of the truck is a cam shaft for the brakes.

Oh man, the joy of successfully removing a broken tap almost over shadows the completion of the job itself😆

The use of a 3-piece tap set reduces the risk of breaking to nearly zero. BTW...top job on this one.

A tip when you are threading. After making the hole in the mill switch to the tap, shift the mill to neutral and start on the thread by hand that will ensure you allways tap att the right angel. Same thing in the lathe, push the turning stud behind the thread die holder to always go straigth on the piece you threading. By the way i like your forging videos and will continue to watch. Excuse my bad english i am from sweden. Hope you understand.

Nice job on the die holder. You *do* have a metal lathe... which should be able to cut those threads. Another great project would be a tail-stock die holder - plans are readily available. That would be a pretty cool hybrid project - forge the rough shapes, the hex, and machine the smooth parts.

Both of my grandfathers were amateur blacksmiths. My mother's father was raised on a farm, and he learned to repair the equipment and shoe the horse(yes, they had a horse). My father's family owned a small apple orchard and he repaired the tools for the orchard.

Very nice new tool sometimes it's important to have a heavy duty tool I know with me I need a heavy duty tool because sometimes you just have no choice depending on what your working on it takes a lot of Torque stainless steel is a very good example for me or grade 8 bolts.

Just an idea. You are tooled up now and doing complex forging. How about doing something from the beginning the old way then redo it with your tooling to show the different levels and techniques?

With your power hammer, it's more easy to reduce a piece of steel. I maked same thing with my big hammer, and my elbow remember it! good tool! 👍

The start of this video was really upsetting LMAO love it watching you move metal like that just to watch the process you go through to move it around rather than this is a peace of stock bar blah blah blah if you know what I mean

At least the broken tap came out easy the last one I broke I had to take an old center punch and sharpen it a bunch of times and broke out the rest of the tap
