If the low pieces were stained red, you would have a sweet spiderman ring.

sounds like a good idea, just stain it red before you do the the final sanding of the raised parts, then only the low parts stay stained ;)

Hi, Before putting the ring in the acid, can you coat the internal surface of the ring with wax or some other substance which prevent itching on the internal surface of the ring... It will look absolutely stunning as you will get two different beautiful surfaces...

Yeah you can. You can coat it with nail polish which protects it and the acid won’t eat through. Most people use ferric chloride though for Damascus rather than this etchant used here.

Patrick, Big Fan. Amazing and inspiring videos. I'm thinking about getting involved in creating rings. When that time comes, I want to do this right and mostly as a hobby, I'd be starting with no equipment. I'm wondering if you would be interested in helping me get started? I need Equipment, which I would source from you. What I'm looking for is your know how, some advice along with choosing the right things so I can be very efficient. Thank you very much and looking forward to becoming a customer and respectable hobbyist. Sincerely Joey

I was thinking, would it be possible to dip it in a solid color resins or something to fill in the trenches? That way you have a layer of color too. If you could pull it off that would be awesome ring. It would look similar to stained glass in church’s with the colors and the boarders.

I absolutely love Damascus steel and the patterns and designs it makes, especially when you then etch it with acid. I just watched this video and the first thing I thought of was the Iron Spider suit or even Iron Man's armour with the lines and curves! I doubt there is any way to pull it off but if there is, I think you could make a killer ring. Red glow powder inside this steel and do the same steps, I wonder if the glow powder would show up inside the darker, flat edges allowing this to pop? I love the look, even has a Venom type look. Either way, this was yet another awesome ring. Keep up the great work!
@Vinwelder
@Vinwelder 5 лет назад
Unfortunately the part that they can't show you if where they get the real crazy patterns with. They can show how the twist pattern is made because everyone makes a version like that. But this company makes quite a few original patterns & to get those patterns they have to get pressed in many rediculas ways by using many custom made dies. This is also why the more intricate patterns can cost alot more because countless hours of work goes into making them. It's also pretty interesting to know that while the crazy new patterns are obviously modern real damascus steel has been around for a very long time as it's what all of the old samurai swords were made out of. Though that EXACT process is even more of a closely guarded secret as the best made swords were a very closely guarded secret. The swords were much stronger then anything else made and had thousands of layers folded on top of itself. This's also the reason the old samurai swords are worth so much money, some are even priceless. While some find their way into our countries most samurai swords are kept in the Japanese familes, though many were also taken during the war like the long lost Honjo Masamune katana. Anyone that isn't familiar with it should look up a documentary on it as it's extremely interesting. There should be plenty here on RU-vid. The sword is probably either somewhere here in America brought back from the war & the owner doesn't know what they have, or it's secretly in the hands of a very wealthy collector somewhere...

i wonder if you were to save all your cuttings from the lathe and melt all the different materials in a crucible, Just what kind of madness you could work with then. It would be tricky to do because different materials behave differently at different temperatures but you might be left with something cool.

Holy crap that looks amaizing! It has some Stargate: Atlantis vibe to it. What if you did a san mai of damascus? Like 2 sides being mainly lighter metals and middle mainly darker metals? Or more than 3 layers, it could make a cool effect if its made into a ring.
