Sometimes, all the chart success and even the backing of the biggest and most influential band in the world isn’t enough to create real, emotional wealth. The musicians we’re going to look at today were victims. They were victims of greedy, thieving managers. But, more importantly, they were victims of their own demons, self doubt and misplaced blame. They were a band who’d experienced the highest of highs in the late 60s and early 70s; signed by the Beatles’ own label, Apple Records, a string of top ten hits and a titanic standard Ballad that has been covered hundreds of times, Badfinger was on top of the rock world, even being called “The New Beatles.” But the business side of the music industry would constantly frustrate and chew the band up and spit them out, ending with one of the saddest endings in rock history. Pete Ham of Badfinger are subjectsnumber 7, next, on Forgotten Fretmasters.

I sold my upright piano to Tom Evans in the mid-seventies, I can't remember which year. Really nice bloke. I didn't know he had committed suicide. So sad. They were a terrific band.

How can you not know that Tom Evans committed suicide? You sold him a piano yet you failed to know this? Hummmm.... I first heard that Pete Hamm, then later Tom Evans committed suicide when listening to an interview with George Harrison. Harrison would say that he also suffered from depression but he would never ever take his own life. But of course Harrison ended up filthy rich and Pete Ham did not. Stan Polly is certainly a bastard and I hope he rots in hell.

From the opening chord, this song grabs you and holds on to the end. Impassioned guitar work throughout this song. Should have been in the top 10 of April-May 1972 instead of peaking at #14.

Nice to see Peter (Piggy to all his old Welsh friends) finally getting some recognition. he was a truly nice guy and his brother spent most of his life fighting legal battles to get Peter's surviving family the money that was embezzled/stolen from him. There's a plaque recognizing him at the front of Swansea train station. My band often played gigs with the old Iveys, Mickey the drummer died young in Orlando, we were in the army cadets together where played drums. Ron the original bass player is still doing the rounds and actively gigging.

Pete Ham wrote some of the most perfect pop songs ever. Go back and pick out all of his songs in the Badfinger catalogue and he rarely put a foot wrong: great melodies, great hooks, great singing and guitar playing and perfect arrangements.

I was in high school when Bad Finger hits came out and to this day Baby Blue is one of my top 10 favorite singles. Loved their music and sad they got treated so bad by a scumbag.

Finally Peter Ham getting the recognition he deserves! He truly was one of the greatest. He played the solo in Day After Day along with George Harrison. Check out Constitution or Timeless to get a taste of Peter Hams playing ability. He truly was a phenomenal guitarist and songwriter.

"Without You", IMO Pete's best song although there are several. Harry Nilsson took this song to number one on the charts, but I believe Pete Ham's version is the very best. Pete put so much feel into this song. It's as if you can hear his heart crying.

I knew the very sad story of Badfinger...I have all their albums and love them, especially Straight Up, Ass and Wish You Were Here. Such horrid treatment they received was shocking. I feel the Guitar Historian has done a sincere job in this you tube video.

Badfinger were an incredible band, and Pete Ham was truly one of the greats. Another band which had encountered bad luck was The Sweet, after singer Brian Connolly was beaten badly by some thugs in 1974. His voice and self-confidence were never the same, and their career slowly derailed. I would love to see you do a video on them, if possible.

It's my understanding that Brian was kicked in the throat in that fight, and it diminished his vocal range after he got better. The Sweet were so good.

It wasn't really bad luck. The popular music history is littered with managers ripping off acts. A few years ago, Leonard Cohen's manager stole all his money. Those managers had something in common.

This story always breaks my heart. I started listening to Badfinger in the mid-1980's when their music was almost impossible to find. I ended up finding their albums at used record swap meets. Thankfully, their music is easily accessible today on RU-vid and other mediums. I hope they will never be forgotten.

Indeed. In fact they might just be one of those rare bands which the word "underrated" actually applies. Often I'll see it said in the comments about people like rory Gallagher, but he sold 30 million records and anyone into music knows he's awesome. Badfinger? Many people won't even know the name. Some people nowadays may know the song "baby blue" after it featured in breaking bad tho. But they won't know who it is. In fact it sounds like a more modern record I feel. I think a lot of people hearing it on bb might think it's from the last couple decades.

UNDERRATED? Underrated my a$$. What planet are you from? In this universe Badfinger have always received accolades and praises, they topped the charts in the day and their songs continue to be played on radio and everywhere. They were respected by their peers, which included Todd Rundgren, Harry Nilsson, George Harrison, and more. GEORGE FU.CKING HARRISON! And that's underrated? What does it take to get to the top of your list, an act of God? I saw them live with Rod Stewart and the Faces, and Captain Beyond. i don't think there's a single adult in the civilized world who doesn't immediately recognize the iconic slide guitar intro to Day After day. Why do twits like yourself go around talking about this underrated one, and that underrated one, tossing that term around like a football as though they enjoy the drama of the word without grasping basic English? You insult the band and its legacy by doing so. If you're going to make comments however well intentioned at least try to make sense and not repeat words just because you heard someone else speak them.

Pete offered to buy me a pint once. I was only 15 but you could get away with it in those days. Anyway, even at that young age, the old man had instilled in me never to accept a drink if you can't buy one back! It's so good to know there's so many people out there loving Badfinger.

One of my all time favorite bands. Nice to see you give them the attention deserve. They truly are one of the great forgottens. Though it wasn't mentioned in this video, I think the 1977-1981 period where Evans and Molland re-connected to re-start their version of Badfinger together is important. It produced two albums both of which contained a handful of outstanding songs though neither album brought them any meaningful success. After these two albums Molland and Evans once again had a falling out. This part of the Badfinger history is important because it was another factor that lead to the eventual Evans suicide. Also, I don't believe it was mentioned that the song "Without You" was jointly written by Ham and Evans. Hence, future disputes over songwriting royalties entered the picture when apparently Molland, Gibbins and Bill Collins starting getting a piece of those royalties.

Paul was covered up in a legal mess of his own with the Beatles and Apple. Too busy breaking up over their own mismanagement post Brian Epstein. It's not like Paul didn't help them. He handed them "Come and Get It" on a silver platter. He was also lending support to Mary Hopkin, whose hit song "Goodbye" was pure Paul. Those were the days!

@@RARenfield I know, he gave a lot of musicians their first break, writing songs for them, giving them recording contracts, bringing them to public attention. I'm not knocking him, he's a good guy. I'm talking much later on when this band was in really, really bad financial shape. Just enough for them to tick over while they got back on their feet. I suppose it seems simple from an outsiders point of view many decades later but I guess it could have become very complicated and then, if you're helping someone out, at what point do you stop? I wish someone had had their back just enough to take the pressure off.

@@KayEl58 Tragic. Just tragic. The recording industry was practically a criminal enterprise. So many great writers/musicians lost out to bad contractual deals. 60 years on and Paul doesn't own the songs he wrote for the Beatles. I remember reading about how Ricky Nelson did so well because Ozzy (Nelson, not Osborne) negotiated his contract. The large print giveth and the small print taketh away.

@@RARenfield Yes, bad contracts are a common theme, it's just the little details that vary but the results are the same. Canned Heat's an interesting variation. They had a good manager and a good contract. Al Wilson writing most of the songs but the rest of the band sometimes contributing. Nevertheless, they all had equally shared writers royalties on all the songs. They could have made a fortune but the manager had to sell the rights to the record company in order to get some fast cash for bail money when they were arrested for cannabis possession. I think the amount was 10,000 dollars for their entire catalogue. Canned Heat is just one long list of tragedies.

I saw BadFinger in Akron on 1972 at the Rubber Bowl..they were a warm up band for Rod Stewart and Small Faces. They were as good as the original recording.

I agree, they were fantastic. There first album was a great comfort to me during my young teenage years after my dad told me to leave Home at 16. He was an alcoholic and I could do nothing right in his mind. I remember finding out about them. ❤️❤️❤️

Great episode! I remember having to buy out of print albums & bootlegs through Goldmine Magazine, including Badfingers. I saw them at Megan's Place in Scituate, Mass, 1989. They rocked the joint & then regaled a few of us back stage with tales of Apple Records & The Beatles as long as we kept buying the band beers. Joey Molland & Mike Gibbins were pretty cool cats that night!

The Ivy's as they were called to them becoming Badfinger were a phenomenal band. Peter Ham is so under rated and appreciated as a fantastic guitarist. He would pull such serene sounds from his SG and Les Paul guitars. His voice was so unique and one could feel and hear the pain and angst coming from his beautiful, melancholy music and singing. I was mesmerized from the first time when I heard them as Badfinger with Come and get it as I was with the Beatles when I first heard them in late 1962.

Excellent coverage, of one almighty band. always loved this band, I was a Beatles fan previous to this group, They did have a similar sound the fab four, maybe that's why I took to them, Some Band called Slade in 71 took my attention 100%. @@gbyxbee that’s funny. The Dodgers did have one great song,”Don’t Let me Be Wrong”. But then the Dodgers fired Tm Evans, ( bad decision). However Natural Gas had a much better album. The best version by far of Badfinger was Pete, Tom, Joey & Mike, period.

I knew very little about Badfinger and never paid much attention to their music, but your historical rundown on the band is very well-done. I appreciate the fact that you deliver so much information in a straightforward but still energetic enough way, with an expressive verbiage in the script, making the tragedy of the band's demise mournful as it should be. A lesson other bands and musicians might learn from, if they're savvy enough. Such a shame.

When the topic of bad contracts and bad managers comes up I always think of Badfinger and also Emitt Rhodes. Both Pete and Emitt were very gifted songwriters and musicians who never got the accolades they so very much deserved in the 1970's. There were just so many great singers and bands in the 70's that these two talented men were lost in the very crowded musical landscape at that time.

Badfinger was one of the most talented bands I've ever heard, both as song writers and as musicians. I can only imagine the incredible music they would have produced if they hadn't been screwed over by circumstances so many times (as well as being screwed over by the absolutely evil Stan Polley). Every time I hear this story it breaks my heart all over again. Those guys should have gotten so much more out of life than they were given.

I was thinking of Emitt Rhodes when bad contracts and managers were being discussed. His story is also very sad. There's a documentary about him titled "One Man Beatles" which was done a few years back.

It's a sin of a crime that the band who invented power-pop and came the closest to reinventing the Beatles sound without sounding derivative and gave the world great albums and singles & is rediscovered by new generations yearly: is still not elected to the Rock and roll Hall of Fame, that's where the Badfinger story should end, and that's where they belong, an honor & long-overdue recognition they deserve way more than corporate trash-pop like Abba or Madonna.... BADFINGER FOREVER!!

@@davidcollin1436 By the way, here’s how Bloomberg reports that Badfinger royalties are being split: The group’s main songwriter or his estate - typically Ham - receives 32 percent of royalties for publishing and 25 percent of songwriting monies for songs released under the Badfinger name, while the other members (including Molland) and the group’s original manager share the rest. Album shares, Bloomberg said, were split evenly at 20 percent for each member and Bill Collins, the manager.

@davidcollin there are two types of royalties. The royalties the band members get as recording artists and the royalties that the song writers get for writing the songs. Typically band members split up the recording royalties because they are a band and all play on the records. As far as songwriter royalties, every band sets them up however they feel is fair. Sometimes the songwriter will keep all of the songwriting royalties and sometimes they will give a small percentage to their band members. In Badfinger the songwriter received a vast majority of the songwriting royalties. meaning Pete Ham or his estate has made the most money because Pete wrote “No matter What”, Day After Day’ And “Baby Blue”. All hits. Tom Evans or his estate has made the second most because Tom co-wrote “Without You” with Pete Ham. Joey Molland receives songwriter royalties for the songs he wrote (about 35% or more) of all Badfinger songs from the No Dice Album through the Wish You Were Here album. Mike Gibbins wrote the least amount of songs so he received the least amount of songwriter royalties. Do some research and find out what songwriter royalties were received by each member when Maria Carey had a huge hit with “Without You”. I think that might help you understand the breakdown and how wrong your assertions are.

I absolutely love there music. When I first heard this tragic story about the band, It really moved me. I think of the band tool’s song. ticks and leeches. From the album lateralus. It’s an ugly business. Especially for the musicians of that era. I wish there could be some type of redemption for the forgotten. Maybe there is. Maybe just enjoying the music that was made. And sharing it with new ears. Can continue on. As a music lover. I’m always searching and digging through the buried treasures. Of a world gone bye. There’s always hope for the future. I just haven’t caught up with it yet.✌️

Great Badfinger overview. I remembered their songs from grade school and rediscovered this band a couple years ago. Amazing talent and seemingly nice guys that got monumentally hosed by thieving management. Your video had some very cool early photos that I had not previously seen. Thanks for posting!

Well done. The story of Badfinger is truly a tragic one. Adding to everything you mentioned was a mess of a concert tour they did in the US around 1973. I was in college and they came to our campus as part of the tour. I was really looking forward to it, as No Matter What, Baby Blur and especially Day After Day were among my favorite songs of that time period. Unfortunately, their concert performance was a disaster. They did not appear interested in playing their hit songs, and instead went into a meandering, incoherent jam session. I have never seen so many people walk out on a concert as I did that night. It's clear now that they would have benefited immensely from proper management. What a sad story.

I saw Badfinger live after Pete Ham was a suicide victim, i also saw surviving member Joey Molland a few years back...Joey put on a nice show and was funny as hell.Joey spent time with us after the show , hes just a really nice down to earth guy.Badfinger got ripped off more than any other band in History and it cost two of them their lives.

I always felt their presence at the Concert for Bangladesh was mishandled. Those of us who bought the Bangladesh discs, saw the movie, felt the band was demeaned, made a footnote. Badfinger should have been given at least one song on what became a huge selling release & widely seen flick .

It was a unique showplace for Badfinger & given the business relationship involved, one that would ultimately destroy the band, Harrison & Apple should have done something to spotlight Badfinger. Go check the discs and movie to see how much time is devoted to Indian music! You think a song or two by Badfinger was not possible?

As much as You and I would have wanted BF to be given a chance to play McCartney’s “Come and Get it”…it really didn’t make sense. The Boys were just happy to have been invited. Pete’s duet with George was a blessing…Badfinger’s bad business decisions hadn’t even begun until Klein was about to advise Apple not to match what was being offered by Warmers

Every musician should learn how music publishing, music business and management works. Badfinger is the poster child of what can go wrong if you don't know how the music business works. Such a sad story and loss of great talent. To this day they are one of my favorite bands.

Loved this band in the day but never bought anything. '96 or so, my first foray into the 'pre set' world of guitar effects,,,,a Zoom 1010 floor rig. Good for its time, prob not now.....in the box for over 5 years after a move. Thing is, just cruising thru presets, i found one that inspired "No Matter What". I hadn't heard the song in years but loved it enough that it stuck. Should have offered it like Flirtin' With Disaster during the band reunion days mid '00. Never knew of the heart breaking story of Badfinger until the web about 10 years ago. speechless.
