Forgotten Game Console: ATARI XEGS Complete Game Collection

The Atari XEGS is the most obscure game console Atari released. Coming out in 1987, it was to be marketed alongside the Atari 2600 jr and Atari 7800. It faded in obscurity quickly, not able to compete with other gaming consoles and computers that were well known and supported. While the XEGS can play many 8 bit computer games, it had 32 games released for it specifically.

It was a rebranded computer with no original games... nothing great about it at all. It was Atari decided "We f*cked up with the 7800, so lets f*ck up just a little bit less with its successor."

Love this episode. My favorite PC and console are the Atari 8 bit. Star raiders was originally going to be called The last star fighter, it had to be changed due to copy right issues with the movie. I had decided to buy the game, the name had changed by the time I managed to buy the game back in the 80s

Congrats on completing the collection!! I remember seeing this in the Sears catalog in 80s and oh my word I wanted it bad. I still LOVE that console design. However as a collector I'm looking at the price of the console and the fact that nearly that entire library was on the 2600 and 7800 makes it really hard to justify getting into it.

When talking nostalgia in collecting I want this system an it is hard to find why It was not my first system but it was the first one I bought from my first job in high school I made a mistake not telling my parents how important it was when I left for the military so when I came home it was gone I had the tape deck an the printer for it I had fun with the games an writing my own I will have it again I might sound crazy but it holds some of my best memories so I am happy just seeing Thank you John

I've recently decided to trade my 600XL over to an XEGS, and the most important part to me is that it's (almost) fully compatible with all Atari 8-bit carts, so with that compatibility, the game library for it is pretty big. I feel it's definitely overlooked as a collectable "console" and it's not much different than the 5200, which was also pretty much an Atari 8-bit computer repackaged.

Friend of mine had one of these. I think it might actually be in my Mom's basement! Interesting that Nintendo licensed games to a competing system when the NES was really hitting its stride.
@xnonsuchx
@xnonsuchx 6 лет назад
Atari actually did the MARIO BROS. and DONKEY KONG Nintendo games and other arcade companies' game ports for other 8-bit consoles/computers (C-64, ColecoVision, Intellivision, Apple II, DOS, TI-99, BBC Micro, ZX Spectrum) through it's AtariSoft division. The Nintendo games were only for computers and not consoles, so as not to have console competition for the NES...not sure if Nintendo got upset about the XEGS as a console, though.
@emmettturner9452
@emmettturner9452 6 лет назад
xnonsuchx That would be an interesting theory... if they weren’t also being sold by Atari for the 2600 and 7800 at the same time (...and 5200 before then). It’s merely a relic of their licensing arrangement from before the NES. Atari would frequently republish games, unchanged, many years later, even if they didn’t develop the older version. 2600 Donkey Kong, for example, was originally Coleco but later copies were published by Atari. I have a pre-XEGS copy of Choplifter for 400/800/XL/XE that wasn’t published or licensed by Atari, unlike the XEGS copy shown in this video. Same game; same platform; same format (cartridge); different packaging/cartridge. They would continue this for years. Remember: Atari = Tengen, so when they’d re-release unlicensed versions of RBI Baseball, Pac-Man, Gauntlet, etc they were kinda doing the same thing. They were milking the licenses they did have for as long as possible across competing platforms. Heck, Atari themselves formed AtariSoft to publish PAC-Man and other games they had exclusive rights to on competing platforms. It was the status quo back then.
@emmettturner9452
@emmettturner9452 6 лет назад
xnonsuchx Oh yeah: Atari did not do the port for ColecoVision Donkey Kong. Coleco did. Coleco also did it for Atari 2600. When Atari re-published it later on, they re-published Coleco’s version... unchanged.
@emmettturner9452
@emmettturner9452 6 лет назад
Harry Warburg I’ve heard this too, but there are also homebrews for ColecoVision that are a million times better than Coleco’s. I think both were lazy ports. Still their Atari version may have been intentionally more lazy, but Atari could have made a better version when they republished it. Instead, they chose to republish the version that was supposedly made to make them look bad. Me thinks they only cared about the name “”Donkey Kong.”
@noop9k

I think Atari got their license in early 80s and Nintendo could not revoke it. BTW NES was originally planned to be released under Atari brand in the US.

I love the XEGS. Such a great, bizarre system. 😄My understanding is the idea behind the XEGS was to sneak the XL/XE hardware and games into retailers that wouldn’t have otherwise carried computers by disguising it as a game console. Interestingly, it may have been the first console of Atari Corp.’s own (re)design-their 2600jr and 7800 systems were inherited from the old Warner/Atari Inc., and the Lynx was designed by Epyx. Mario Bros. is especially interesting because rather than being a repackaging of the 5200 or 400/800 version like most other XEGS titles, it is a completely unique version.
@johnhancockretro
@johnhancockretro 6 лет назад
Yes the Mario is unique to the XEGS and am thankful for that. Too bad they did not do this with other versions of games.

I have both the Atari 400 and the Atari 800XL computer systems which I still use my game cartridges with them. I wanted to get the Atari XE Game System (aka the Atari XEGS) however none of the local electronics stores carried it. I did order game cartridges for my Atari 800XL and I soon realized that most of the games for the XE/XEGS were also compatible with my XL, so I didn't feel so bad after all.

I like your collection, I have the xe 65. I got it two years ago, I got about 4 carts for it. Pole position was one of them. I have lots of tape games as I get a lot of new old stock games cheaper than the carts. I'm going to get one of those sd card readers for the xe or atari 8 bit computers. You get them on ebay for £65, I saw it on RU-vid. I would rather have the games, but I have neither the money nor the space for them. The one game I wanted was H. E. R. O, but I wasn't paying £145 plus £12 postage for a cart! I paid £5 for it on tape on the zx spectrum! I have a ZX Spectrum, C64, Amstrad 646. Game's for the lot! Shelfs, chests, drawers bin bags up in the loft. What am I always told? You can only play one game at a time!

From a UK standpoint, the timeline went: Atari annouce 5200 to replace aging 2600. Atari annouce due to US crash 5200 scrapped. Atari showcase 7800 to replace aging 2600. Atari UK annouce 65 XE GS is more suited to UK, 7800 put on hold. 7800 limps out last and Atari have the 2600 Jr, XEGS and 7800 all competing for same, limited 8 bit UK console market. Utter madness. :-))

It never would have occurred to me to consider this a "complete set" but I guess it counts. I've always considered the XEGS library to be the same as the rest of the A8 library, including all the older cartridges which run on it, plus floppy and cassette games that run on it if you add the appropriate drives.

The various late-era Ataris and the Sega Master System are such a fantastic story because Nintendo was so dominant (and honestly Nintendo seriously played fast and loose with the law to get that dominance) during that era. It took Nintendo resting on their laurels a year too long and waiting another year and a half during the late NES era before porting the Super Famicom over as the Super Nintendo Entertainment System to break Nintendo's stranglehold on the North American market, as the Mega Drive - largely overlooked in Japan - started dominating the North American (as the Genesis) and European markets.

I like that light gun, not sure why Atari took so long to make one in hindsight, wish they had made more to buy separately as a general Atari peripheral. Forgot it had a keyboard, didn't see another console do that till DC iirc. It definitely was an example of competing against yourself, I mean the 7800 was out so why not make some peripherals and more games for it rather than release a whole other console? Some fine looking boxed games you have there. ;)

I’ve heard of the Atari XE line of computers, but never knew that they made a computer/console hybrid. It sounds like there was an overlap of when the 7800 was out.
@johnhancockretro
@johnhancockretro 6 лет назад
It was and completely overlooked. What made it even more interesting was that they promoted this as a higher price point game console/computer...that offered inferior versions of some games on it compared to the 7800(Food Fight, Desert Falcon, etc). Donkey Kong was better though by a mile.
