Forgotten Games: Ganbare Daiku no Gen-san (Hammerin' Harry) - SNESdrunk

Good ol Charlie Sheen. Played a cat in this game in the 90s, and then played Dex Dogtective in Food Fight a decade later. What a career.

As a kid in the 80's, I would write game companies and tell them how much I liked one of their games and ask if they had any promo merchandise they could send me. Most of the times I never actually played the game I mailed them about, i would just look the game up in Nintendo Power. One of the games was Hammering Harry for the NES which was coming out soon. I wrote the company and got a letter back saying "Thanks for the letter but Hammering Harry never got released in the US". Whoops! I guess the game got scrapped after the magazine article was printed. They were still nice enough to send along some promo stuff anyway.

The arcade game from 1990 is something I randomly came across as a child in a laundry mat my aunt worked at for a short time, but it remained closed to my heart ever sense. I almost instantly became enamored with the game because of its simplistic controls that I could easily understand at such a young age, while also enjoying all the beautifully colored and detailed sprite work. It was nice re-seeing this again, thanks man 👍

There is a popular say in Brazil that says "for those who can only use a hammer, every problem is a nail". Seems to be the case here and I'm glad it does, because this game looks really great and lots of fun. Never heard about it before. Will check it out. Thanks!

Good review! I remember trying this game years ago on a whim. It is very silly and bizarre, but a lot of fun! I enjoy a quirky action platformer and this one is definitely a hidden gem (well, to non-Japanese audiences anyways). Neighbor's dog poops on your lawn? Smash 'em with your hammer! Girlfriend/boyfriend cheats on you? Smash 'em with your hammer. Co-worker rats you out to your boss? Smash 'em with your hammer. IRS audits your tax return? You better believe that's a hammerin'.

You'd be shocked how many times I pull the "Japanese Charlie Sheen in a Cat Costume" card while playing Cards Against Humanity.

There's a translated LP of this game here on YT, if you're curious about the story. There are quite a few of those Daiku no Gen-san games out there. They all play similarly, but they're all pretty fun really. I agree - sometimes that's all you need.

I don't know if you do PSP stuff at all, but you should check out the PSP extension of this series, Hammerin' Hero. They threw away the "Harry" name and went with his Japanese name Gen! Also, it's in 2.5D and is super difficult, the way the original arcade game was.

That shot of the Hammerin' Harry NES box brought back some memories. A friend owned that game (we both loved the arcade original) and lent it to me for ages. Actually I'm not sure I ever returned it.

I used to play the arcade game when I was a kid, it was kind of rare, but I was lucky to find it and really enjoyed it. after that I played console versions and they were all great. it's a superb franchise and character that isn't so well known outside of Japan.

Hahaha I have memories watching my uncle emulate this game. I always found it hilarious seeing enemies fly all over the place when they got hit. The grunt they made was just icing on the cake. Definitely a solid game. IKUZE!

Well this episode was chock full of references for old folks like us! Those sprites are really detailed, though, so I can see why you'd comment on them looking like someone specific. But I was NOT expecting a box art reference to Arch Hall Jr,! HA! Watch out for snakes!
