If I had one of those things on my land, I'd treat it to a lick of paint and live down there. My own personal batcave. Bit of nice furniture, a decent computer setup, 4 poster bed, you got it made. I'm guessing that wifi might be an issue though. And I'm hoping that the fire blanket would be the only asbestos item. How spacious was the main room down there?
@IKS-Exploration

I would rather turn it into a secure bunker to protect from many things including nuclear war. I would also attempt to make a false hatch made of grass or ground to hide the hatch and have an oxygen generator and co2 scrubber so that I would not need an above ground air pipe which would give away the bunker. But that is just me

I visited several of these while they were operational in my time as a GPO (now BT) engineer. The purpose of visiting was to test the land line phone that each had. The phones, as you no doubt know, had a WB, (Wireless Broadcast) system on them that would be used at the time an attack was imminent. A series of bleeps would precede a spoken voice message from what I can remember. Going down one on your own after tramping across a muddy field could be a bit daunting for a 20 year old, especially in the summer when your eyes went from bright sunlight to pitch black as you looked down the shaft, some of which could be quite deep! I only recall one of them being painted white inside though, which made a vast difference, although I only visited about 4 or 5 of them in all over the years. First thing to notice inside was the chill and dank smell that always greeted you, and the atmosphere always seemed to get creepy as you sat there listening to the WB eerily bleeping away as part of the test. I can remember looking around and seeing the wall charts that gave an estimate of the distance from the blast - all very chilling when you realised this was no game back then. And yes, you did tend to hit your head on the bloody counterweight on the way back up.

I have been watching a few royal observer corps videos and i just a few questions. Who is going to hear the sirens and see the flares to notify the local inhabitants of a bomb being deployed. when there seems to no one or hardly anyone around these locations ? did they ever give get three to four weeks worth of ration packs in case of a nuclear attack and what was they? how often do you have to empty the chemcal toilet and would it of last the three to four weeks with three people in the bunker. if a bomb was deployed and you have to lock the hatch and close the air vent. how long do you think the air is going to last inside the bunker. Did they ever give you radation suits and breathing apparatus. what was they doing in the bunker while waiting for the attack. was you still taking readings from the equipment. why wasn't the bunkers lined with lead or fitted with air filter unit to purify the air and keep exposure to radiation to a minium. i think if the bomb ever was deployed and went off in britian they wouldn't of lasted very long in the bunkers. i think they was actually monitoring the radiation from the new built nuclear power station being built around britian from the 1950's onwards. why was there so many built. ( this is my conspiracy and i think it needs investigating. i don't think the treat of a nuclear war was that great to do this on the scale they did. ) but the whole thing makes me think why do this at all. it's totally bonkers and eccentric. i just find it baffelling that they were just waiting there, waiting for something that never happened. unless it happened in a test exersize training situation. I could understand if they were monitoring the weathers for the met office. but they never mention that. Totally amazing and totally baffelling as well.

Ian Watson I found another one near me but had been vandalised long ago and is practically destroyed. :-( but on the history front I know the building used for the local home guard including the old barracks, and a building used to watch over the (then) airfield (spitfire training site) and has bullet marks on a wall used for target practice. and I know of an old wooden pier that apparently was used to load torpedos onto subs.... oh and I have been in a building that was where they made explosives during ww2 (rubber/wooden floors to avoid sparks)

Because they were expected to stay below ground for 3 weeks during a Nuclear exchange. The post only had a 65ah battery which would not have lasted very long if they had big powerful lights underground. Each post had 6w bulb and a 8w strip light. The 6w was to be used at all times with the 8w only to be used for tasks that required more light. The human eye becomes accustomed to low levels of light after a short period so 6w is more than adequate. Hope that helps.

I think you are referring to the concept of stolen valor, which only really applies if you are wearing some sort of indication of rank, or medals. Even then it's really only taken seriously if you try and impersonate a member of the forces to extort money from someone or try and impose authority on people that you don't actually have. Many people wear army surplus clothing all the time for camping trips and such. I have a WW2 RAF greatcoat for whenever I visit the highlands. I'm informed by the RAF that as long as I don't go around telling people that I'm a war hero and give them orders, I'm cool :D
