Lets shine the spotlight on this sadly overlooked Supes rogue - Carl "Moosie" Draper, aka the Master Jailer, aka Deathtrap, aka Kator!
Master Jailer was created by Martin Pasko and Curt Swan. Superman was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Both characters are properties of DC Comics.

Now THIS is a rogue that really should've gone somewhere. He has the motivation, design, abilities and concept that should've made him a household name, or a fairly well known B-lister at the very least. But I will say that I prefer the name Deathtrap, even though Master Jailer is a much more unique name.

I really wish Master Jailer became a main stay, he is a pretty unique Superman rogue wanting to imprison him to prove his superiority over Supes. He has a cool gimmick, a really cool design and interesting and unique motivations. I really want him to come back and be established as one of superman's main villains, he is one of my favourite Superman rogues

I also remember reading the Master Jailer's first appearance and really loving him. That Pasko/Maggins/Bates Bronze Age era of Superman was really good and introduced a lot of underrated villains that don't get enough use today. Superman comics today seem to keep on going back to the same few villains, or introducing new villains that are way too similar to those same few villains (I swear I've seen five characters who are all pretty much just Zod or Mongul).

"I guess you could say the Master Jailer isn't as forgotten as some of the other guys and gals I've covered here..." Considering I'd never even heard of the guy, I'd say he's pretty forgotten. I have to say, just based on what you've shown and said here...I REALLY need to look this one up. I haven't seen the Supergirl version, either, so even there I'm totally unaware of him. But he sounds and looks AMAZING. I'm definitely going to see about finding at least a few of his major appearances, and giving him a read. Thank you for this video on what seems to be a truly underrated rogue! :D

You're welcome! If you're gonna read his stories, I recomend his first appearance (Supes 331 & 332) and maybe Supes 393, as it's the only other story to focus on Draper's obsession with Lana. In the other stories he's kinda just your generic super villain.

By the tine John Byrne took as the main artist on Superman , toys and merchandise still had Swan s art.

I feel like this guy should definitely make a comeback! And a real one! Have a whole arc in Superman where he tests Superman’s powers to finally make a truly escape proof prison cell for Superman. And now that the classic Superman is back you can keep the backstory. Or maybe have him be always ignored as a kid and when he receives some attention, BAM! Superman steals it.

The Master Jailer has an old-fashioned but eye-catching costume... although the white with black stripes at first makes me think he's some kind of sports referee-themed villain until you see the lock-and-keyhole design on his belt buckle. The idea of referees actually leads me to think that a modern MJ should be motivated by imprisoning and punishing criminals -- both with criminal records and those presumed to be lawbreakers -- and those he views as not taking strong enough measure sin that regards, sort of like a Superman rogue-counterpart to Lock-Up from the Batman mythos. The whole "seeking vengeance upon Superboy/man for incidental past wrongs" character motivation is too well-established as belonging to Lex Luthor, and giving a similar motive to another character sounds lazy. Not sure whether to include the vague B&D vibe that the 2002 MJ possessed, both in alterations to his costumes and the various chains and imprisonment paraphernalia he used, however. Perhaps MJ starts off looking as his Bronze Age self but his costume and equipment begins to become all spiky and what-have-you as frustration sets in or his sanity begins to fragment. One thing I'm sure of is that the less said about he Deathtrap era and that horrible '90s-era costume the better... it looks like something Rob Liefeld actually rejected!

Honestly i think The Master Jailer should’ve kept the original design but give him the motive of the post crisis version, I also feel like he should combine suit designs between the Jailer and his deathtrap costumes. he’s also a bit unique because aside from conduit from the 90s, he’s probably the only villain that has a personal connection to superman‘s time at smallville.

I've always been fond of Master Jailer, and completely agree with you on how the Post-Crisis version doesn't come close to beating out the original (though I do like the detail that he was hired by S.T.A.R. Labs - it makes everything feel just a little bit more connected, and I appreciate that), but I get the feeling that the writers look at him as a low-stakes villain - kinda like Prankster or Toyman, only without a legacy of Golden/Silver Age stories holding him up. I disagree with them of course - with enough time, resources and talent anyone can be a threat, but I don't think they see it that way; that's likely why he's ended up stuck on the Suicide Squad, where he'll likely be dead by Issue 50; he's just an expendable name that a few Arrowverse fans who saw his appearance on Superman might recognise to them. ...Christ I sound cynical. On a more positive note, I do actually like the ideas presented on Supergirl...for a similar-yet-different character, rather than the actual Carl Draper. I'd probably do a bit of polishing, add a quick nod to him impersonating Carl as Master Jailer at one point, bring back the Deathtrap identity for the sake of differentiation and let him loose as a Supergirl villain. Honestly, I think there's a perfect middle-ground between the Pre-Crisis version's backstory and the Single Father element of the Post-Crisis version (ie the other thing I like about that version, as it could easily be used to show that he did genuinely try to move on and have a good, honest life, which makes him so much more sympathetic than just keeping him as another obsessed love-sick creep) that would make for a great High-B-List/Low-A-List Superman Villain.
@mr.rogues4145
@mr.rogues4145 5 лет назад
Yeah, it seems like the writers have just decided that certain villains are "lame", or "low-stakes", as you put it - for no REAL reason. The fans might have something to do with it too, I mean they can be pretty cruel - I remember reading many fan letters in the letter pages of old Batman and 'tec issues, saying that Pengers is a crap villain who should just be dropped. Riddler too. Sheesh... Oh, and btw, apparently Jailer is already dead in Rebirth... dang...
@dannybuckle3763
@dannybuckle3763 5 лет назад
Seriously? Already?! This is exactly why I've stopped caring about the Suicide Squad; it was once a book where the villains, for once, got to let their unique personalities shine through, usually without superhero interference, and while a few would die along the way, the survivors would go on to become fan-favourites. Now, it just feels like a place to shill out C/D-Listers to kill off while Harley, Floyd, Boomer and one or two others walk through it all with no interesting character development. Yeah, the vocal minority of fans are a big problem. At the end of the day, most readers don't care that much about which villains show up, how they act, why they act that way and whether or not they die at the end, and while I disagree with that viewpoint, I can still understand it; the villain is just one piece of a story, and the hero should come first in terms of how they're portrayed. It's the people who decry certain villains as "lame" and actively whine when writers try to use them and develop them that annoy me. They have the right to have and express their views on these characters of course, no matter how much I disagree with them, but opposing the idea of actually fleshing them out and making them interesting just really bothers me. For example; Bane in Secret Six. I've warmed up to Bane a lot in the past year or so, but my opening up to the character started with this series. Like the Squad, it dedicated itself to fleshing out old villains, both on and off the team (I still love how Gail used King Shark in it for how unapologetic it is in its goofiness), and I see Bane as one of the bigger successes from the book. Before this point, from what I can tell at least, Bane became a joke; a big, tough guy pumped up with Venom (despite swearing off it...nice continuity there DC!) for the heroes to beat up, and every defeat made him seem less and less intelligent and cunning like his debut story intended him to be. Then Gail comes in and shows us exactly the type of guy someone like the classic Bane actually would be like...even some of the more awkward things, like having a no idea how romance works due to his life in isolation. It's that humanisation that I love...and what some other people hated. If they dislike the characterisation itself that's fine, but some seemed to hate even attempting to add depth and humanity to Bane, which I simply don't understand. Speaking of Gail though, that brings me to an important point; Geoff Johns, Gail Simone, Tom King, Scott Snyder, Grant Morrison, Greg Rucka, Mark Waid; all these people are basically just Promoted Fans of comics, each with their own view as to how each character should act and behave (for example, Johns has Wonder Woman be a generic Violent Amazon Warrior while Gail writes her to be an All-Loving, Caring Idealist who believes in Truth and Redemption; both very different versions of the same person, both written within the same general time period). Consistency is nearly impossible now because of this, and divides the fans even further. I personally like seeing how all these different people view these characters, but am also unafraid to call out characterisation that opposes the whole point of a character (gun-wielding Batman, Angry Warrior Diana, assh*le Superman, etc) while still being respectful to the writing team; sometimes a character simply doesn't click with you (hell, I'll freely admit that I didn't get Ra's Al Ghul at all until just a few months ago, and now that I think I get the character (or at least the less morally bankrupt versions) I like the character so much more) and that's fine. Honestly, at the end of the day all the current staff of fans running both DC and Marvel will be replaced with generation who could just as easily nullify all the bullsh*t they don't like, and the generation afterwards could retcon that nullifying factor out of existence, and so on. Hell, some day the Head of DC could be one of those fans whose burned out of Batman and makes him a Bit-Player in the DCU for a decade - it seems unthinkable now, but I'm sure that my fellow Titans fans thought the same of the team in 2003, with decades of publishing history, a cartoon on the horizon and being having a huge roster of heroes that kept on growing...right before that team was torn apart, killed off in droves across eight years, was retconned out of existence, came back in a sh*t book in the New 52, got hit with more retcons and now seems to just be...there. I've seen long-time Titans fans become more and more cynical as time passes, and I don't blame them at all. Young Justice fans faced the same, and unlike the Titans they don't even have their team back yet. All this happened because Dan DiDio doesn't like Legacy Characters, and wanted to focus on the "classic originals", even though Barry & Hal, two of DiDio's biggest revivals, were Legacy Heroes themselves. This is the price of having fans become writers; they're blinded by their love of certain characters to just move forward and develop their replacements further, and in the process cripple the universe they love so much. From what I've gathered, you're not the biggest fan of superhero legacies like Dan DiDio, but I personally find them to be one of the best parts about the DCU; it makes everything feel more meaningful, more important in the grand scheme of things, to have heroes pass on, retire or even just semi-retire and for it to stick. I'm sick of meaningless deaths and revivals. If you want to write, say, a story about one of the dead JSA members, retcon it into before their death, rather than reviving them for that one idea before killing them off again a few years later. Even deaths that I personally hate (Ted Kord, for example) I would've come to accept because Jaime was a great replacement with a fun personality, a great supporting cast and various interesting superhero connections that allow for plenty of unique stories to be told. Not every replacement's going to be the success that Jaime was, but I think I've made my point clear, and I'm honestly just rambling by this point so I should probably just stop.

Mr. Rogues unless issue 47 came out, he wasn’t dead, Satanis dragged him against his will

He is like Lock-Up from Batman. Speaking of that, why don't you do a video about Lock-Up?

"Somebody should fix that." You clearly know more about the character than almost anyone else, probably including anyone at DC. Maybe you could put together his Wiki page?

A cool character with a surprisingly interesting motive, but I can't help but notice how 95% of villains motivated by unrequited love are dudes. At least as far as comics are concerned. Are there any popular female supervillains that are driven purely by their love for someone else (romantically speaking)?
