Lets take a look at this very obscure old Marvel villain: Wilhelm Von (Van?) Vile, aka the Painter! Painter was created by Stan Lee, Robert Bernstein and Jack Kirby. The character is a property of Marvel Comics.
"The Painter" is like an evil version of Kirby the artist from the early TMNT comic books (Donatello #1). Kirby has a magic pencil that allows him to bring to life anything he draws (he's also a lovely homage to Jack Kirby, which is really nice).
The painter had potential to be an eccentric but dangerous foe for the FF. He could have teamed up with the puppet master, as they are both artists and together, they would create monstrous paintings and clay sculptures to destroy their enemies. Since you are taking requests, think you could do an underrated video on the hobgoblin?
Originally I wasn't very sure about you leaving your Batman channel theme, but as you release more fun and creative videos I have definitely grew to love the new way your going. Im glad that you are expanding into the Marvel universe as well, and bringing light to the most creative but forgotten villains in comics. PS I love that you continue to start out with "Reporting from Arkham asylum..."
Vincent Price would have been great if he was still with us. Jack Nicholson would have been great too if he was younger, but apparently he's retired now.
If I'm honest, where they were going with by abilities, he reminded me of Brushogun (I believe an exclusive enemy of the Titans Animated Series). If we were to revamp him as a mutant, I could definitely see him being this type of character. Bringing his art to life. I could also see them make him a character of the distant future, similar to Abracadabra from DC, The Painter would have a brush that creates living beings of art but what seems like magic to us, is really just far developed science of his time. Along with those, I also had the idea that he could not only bring his art to life but others as well. Just imagine you're trapped in a museum and The Painter brings The Thinker and The Mona Lisa to life just to fight you, pretty ridiculous but would make him a fun and wacky villain. By the way Rogue, I've watched your review. 10/10 and I definitely agree with your points especially with William Shatner's portrayal of Two-Face. I honestly would've loved to see him play the character in Live-action but I assume he was busy with Star-Trek at the time.
What an awesome power. But very weird. I never read about him. Lol. "Who's villian is he?" I'd say Human Torch. Hopefully you'll do a Fantastic Four video. Loved the video!
For Fantastic Four videos. The Trapster and Dragon Man are good. Dragon Man is more Forgotten. And Trapster (Paste Pot Pete) is underrated. Paste Pot Pete is another Human Torch/ Spiderman Rouge. He's been part of the Frightful Four to challenge the Fantastic Four. And Dragon Man is a robot that spits fire and flies.
I agree - he ought to be a Torch rogue, or FF. Holy shit - I looked up Dragon Man, and apparently I had an action figure of him in the 90s.. I had no idea what character it was, I thought it was just some random monster.
This is during the period of time in Strange Tales when the Human Torch had a rogues gallery of his own separate from the Fantastic Four. A lot of the other villains like Eel and Porcupine ended up bouncing from title to title after Torch stopped appearing in solo adventures. They often teamed up with each other, but the Painter was never included.
You're uploading very often! I love it. Take breaks though I don't want you to get burnt out on these vids, I want to keep watching you evolve. You've gotten really great, I think eventually you will pull in views like the big comic channels on your niche vids just for the quality alone.
First of all: you are SPOILING us with all these uploads recently, sir, or so it feels. XD Second: I have read the Painter's original Fantastic Four appearance, but not his Spider-Man one. I really don't have anything to say that you haven't said, however. I like the concept of the character, as well as his over-the-top personality, and even his design is kind of fun, if on the corny side (he kind of looks like the Imposter Hatter, don't you think, with the wild-eyed, manic expressions and bushy moustache?), but there's just not much to go on, and what is there is rather confusing. So, fair assessment. (thumbs-up)
Yeah you're right - he DOES kinda look like the Imposter.. I didn't even think of that. I was mostly just thinking "Joker" due to the purple hat and scarf.. which is really a stretch. Anyway, yeah, I neglected to mention his design in the video; I like it, it's cool, albeit fairly simple and basic. His manic expressions in the Spidey comic are just priceless! I recomend reading it, if nothing else but for the weirdness.
I'd recommend covering Zn'rx or Snarks as The Power Pack calls them. Apparently they are some weirdass lizard race that are kind of like Klingons in Star Trek. It's definitley an odd Marvel villain alien race you should check out
As an art student, this is the most relatable supervillain ever, especially when he goes crazy in his second appearance. :P Just curious, do you do supervillains who originated in media other than comics? There's a villain named Parafino who appeared in two episodes of the 60's Spider-Man cartoon. He's an evil wax sculptor whose sculptures come to life.
I think he should be portrayed as an edgy tortured artist type. Get him out of that generic crook get-up. Have him get his powers through some magic ritual, as opposed to just stumbling upon them.
Ahh Wilhelm Van Vile. If it wasn’t for the Ruby Tuesday video you made I wouldn’t have thought to mention him because that web of spider-man story arc was actually a 4 parter called Art Attack with the the last 3 issues being unrelated to the first which was totally weird. There is a DC villian called the weeper who is pretty corny and yes he weeps. Thank you for the mention. Enjoy your stuff.
Yeah, that "four parter" dont make any sense to me either. I didn't even bother to read the other three parts when doing the Ruby video, as I noticed she didn't appear in them. Thanks!
Painter reminds me of a villain from _Naruto_ of whatever she painted happened. She was so OP that magic seals had to be put on her and put under house arrest and still she caused trouble. I can see this guy doing a lot of mayhem under the right writers.
If Painter was a great supervillain then how come Marvel Comics decided to put this character into obscurity? The best bet for reviving Painter could have been in the movie Avengers End Game where Late Stan Lee the former Marvel Comics CEO could have used this character to paint the bloating death of the destructive supervillain Thanos- thereby avoiding the anti climax of death of Tony Stark aka Iron Man.
Love the moustache, great video as usual as well. And hey I was wondering if you had heard of the Ant-man/the Wasp villian The Living Eraser? He's awesome😂
To me, the Painter's second story sounds like a planned two-parter that was never finished. In order to truly flesh out his character, you'd probably need to write part two, which would explain why he wound up seeming so bizarre - unfinished stories often have that effect. I do think there's some potential there, though. If nothing else, he's creepy and weird enough that he SHOULD be used again, at least once. Let's see what could be done. To address the power issue would be fairly simple - just take away the 'paints at super-speed' aspect. Give him the power to bring his paintings to life, but they're normal paintings that he has to paint at a normal speed, and he's limited by how many of them he can actually have close at hand at any given time. (He might be able to get around this by painting little miniature ones that he carries on him like Gambit's playing cards, which would make for an interesting visual.) Second, Von Vile has clearly had something happen to him in between stories - he doesn't really seem to be human anymore. There are the bugs, of course, and then there's the fact that what's left of him after the explosion is described as being more like canvas than human flesh. So how about this: those magic paints from the first story were very powerful and meant to be used sparingly, or else the user risked a magical backlash. Because he was just gloppin' the stuff all over the place, Von Vile paid the price - over time, the backlash pulled a 'Dorian Gray' on him, extracting his soul in the form of a painting, and turning the Painter himself into a sort of simulacrum of his former self, more paint and canvas than actual human. So why the cockroaches? Because THEY WERE EATING THE PAINTING. Von Vile had stored his soul-painting in a bug-infested storage space somewhere that for whatever reason he couldn't easily get back to again, and the bugs were devouring his soul. That's why his second outing was so crazy: he was slowly going insane as the cockroaches feasted on his very essence, and he was determined to go out with a bang - as, ultimately, he did. Of course, I'm completely making all of that up, but I do think it's a notion with potential. If nothing else, the whole soul-painting business would provide an easy way to bring him back: the bugs didn't QUITE finish devouring it, and someone found it and decided to restore it. Once the painting's back in good shape, the Painter is, too.
Well the obvious answer is the cockroaches aren't cockroaches. The Pinter was making use of alien paints that the Human Torch destroyed. So a small group of the aliens which resemble Earth bugs traveled to Earth to find out who is messing with their stuff. They find the Painter and when he tells them what the Torch did they team up.
The Painter reminds me of Wario, now I read all of his lines in Wario's voice and I can't take him seriously heh heh heh. But I will say I do like him, I love characters with powers and themes based around the arts, especially drawing and painting. And even when imagining him talking like Wario, he is pretty creepy looking with his drab clothing and cockroaches crawling around him, not someone you'd want to meet in a dark alley, especially if he has omnipotent powers like bringing everything he paints to life!
you know believe it or not that wasn't the last we saw of the painter after his return in web of spider-man he did somewhat kind of came back in 2012 avenging spider-man issue 13 like I'm not kidding its own his Wikipedia page and yeas the painter has his very own Wikipedia page but anyway that was the last we ever saw of him for now....
hey can you talk about another forgotten flash villain clive yorkin a sliver age flash villain who is very forgettable and he also appeared in the season 3 flash TV show episode Untouchable
I don't know if you take requests, but could you make a video about the Brotherhood of Dada?? Actually, a lot of Doom Patrols villains could appear here, but those are my personal favorite
The Painter's 90's design reminds me of an early Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles figures. He's covered in roaches and looks super ugly and has bulging eyes and big teeth. Sorta like a Pizza Face or a Rat King like figure.
Hey Mr. Rouges, I was looking up information on the up coming game Lego DC Super Villains and saw a rather interesting villain that I never heard of on the wiki page. This guy's name is Psycho Pirate I never heard of this guy and thought that he might be worth mentioning to you. If you have a free moment, could you do a video on this obscure character?
He really isn't THAT obscure - he played a major role in 'Crisis on infinite earths', and also in the 2000s revival of Power Girl. He could use an 'underrated' video though, as the guy could certainly be a lot bigger and more popular. Thanks!
Glad to give you that video Idea. Oh by the way when Lego dc super villains comes out be sure to play it since it puts a focus on villains and is sure to include some forgotten characters. I mean in Lego Marvel super hero 2 they included forgotten characters like captain corbet and forbushman and the presence.
Can you do a Dr. Stange villain someday? There are a ton of weird one-off villains he's faced over the years, but some of the more memorable reoccurring ones include Shuma-Gorath, Silver Dagger, The Purple Dimension/Aggamon, The Dweller in the Dark, D'Spayre, Xandu, Zom, and Tiboro, to name a few. There's also some villains that have no standout qualities but have done something so strange that they are memorable, like Stygyro. Stygyro disguised himself as Ben Franklin when Dr. Strange and his girlfriend Clea visited the 1770's. While disguised as Ben Franklin, Stygyro seduced Clea and they (presumably) had sex. Later he showed up again as a living star and Dr. Stange destroyed him by turning Stygyro into a black hole. It was REALLY weird. Boring villain otherwise, but that Ben Franklin part is just ludicrous.
Man, both Marvel and DC have really scraped the bottom of the barrel over the years. Then again, I'm still hoping someone snaps and tries to write an ASMR-themed villain in something.
