Well, gotta give the guy credit... most of these forklift videos show somebody knocking down row after row of racks. THIS guy tried to take down the whole building.
You don’t need to be told not to do it again. I learned the hard way. It’s easily done when you work long hours and under duress. I’ve seen people who have many years experience make mistakes. Not good, but unfortunately these thing happen. 👍. Thankfully I’m out of that game.
When you are driving forward on a forklift, you have to be especially aware that you have blind spots created by the mast on your machine. He drove into a pillar that he knew was there and had probably passed without incident thousands of times, proving that out of sight can truly be out of mind. That support pillar is just narrow enough to be completely hidden on your right hand blind spot from up to 20 feet away. This kind of accident can be prevented by getting in the habit of moving your upper body right and left as you drive. This will reveal anything your blind spots may be hiding. You are especially vulnerable to an accident like this after stopping and changing your focus from driving to a conversation or paperwork. It is easier than you would think to do this after resuming driving. Move your body and your head before starting again.
Years ago when I was first learning I was inside of the lumber yard and had a manager telling me what I needed to lift. He kept guiding me forward forward. I knew I was already under the load but he said a little more so I did. I pulled back on the lever and it doesn't come up. pull back a little harder and it's still not coming up. Pull back one more time and that's when we realized that he had guided me so far forward that the end of the fork was stuck underneath of the edge of the crossbar. The tab broke the forklift bucked in the air about 6 in and I thought the entire rack was coming down. Luckily it didn't. He looks at it looks at me, says well damn, and just walks away. Last time I ever let that man show me how to do anything.
On the cherry pickers I used to drive, if the front end of the forklift had even the slightest impact with something the horn would sound and stay on. A supervisor had to come and shut the horn off with a key. They got so tired of responding to lift horns that they took the impact sensors out of all the lifts.
This usually happens when the beam lines up perfectly with one of the masts and you cannot see the beam in your line of sight. This is why you should also not walk in front of a forklift assuming the driver will stop, the person driving may not even see you.
maybe : from the bright daylight to the darker hall blind spot because forklift mast beam and floor similar colour beam not secured with yellow black collision protection (that wohl also be much wider than the beam itself
It’s crazy because I kinda did the same thing at my job months ago by hitting a pole but I admit I wasn’t paying attention because I was trying to miss a fellow co worker who was standing on one side of me but instead of hitting him the pole took the hit 😂 better the pole than him I guess 🤷🏾♂️
