I find it funny that so many of the comments are about accents. I personally found the person who threw a hamster and cut her neighbours fish in 2 more shocking than someone using different accents...

+Caitlin H So very true! But I think due to what it says about ms Goldfinch, maybe we all prefer to focus on Gillian? Some like to do so to obsess over her accent, others amongst us by focusing on what an incredibly gorgeous woman she is.

Now that last 'apology' was absolutely fricking awesome! It started out funny enough with the "His name's Ardoff" and then got progressively funnier with his apology standing next to Gordon Brown,who looked suitably 'dour'.Great bit of editing.Oh and Gillian Anderson is one woman I'd go straight for,lol.

You realise she adopted her american accent because she was mocked and made fun of in mid-western america early on, but when she comes back to the UK she doesn't have to use it anymore so she slips back into her childhood accent. Being bidialectal isn't uncommon. When she does it the audience can understand and relate to her better, it's actually very clever. And her english accent is a lot more realistic than most american actors can do, no offense but they often sound very forced.

Lydia Stewart Thank all of you guys for commenting/explaining! I just watched "The Fall" which was excellent btw. I was so confused and trying to find out if Gillian was British or...? I did not know any of this. I watched X-Files with my mom WAY back and the movie etc but never thought about it til I saw her on the show from Belfast where she was borrowed from England. This is REALLY cool! She's a very lucky lady. And a fine actress. Thanks for uploading this as well.😍✌🎁

She was raised from 1 to 12 in England, But what you also forgot to mention is that when her family moved back to Chicago the family still kept their apartment in London. And they went back every Spring/Summer and stayed there for 5/6 months at a time :-)

I hate it when Americans and their fans diss people for speaking with an English accent. As if the US is the only nation that speaks proper English. Btw, I'm Filipino & I grew up in ex-British colonies and I speak with a standard English accent. I was bullied in the Philippines for not speaking with a so-called neutral American accent... As if the Philippines is still an American colony.

1) She left London when she was 11. I think by that time you've WELL established your accent. 2) I think it also depends on the individual, there are people with heavy accents that NEVER lose it, no matter how long they've lived in a different country. 3) She's able to switch off and on her accent. *Shrugs* I don't see anything wrong with that. Who's to say she didn't turn on her American accent on screen, but most spoke with her "native" English accent? (She was actually born in the states)

Thats what communication accomodation is. A deliberate change in accent or style of speaking so that the person you are talking to can clearly understand you. It's just a way of being polite.

For those of you who aren't aware, Gillian is American. She grew up in England for about two years but adopted an American accent after moving back to the states because of kids picking on her. She switches between the two depending on where she is. To be honest, I'm not sure which one comes more naturally to her.

Actually people do change accents its called Communication accommodation. Look it up. Also she was brought up in north London (untill aged 11) with middle class parents so her English accent is perfectly correct.

Gillian lived in uk from aged 2 - 11 (imdb). In american interviews gillian speaks in an american accent but speaks in british accent over here.

+Autotrope While her parents are American, and she was born in America, Anderson grew up as a child in England. Her American accent is something she created when she moved to the US because kids were bullying her over her English accent. As someone who is neither American nor British I find her English accent to be more sincere and her American accent to be more sultry. Even just the way she laughs has that character.

@Maxshard - Gillian was born in USA and only spent a small part of her life in UK, so that makes her american. However whilst growing up in UK she took on our accent. When she is in the USA she slips back to her american accent and vice versa. Personally I couldn't care less what accent she uses - she's a brilliant actress and the UK has allowed her to really shine. I mean from Scully to Lady Deadlock was one hell of a leap - and she did it!

@ialwaysbesingin Gillian's accent is legitimate. She spent a good portion of her childhood in London. it is in fact her natural accent. But when her family moved back to the States, she was often teased for her Brit accent and so, she did her best to adopt a more American accent. So I suppose it would be fair to say that BOTH of her accents are legitimate.

@kelleyirish she moved to london when she was two and lived there until she was 12. she actually took on an american accent when she came back, due to other kids harrassing her. so, both accents are right.

@florencelovme I think the fact that she's able to do the accent, and doing it in this reading, made it slightly more comedic. Lord knows she's proven she can be hilarious when she wants to be, and it fits that she's doing the accent, given she's an American with a British sense of humor.

As a teen, my friends and I were having band practice in the basement. My father then appeared at the top of the stairs in his white wife-beater and boxers telling us to keep the noise down. We certainly got quiet! This was not an uncommon occurrence.

Nope, you only need a license to watch a live broadcast. You can look this up on the TV license website. If you watch iplayer after the show has been aired then that is fine. The same with mobiles or any other device.

Cont'd from below: So part of her accent shift is 1.Teased in school and forced herself to learn American accent. 2.Went to drama school for 4 years and lost native accent. 3.We only really ever saw her in 2 guest spots before she landed X-files, so our frame of reference for her accent has been formed as soley American. On some eps of the X-files, certain words, it kind of comes out, but being a pro and theater trained she would probably catch herself and correct it, or thedirector would

in your example the hotel would have a business license for all it`s clients . The license does indeed include internet streaming . I dont have a tv , but i still have to pay because i have internet access

@carpet691 If you're willing to trust Wikipedia, apparently Anderson's English accent she naturally picked up growing up here, was mocked when she had to relocate to the American Midwest. So she now makes a point of adjusting her voice to her location. The problem isn't her. The problem is everyone else. If that's what she has to do to feel comfortable now, then good on her. I can see the irritation when it's someone as transparent as Madonna, but I think Anderson blends in quite well.

Well, this was 10 years ago. This vid reminded me that back in the day Gillian Anderson sounded American in American talk shows and posh English like here on British chat shows. Which accent was she putting on? I have no idea. Brilliant actress though. In the early 2000’s she was great in Bleak House on PBS as Lady Dedlock I believe. I don’t know when it aired in Britain first.

not to get all nerd technical on you but...... GA did indeed live in england between the ages of 2 and 11. her father was a "indie" movie director so they taveled a ton. she was born in chicago, then btwn 1-2 lived in coasta rica (er somthing) THEN to england ages 2-11, THEN to u.s.a. so yeah.....

But she grew up in the U.K., and moved back there as soon as she was done with the X-Files. Obviously I don't know her, so I can't say for sure, but I know I am from the Midwest U.S., and I have a very distinct accent. When I moved away my accent started to drop, and then when I came back "home" and was around others with the accent, it came back. To claim that she is "faking it" is kind of a big jump. I found this clip on RU-vid, was looking for a recent Gillian Anderson interview.

legally you do need a license to watch iplayer etc , even with a mobile phone you can get a fine for not having a license . Now whether you are caught or decide to disregard the law is up to the person involved , As is any consequence that he or she may face .
